My Alpha Rejected Me for His Chosen Luna

At 10:14 on a Tuesday night, the bond shattered—timed to the ceremonial clock above the altar. She chose a white dress with lace framing the mate mark, believing she finally belonged. Chapter 4

Gareth found me in the storage wing on Monday morning.

I was counting inventory—another rotation assignment—when he appeared in the doorway carrying a clipboard. His face was carefully neutral, but his scent was sharp with fear.

"Eastern border," he said quietly. "Two probes last week. Rogues testing the shields."

I set down my pen.

"They turned back," Gareth continued. "But only because they were testing. Not committing. The patrol captain filed a report. Kaden hasn't responded."

I looked at him. "How long until the shields fail completely?"

"Two weeks. Maybe three." His jaw tightened. "Without restocking, we're exposed. And I don't—" He stopped. Started again. "I don't know who else to tell."

I understood what he meant. He'd watched Fiona take credit for my work. He'd seen the wolfsbane stores diverted to the outpost. He'd counted the patrols and done the math.

And he'd realized the person keeping Ironvale safe was never the person standing on the platform.

"Thank you," I said.

Gareth handed me a folded paper—the patrol captain's report—and left without another word.

I added it to the satchel under my cot. The evidence was stacking up. Border failures. Diverted stores. Transfer logs bearing Kaden's signature.

Every piece of proof that Ironvale's collapse was not an accident.

It was a choice.

Paisley's condition worsened by Wednesday.

I heard it through the labor-wing gossip first. She'd been confined to the healer's wing. No visitors except immediate family. Her energy was declining fast.

The pack started talking.

Some blamed me. I heard the whispers during meal rotations. *She's withholding care out of spite. She's punishing Paisley for Kaden's decision. She's selfish.*

Others, quieter, said different things. *The Luna hasn't visited once. Kaden went for fifteen minutes and left. If Paisley's so important, why isn't anyone fighting for her?*

I kept my head down and said nothing.

But my wolf heard every word. And she was keeping count.

Fiona gave a statement Thursday afternoon. I wasn't there, but I heard about it from three different people by evening.

Someone had asked her about Paisley's treatment during a logistics meeting. Fiona had smiled warmly and said, "We're exploring all available options. The pack's medical resources are being carefully managed to ensure the best outcomes for everyone."

Then she'd pivoted smoothly to her outpost expansion timeline.

No mention of the blood-healing bond. No mention of me. No mention of the fact that Paisley's decline had started the moment I stopped draining myself to keep her alive.

Just polished words and a confident smile.

I pressed my thumb against the scar on my neck. It was still cold. Still numb.

But beneath it, something was heating up.

The message came Friday morning.

An omega I barely knew—a quiet woman named Iris who moved freely between wings—appeared at my door holding a folded piece of paper.

"From Paisley," she said softly.

I took it. Iris left without waiting for a response.

I unfolded the paper. Paisley's handwriting was small and precise, the letters slightly uneven from exhaustion.

*I know what he did with your records. I am not going to pretend anymore.*

I read it twice.

Then I sat down on my cot and pressed the paper against my chest.

Paisley had always seen me. Even when no one else did. Even when it cost her nothing to look away.

She wasn't looking away anymore.

My wolf stirred. Not a growl. Not a warning.

Something warm. Something grateful.

I folded the note carefully and put it in the satchel with the rest of the evidence.

One more witness. One more piece of the truth.

The night it happened, I wasn't expecting it.

I'd gone to bed early, exhausted from another day of labor rotations and whispered accusations. The room was dark. The pack was quiet.

Then the pain hit.

It started at the scar on my neck—a sudden, vicious cold that spread down my spine like ice water. I gasped and sat up, pressing my hand against the mark.

It pulsed. Once. Twice.

Kaden's aura, faint and fading, bleeding through the phantom remnant of the severed bond. The last biological echo of something that had never been honored.

It hurt. God, it hurt.

I doubled over, clutching my ribs, trying to breathe through it.

And then my wolf erupted.

Not gently. Not carefully.

She came through like a freight train, silver heat cracking through my chest from the inside, my vision going white at the edges. I felt my bones ache with the pressure of something enormous pressing against the walls of my form, something that had been caged for twenty-two years and was done being quiet.

I couldn't scream. I couldn't breathe.

The heat built and built and built until I thought my ribs would crack open—

And then it stopped.

I was sitting upright on my cot, breathing hard, my hands shaking. Sweat dripped down my neck. My heart pounded so hard I could feel it in my throat.

I looked up.

The wall in front of me had a crack in the plaster. A long, jagged line running from the floor to the ceiling.

It hadn't been there before.

I stood on unsteady legs and walked over. I pressed my palm against the crack.

The plaster was warm.

I pulled my hand back and stared at it. My palm was unmarked. But I could still feel the heat radiating from my skin.

My wolf was awake now. Fully awake.

And she was not small.

I sat back down on the cot, pressing my hands together, feeling the faint scars on my palms. The room was silent except for my breathing.

The crack in the wall stared back at me like a promise.

I didn't know what came next.

But I knew this: whatever had been sleeping inside me for twenty-two years was waking up.

And it was done being buried.
