Chapter 4

The convoy came before we reached the gates.

I heard them first. Engines. Multiple. Moving fast on the access road that led to Ironridge's main entrance. Collin heard them too. He stopped walking. The two deltas flanking us went rigid.

Nova pressed tighter against my chest. My shoulder was still bleeding where his claws had gone in. The blood soaked through my shirt and into her fur, but she didn't squirm. She just watched the tree line with her ears flat.

Then the vehicles appeared.

Black SUVs. Five of them. No pack markings. Just a crest on the lead door that caught the moonlight and held it: silver, angular, unmistakable even from a distance. The Lycan royal seal.

Collin went very still.

The convoy didn't slow at the border marker. Didn't stop at the gate. It tore straight through Ironridge territory without announcement, without permission, and the warriors stationed at the perimeter froze mid-formation. I saw one of them start to raise his hand, then drop it. His wolf knew better than his brain did.

The vehicles stopped in a half-circle twenty feet from where we stood. The engines cut. The silence that followed felt heavier than the sound.

Collin's jaw tightened. He didn't move. Neither did the deltas. I held Nova and tried to breathe quietly through the pain in my shoulder.

The back door of the lead vehicle opened.

A man stepped out.

He was tall. Dark hair, dark suit, the kind of stillness that doesn't come from calm—it comes from absolute control. He stood beside the vehicle and did nothing. Just stood. Waited. His posture was contained, precise, like every muscle had been given exact instructions and followed them without question.

Then the wind shifted.

I felt it before I understood it. A pull. Low in my chest, beneath the scar, in the hollow where my wolf used to live. Something woke up and turned toward him the way a compass turns north.

His head snapped toward me.

His eyes—dark, human—went wolf in the space of a breath. Not a flicker. A full surface. Gold iris, black pupil, the kind of shift that doesn't ask permission. His wolf looked at me through his face, and I felt the weight of it from twenty feet away.

He didn't look away.

Collin stepped forward. "This is Ironridge territory. You have no—"

The man turned his head. Slowly. Deliberately. He looked at Collin the way you look at something that's made a sound you don't need to hear twice.

Then he spoke.

One word. Quiet. Flat. Carrying a harmonic resonance I had never heard before—deeper than voice, older than language, the kind of sound that bypasses your ears and goes straight into your bones.

"Kneel."

Collin's knees hit the dirt.

So did the deltas'. So did every warrior in formation behind us. I heard them drop in a wave—thirty wolves, maybe more—all of them on the ground in less than a second.

I stayed on my feet. So did Nova.

Collin's face went white. His hands were flat on the dirt. His whole body was locked in place, trembling with the effort of trying to stand and failing. His wolf—I could see it in his eyes—had curled into itself and would not move.

The man walked forward.

He moved like water. Smooth. Unhurried. He stopped five feet from Collin and looked down at him with no expression at all.

"Release the woman and the child," he said.

Collin's hands opened.

Not his choice. His fingers just—spread. Like his body had decided without him.

Nova scrambled out of my arms and dropped to the ground beside me. She pressed against my legs, growling low, but she didn't run.

The man's eyes came back to me.

He didn't grab. Didn't command. He just walked forward until he was close enough that I could smell him.

Rich. Warm. Something underneath it that I couldn't name but my body knew. My chest answered it before my mind could. The hollow beneath my scar—silent for three years—stirred.

He extended his hand. Palm up. Open. Waiting.

He said nothing.

I looked at his hand. I looked at his face. His eyes were still wolf, but they weren't hunting. They were searching. And the searching had stopped.

I didn't think. I just moved.

I took his hand.

His fingers closed around mine—careful, deliberate, like he was holding something that might break if he pressed too hard. His skin was warm. The touch didn't make me flinch.

That was the part that made me stop breathing.

Three years. Three years of flinching at every hand that came near me. And his touch landed, and I felt—nothing. No recoil. No panic. Just warmth.

He lifted me. One arm under my knees, one behind my back, and I was off the ground before I could process it. Nova barked once—sharp, worried—and he looked down at her.

"Come," he said. Quiet. Not a command. An invitation.

Nova looked at me. I nodded. She followed.

He carried me to the lead vehicle. The door was already open. He set me on the seat with the same careful precision he'd used to lift me, then stepped back and waited while Nova jumped in beside me.

He looked at my shoulder. At the blood soaking through my shirt. His jaw tightened, but he didn't touch it. He just pulled a blanket from the back seat, draped it over my lap, and closed the door.

Through the window I saw him turn back toward Collin.

Collin was still on his knees. His head was down. His hands were shaking.

The man—the Lycan Prince, because that's what he had to be—looked at him for a long moment. Then he turned and walked to his own vehicle.

The convoy pulled away.

I looked back once. Collin was still kneeling in the dirt. Marcus stood behind him, hands at his sides, watching the taillights disappear.

Nova pressed her nose against my arm. I put my hand on her head and held it there.

The man in the front seat—the driver—glanced at me in the rearview mirror. "We're taking you to the Lycan estate," he said. "You're safe now."

I didn't answer. I just looked out the window at the trees blurring past and tried to understand what had just happened.

My shoulder throbbed. My chest ached. And beneath the scar, in the place where my wolf used to be, something was waking up.
