Chapter 4

I hear him before I see him — the storeroom door groaning on its hinge at an hour when no one has reason to be near it.

I'm coming up from the cellar with an empty water jug, and I stop at the mouth of the corridor because Ansel is standing very still in the doorway, looking at shelves that used to hold rows of moonflower jars stacked three deep.

There are four jars left.

He doesn't hear me right away. I watch his jaw work, watch him count the empty shelf space with his eyes the way a soldier counts casualties, and something in his face goes carefully, deliberately blank — the look of a man deciding not to ask a question out loud.

"Luna." He says it without turning, like he knew I was there the whole time.

"Ansel."

"The stores are low."

"They are."

He could ask why. He has every right to ask why — moonflower is healer's stock, pack property, and I am the one who's had the run of this room for three years. Instead he closes the storeroom door, quiet, careful, like he's tucking something away rather than shutting it out.

"I saw you moved your things," he says. Still not looking at me.

"I did."

A long pause. Then, so low I almost miss it: "If you need the north gate left open some night, the latch sticks. Takes a man a good ten minutes to notice it's been forced."

He walks away before I can answer, boots even and unhurried down the corridor, and I stand there with an empty jug in my hands and the first understanding that Ansel has been watching longer, and closer, than I ever let myself believe.

---

The message is in the cleft of the oldest magnolia at dawn, folded so small it could pass for a curled leaf if you didn't know to look.

I know to look. My mother taught me that tree before she taught me to read.

The paper says only a place, a time, and a single line in a hand I don't recognize: *The King will receive you.*

I burn the corner of it against the trunk until the words are gone, the way I've burned every message before it, and I stand there a moment with my palm flat against the bark, breathing in cold and old roots and something that feels, absurdly, like my mother's approval.

Ansel arranges the cover without my asking — a healer's consultation two territories over, a contagious rot in someone else's livestock that needs my particular hand. Killian barely looks up from his ledger when Ansel mentions it. "Fine," he says, already somewhere else, already fevered, already Colette's.

I am three hours gone before he thinks to ask when I'll be back.

---

The Lycan Court doesn't look the way I expected. No throne room drowning in gold, no crowd of courtiers watching me walk in. Just a long study with tall windows, a fire burned down to coals, and a man behind a table stacked with papers who doesn't rise when I enter.

"Luna Gardner." Cassian Vale's voice is level, unhurried, nothing performed in it at all. "Marcus tells me you don't want protective custody."

"I don't."

"Most people in your position would."

"Most people in my position haven't spent three years keeping their own executioner alive." I set my hands flat on the table's edge, not gripping, just resting. "I didn't come here to be rescued, Your Majesty. I came to trade."

Something shifts behind his eyes — not surprise, exactly. Recalculation. "Then trade."

We go an hour without either of us giving more ground than we have to. He wants names behind the Ashfall shipments; I give him three, and hold two back until he agrees the tribunal happens at the Winter Banquet, in front of every Alpha and Council witness who matters, not behind closed doors where Blackthorn can bury it quietly.

"You understand what you're asking," he says. "To stand up in front of three hundred wolves and name your own mate a murderer."

"I understand it better than anyone alive."

He studies me the way Marcus did at the border — cataloging, not admiring. "Then we have a date."

He writes it down himself. Doesn't hand it to a scribe, doesn't delegate it, the way I'm learning he delegates almost nothing that matters to him.

When I rise to go, he doesn't stand either, but his gaze follows me to the door, and there's a flicker there I can't name — not quite curiosity, not quite anything I have a word for — and it stays with me longer than it should, all the way back through the cold, all the way to the tree line where the magnolia's cleft is empty again, waiting for the next thing I'll have to burn.
