Chapter 5

Alpha Mira didn't ask why. She read the withdrawal line twice, signed under it, and poured me tea I didn't drink. Alpha Wren took longer — she held the accord papers against her chest like she was saying goodbye to something — but she signed too, and told me to send word before the frost came, the way we always did. By the third visit, to old Alpha Peregrine, I didn't even have to explain. He looked at my face and said, "Whatever you're building, Athena, I hope it burns clean," and put his name where I asked him to. Three signatures. Three threads pulled loose from a hem no one in Blackthorn had noticed was fraying.

By the time I got back, Killian already knew something was wrong — just not what, or how much.

I heard it through the study door, Ansel's voice flat and reporting. "Silver Ridge hasn't answered the patrol request in six days. Wrenmoor returned the border agreement unsigned. Two more territories aren't taking calls at all."

"They'll crawl back after the marking rite," Killian said. "They always do."

I didn't need to see him to know his hand was shaking when he signed whatever was in front of him — Ansel told me later, not as an apology, just a fact laid down between us like a stone. He came to the cellar that night for the first time, ducking under the low beam, looking at the cot and the tally marks on the wall without asking what they meant.

"You leave for the Banquet in four days," he said.

"I know."

"If you need anything for the road—"

"I need nothing." I studied him a moment, the guilt he still carried like a second skin, seven years old and never once spoken aloud between us. "Yet."

He nodded, once, and left the way he'd come.

---

Colette staged it in the front hall, where the staff would see, holding the forfeiture deed like a torch she meant to burn something with.

"This is mine," she said, loud enough to carry up the stairs. "Killian signed it. The grove is mine now, wolfless."

I took the paper from her hand. The ink had smeared slightly where his fingers had trembled over the signature line — a small thing, the kind of detail only someone counting his tremors would notice. I read it once, top to bottom, then handed it back.

"Then you'll want to read the grove's soil records," I said. "The moonflower requires very specific care."

Her face didn't change. She didn't understand the words, only that I hadn't flinched the way she wanted me to, and that unsettled her more than an argument would have. She opened her mouth, closed it, and swept off toward the stairs with the deed pressed to her chest like a medal she hadn't earned.

I let her go. She could keep the paper. Paper wasn't roots.

---

Roan found me the evening before the Banquet, exactly where he must have known I'd be — at the cellar wall, my finger resting against the newest mark, the count climbing toward a number I'd stopped saying out loud even to myself.

"I'll be at the Banquet," he said.

"Stand near the dais."

He nodded once, the way he always did when he understood more than he'd ask about, and turned for the stairs. I heard his footsteps recede, steady, unhurried, then the groan of the cellar door swinging shut behind him.

I stood alone with the candle guttering low, my hand still flat against the wall, and let myself breathe for the length of one held count.

Then the door groaned open again.

The steps that came down weren't Roan's. They were uneven — too heavy on the left, a rhythm I'd counted through a hallway wall two weeks ago and hadn't forgotten since. The candlelight caught the shadow first, long and wrong against the stone, stretching over the tally marks before he did.

"What," Killian said, from the bottom step, "is that."
