Chapter 1

The bond seized in my chest the second Cole crossed the threshold, his fingers tangled with a stranger's, border dust still clinging to his boots. Something in the mark on my neck twisted wrong, like a key turning backward in a lock that had always opened for him. I smelled her before I saw her face—wildflowers gone sour with fear, and underneath it, something metallic I couldn't name yet.

Flora Watson was small, round-bellied, trembling in a way that made every wolf in the entry hall soften toward her instantly. Cole's eyes found mine over her bowed head. He didn't look away. He didn't look sorry, either. He looked decided.

"She saved my life at the border," he told the gathered household, voice already rehearsed. "I owe her protection. I owe her family."

No one asked what she owed him.

That evening he called the pack into the great hall and said it louder, for everyone. "Flora stays under my personal protection. Indefinitely." His Alpha tone rolled through the room, pressing down on every spine, mine included—until I planted my feet and let it pass through me like wind through an open door.

I rose. "An Alpha who shelters a stranger over his mate's objection forfeits the right to call that mate's loyalty his," I said, not raising my voice. "If she stays, you forfeit the title."

Cole's jaw tightened. "You're being irrational, Victoria. You of all people should understand sacrifice."

The word landed like a slap dressed up as a compliment. I said nothing else. I walked out with my spine straight and my hands steady, and behind me I heard two hundred wolves holding their breath.

For three days, Flora moved through the pack house like she'd been born knowing its bones—casual walks that mapped patrol routes, soft murmurs to sympathetic ears about how hard it must be for me, wolfless, barren, watching my mate protect new life. I heard one of those murmurs from the corridor outside the sitting room. I didn't go in. I went to the library instead, pulled the pack law codex from its shelf, and opened it to Article Seven. My hand didn't shake as I marked it. Somewhere beneath my ribs, something long silent turned over in its sleep.

The Mate Ceremony filled the hall to its rafters. Flora sat in the front row, hand on her belly, eyes lowered in performed grief. Cole stood before the whole pack and spoke the words with a steadiness that told me he'd practiced them in a mirror.

"I, Cole Edwards, Alpha of Ironveil Pack, reject you, Victoria Miller, as my mate."

The mark went cold first. Then it went empty—like a door closing on a room with nothing left inside it. The bond snapped through my body like a wire pulled taut and cut, and my knee hit the floor before I decided to let it.

Then the pain found something older.

My bones broke and remade themselves in the same breath. Fur the color of moonlight tore through my skin, and I rose from the wreckage of my own body a wolf twice the size of any Alpha in that hall, my scent rolling out over the crowd like a verdict. Every wolf dropped to one knee. Cole staggered backward, white to the lips, his own wolf whimpering somewhere inside him for the first time in his life.

I shifted back. Stood naked and unbothered in the silence I'd made.

"The rejection is accepted," I said, and walked out. No one followed.

The next morning I summoned Marcus to the Alpha's library. He was Ironveil's most disciplined warrior, a wolf who'd never once needed to be told twice.

"You're my Beta," I told him, laying the codex open on Article Seven. "Effective on invocation."

He knelt—not from fear, I could smell the difference now. Recognition.

I handed him seventy-two hours of handwritten notes. Patrol inconsistencies. Flora's unexplained knowledge of routes she'd never walked before. Scent anomalies that didn't belong to any wolf born on our land.

"Find out what she is," I said.

He rose to go. Only after the door shut behind him did I let my fingers find the cold, fading place on my neck where Cole's mark used to sit—one unguarded second, no longer.

Then I folded my hands on the desk and reached for the next page.
