Chapter 2

Cole didn't knock. The library door slammed against the wall hard enough to rattle the codex shelves, and he filled the doorway with his shoulders squared, his jaw set in the shape I used to trust.

"Rescind it," he said. No greeting. No pretense. "Article Seven. Now."

I didn't stand. I kept my pen moving across the ledger in front of me, finishing the line I'd started before he arrived. "Rescind what, exactly?"

"You know exactly what." His voice dropped into the register he used on warriors who hesitated in formation—low, layered, meant to press down on the base of my skull until my knees remembered how to bend. "My wolf still holds command over this pack. You had no right."

The tone rolled toward me the way it always had. I waited for the old reflex—the tightening in my spine, the pull to submit. It didn't come. It washed over me and kept going, the way wind moves through a door left open, finding nothing to hold onto.

His eyes flickered. He felt it fail before I said a word.

I reached into the drawer at my left hand and set a folder on the desk between us, sliding it forward until it stopped an inch from his knuckles. "Border-entry logs. Flora Watson crossed into Ironveil territory eleven days before you brought her home, not the day of the skirmish you described to the pack." I looked up at him. "When you're ready to discuss pack law instead of volume, I'll be here."

His mouth opened. Nothing authoritative came out of it. He looked down at the folder like it might bite him, then back at me, and for the first time in the years I'd known him, I watched Cole Edwards search for a command his own wolf wouldn't hand him.

He left without the concession. The door didn't slam this time. It just clicked shut, careful, like a man testing whether the room still belonged to him.

Marcus found me an hour later at the same desk, his boots quiet on the floorboards, a single sheet of paper in his hand.

"Market entrance," he said. "A trader came through yesterday claiming a route out of Ashgrove. His scent doesn't match anyone registered on that route in three years." He set the paper down. "Flora spoke with him for four minutes near the grain stalls. Casual, to anyone watching. She didn't buy anything."

"Patrol schedules," I said. It wasn't a question.

"I can't confirm what she passed. Not yet." Marcus never gave me more than he could prove. "I've opened a file. Every interaction, cross-referenced against outside contact."

"Do it quietly," I said. "She isn't done underestimating me. Let her keep making that mistake."

He nodded once and left, and I sat with the cold certainty settling deeper into my chest—she was not a frightened stray Cole had rescued. She was a blade someone else had sharpened and pointed at my pack.

The dinner Cole convened that night was meant to look like healing. Candles down the long table, warriors and healers and omegas seated in careful proximity, Cole at the head declaring a "new chapter" for Ironveil in a voice that still hadn't recovered its old weight. Flora sat at his right hand, glowing with the soft lighting and softer sympathy the room kept offering her.

She waited until the second course to strike.

"I think Victoria deserves honesty," she said, voice trembling, hand pressed flat over her belly like she needed the touch to steady herself. "The wolfsbane silver—it didn't just take her wolf. It took everything after that too. She can't carry pups. A pack needs a Luna who can give it a future."

The table went silent in the particular way rooms go silent when everyone already suspects the wound but has never heard it named aloud.

I looked at Cole. I gave him one breath to correct her.

He didn't. "Victoria," he said instead, gentle in the way that was somehow crueler than shouting, "you should accept reality. Stop fighting what can't be changed."

I set my cup down. The click of porcelain against wood was the only sound in the hall.

"I, Victoria Miller, invoke Article Seven of Ironveil pack law," I said, and my voice didn't rise, didn't need to. "Cole Edwards is stripped of Alpha authority, effective immediately. His warriors are reassigned to my direct command." I turned my head toward Marcus, seated three chairs down, his spine already straightening. "Marcus is named Beta, in the same breath."

Cole shot up from his chair, chair legs screaming against the floor. "You have no right—" His Alpha tone cracked out across the table, a last, desperate wave meant to flatten every spine in the room.

Nothing bent. Every wolf at that table had already scented what I was. His command broke against it like water against stone, and the silence that followed wasn't fear.

It was arithmetic. And I had already won it.
