Chapter 2

The heavy front door swung inward before my boot touched the top step.

I expected a guard in tactical gear or an indifferent butler. Instead, Prince Archer Greystone stood framed in the warm amber light of the foyer. He was tall, his broad shoulders cutting against the glare, wearing a dark wool sweater pushed up to his forearms. His dark eyes locked onto mine. He didn't look startled. He looked at me the way a man looks at an antique clock chiming right on the hour.

A rich, heavy scent rolled over the threshold—crushed cedar and cold night air. It hit the raw, hollow ache at the base of my neck and somehow dulled the sting.

"You're freezing, Blair," he said. His voice was deep, quiet, and completely steady. "Come inside."

"I didn't come here to get warm," I said.

I walked past him into the manor. I didn't drop my chin, and I didn't wipe the ash from my coat. I didn't come as a broken refugee begging for asylum. I walked straight down the wood-paneled hallway toward the double doors of his study, knowing the layout from pack blueprints I had studied years ago.

Archer followed, his footsteps soundless on the parquet floor.

Inside the study, a low fire crackled in the hearth. I stopped in front of his massive mahogany desk and unzipped my coat. I pulled out my worn logistics journal and dropped it onto the blotter. The leather smacked against the wood with a sharp, heavy crack.

"Carter rejected me an hour ago," I said, keeping my voice level. "He thinks I'm walking toward the highway with empty pockets. But I ran Ironveil’s supply lines for five years. That book holds every illegal movement Carter made."

Archer didn't speak. He walked behind his desk, but he didn't sit down. He just leaned his knuckles on the dark wood and watched my face.

"November twelfth," I recited, staring straight into his eyes. "Four crates of refined wolfsbane root routed through the Blackwood border. February third, eight crates to the Frostpeak northern depot. Carter took payment in untraced bearer bonds and diverted fifty thousand dollars into an off-book account. Two packs lost their border scouts to poison that month. Lily helped him forge the transport seals."

I paused, waiting for shock, disbelief, or the usual patronizing dismissal Carter gave me whenever I spoke logistics.

Archer just reached for a heavy leather portfolio beside his desk lamp. He flipped it open, spun it around, and slid it toward me.

I looked down. My breath caught in my throat.

Spread across the creamy parchment were dates, coordinates, and batch numbers. They matched my journal entry for entry, right down to the delivery truck license plates. At the top of each page was the seal of the Lycan Royal Intelligence Office.

I looked up, stunned. "You already had this."

"I did," Archer said softly.

"You've been tracking him for months?"

"Years." He closed the folder, his dark gaze never leaving mine. "I know, Blair. I’ve known for a very long time."

Those two words hung between us, thick with an unspoken history that made my pulse jump. He hadn't just been watching a criminal Alpha. He had been watching *me*.

"Carter thinks he left you with nothing," Archer said, rounding the desk. He stopped two feet away, respecting my space, but his presence was overwhelming. "He expects you to vanish into the woods like an abandoned dog. Tomorrow morning, I file formal charges of high treason and biological contraband before the Lycan Council. But I won't bring you in as a rescued stray, Blair. I won't let them treat you like a victim."

"Then what do you want?" I asked, my defenses flaring instantly.

"I want you to stand beside me," he said, his voice dropping low and resonant. "Not as a witness. As my chosen mate."

The air left my lungs. My severed mark pulsed with a dull, phantom throb. "You're insane. Carter just tore our bond apart. I'm wolfless, Archer. The Council won't respect a paper Luna, and I'm not trading one Alpha's cage for another."

"It isn't a cage," Archer said evenly. "It's a platform. You want Carter ruined. I want him stripped of his title and broken before the law. We do it together."

I stared at him, my mind racing through the tactical angles. Emotion was dangerous; logic was clean.

"An alliance, then," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "On two conditions."

A faint, intriguing smirk touched the corner of his mouth. "Name them."

"First, any warrior who walks out of Ironveil to follow me remains under my sole command. You don't absorb them into your royal guard. They answer to me."

"Agreed," Archer said without a second's pause.

I blinked, thrown off by how quickly he yielded, but pushed forward. "Second, my name appears on the Council filing as a co-complainant. Equal rank, equal signature. I am not your evidence, Archer. I am the prosecutor."

"Done," he said.

He didn't negotiate. He didn't try to soften the terms or patronize me with an Alpha's compromise. His immediate surrender rattled me far more than an argument would have. He stepped closer, offering his hand. When my fingers touched his warm palm, a sudden spark shot up my wrist—sharp, electric, and utterly foreign.

I pulled my hand back fast. Archer only smiled, a quiet, knowing look in his eyes.

At seven the next morning, my encrypted phone buzzed on the guest room nightstand.

I tapped the screen, connecting the private tactical frequency I had built for Ironveil’s border patrol. Marcus's voice crackled through the speaker, low and tight with disgust.

"Luna," he murmured. "I kept the channel open. You need to hear this."

Static hissed, followed by the crunch of gravel and the crisp morning wind blowing through Ironveil's main training yard.

"Attention!" Lily’s voice rang out over the yard. It was shrill, lacking the deep, bone-settling resonance of a true pack leader. "As the incoming Luna of Ironveil, I require all senior warriors to renew their fealty oaths. Step forward and bow your heads."

Silence answered her.

Through the line, I heard the faint rustle of fifty seasoned warriors shifting their weight, but no boots hit the dirt. No knees dropped.

"What are you waiting for?" Lily snapped, her frustration bleeding through. "Marcus! Step forward and pledge!"

"With all respect, Miss Hartwell," Marcus’s voice cut across the open air, cold and dry. "The Luna aura hasn't left the compound. Blair’s scent is still on the boundary stones, on the barracks, and on our armor. Our wolves don't answer to a title. They answer to the mate who bled with us."

"She was wolfless!" Lily shrieked, her composed facade cracking instantly. "Carter cast her out! She’s a rogue!"

"Enough!"

Carter’s roar tore through the feed, followed by the terrifying, suffocating rumble of an Alpha command. Even through the tiny speaker, the raw psychic force of it made the hair on my arms stand up. Over the link, I heard the sickening thud of warriors' knees being violently forced into the gravel by the sheer biological weight of Carter's voice.

"You will kneel to your Luna," Carter snarled, breathing heavily. "Or I will execute every single one of you for treason before noon."

The compliance was dead, sullen, and mechanical. Through the receiver, I caught Marcus’s rough whisper right into his lapel mic.

"He had to force us with the tone, Blair," Marcus whispered, breathless from the pressure. "Lily couldn't move a single wolf on her own. Ironveil is cracking down the middle. Say the word, and half the garrison walks out."

"Hold your ground for forty-eight hours, Marcus," I said calmly, looking out Archer's window at the Lycan estate below. "Let Carter think he’s won."

I hung up the phone. Across the courtyard, Archer was already waiting by a sleek black town car, his royal guards standing at attention.

The stage was set. Carter was holding onto a crumbling kingdom by brute force, completely blind to the fact that the floor beneath him was about to give way.
