Chapter 3

They didn't take me to a cell.

Rowan dragged me through the side corridors, away from the great hall, away from the murmuring crowd. Two more enforcers fell into step behind us. I didn't recognize them. Their faces were blank, professional. They had done this before.

We stopped in a room I'd never seen. Stone walls. A single table in the center, heavy and scarred. No windows.

Rowan shoved me forward. I stumbled, catching myself against the edge of the table.

"Hands," he said.

I looked at him. My voice came out flat. "What?"

"Put your hands on the table."

I didn't move.

One of the enforcers grabbed my left arm, wrenching it forward. The other took my right. They slammed my palms down against the stone, holding them flat. I tried to pull back. Their grip tightened, fingers digging into my wrists.

The door opened.

Ariella stepped inside.

She had wiped away the tears. Her face was calm now, composed. She crossed the room slowly, her heels clicking softly against the stone. She stopped a few feet from the table and looked down at my outstretched hands.

"I didn't want this," she said softly.

I stared at her. My wolf snarled weakly in the back of my mind, too exhausted to do more.

"You're lying," I whispered.

Ariella's expression didn't change. "You brought this on yourself, Eva. You were always going to self-destruct. I just... helped it along."

She nodded once.

Rowan moved. He lifted something from the floor — a cloth bundle, wrapped tight. He set it on the table beside my hands and unwrapped it slowly.

Shattered glass. Dozens of pieces, jagged and glittering. And threaded through them, thin silver wire, coiled and sharp.

My stomach dropped.

"No," I said. My voice cracked. "No, please—"

Rowan didn't look at me. He gathered the glass and wire into his hands, the edges cutting into his palms. He didn't flinch.

"Hold her steady," he said.

The enforcers pressed down harder. My hands were pinned, fingers splayed, completely exposed.

I looked past Ariella, toward the door. Hayes stood there.

He was watching.

Our eyes met. Just for a moment.

I didn't beg. I didn't plead. I just looked at him, my fated mate, the man the Moon Goddess had chosen, and waited for him to stop this.

He looked away first.

Rowan brought the glass down.

The pain was immediate, white-hot, obliterating. The shattered edges tore into my palms, my fingers, grinding deep. The silver wire burned, searing through skin and muscle, burrowing into tendon and bone. I felt something snap in my left hand. Then my right.

I didn't scream.

I bit down on my tongue until I tasted blood. My vision blurred. My wolf howled, a sound that came from somewhere deep and broken, and then went silent.

Rowan twisted the glass, pressing it deeper.

I heard bone crack.

The enforcers held me down. Ariella watched, her expression serene. Hayes stayed in the doorway, his face carved from stone.

When Rowan finally pulled back, my hands were unrecognizable. Blood pooled on the table, dripping onto the floor. The silver contamination was already spreading, a dark, creeping stain beneath my skin.

My gift — the thing I had spent my entire life building, the only part of me that had ever mattered — was gone.

The enforcers let go. I collapsed forward, my ruined hands cradling against my chest. I couldn't feel my fingers. I couldn't feel anything except the silver, burning.

"Take her to the compound," Hayes said quietly.

Rowan hauled me upright. I couldn't stand. He dragged me toward the door.

I looked back once.

Ariella was smiling.

---

The vehicle was dark, cold. I sat in the back, my hands wrapped in blood-soaked cloth. The motion made me sick. I pressed my forehead against the window and watched the pack house disappear behind us.

We drove for hours. The roads grew rough, unpaved. Trees closed in on either side, thick and lightless.

When we finally stopped, I was barely conscious.

Rowan opened the door and pulled me out. I fell to my knees in the dirt. He didn't help me up.

The compound loomed ahead — a low, concrete structure surrounded by chain-link fencing. Guard towers at each corner. Floodlights cutting through the dark.

A rogue detention facility. I'd heard of them. Places where Alphas sent wolves they wanted to forget.

Rowan handed me over to the guards without a word. They didn't ask questions. They just took my arms — careful to avoid my hands — and dragged me inside.

The halls smelled like mildew and old blood. They threw me into a cell at the end of the corridor. The door slammed shut. The lock clicked.

I lay on the floor, my hands throbbing, the silver burning deeper with every heartbeat.

I didn't know how long I stayed there. Days, maybe. Weeks. Time stopped meaning anything.

The guards came occasionally. They brought water, sometimes. Food, rarely. They asked questions I didn't answer. When I didn't speak, they left me in the dark.

The silver exposure was deliberate. I could feel it suppressing my wolf, pushing her further and further down. My hands didn't heal. The wounds festered, the bones knitting wrong, the tendons severed beyond repair.

I stopped counting days.

---

My wolf spoke to me in the isolation cell.

I had been moved there after I stopped responding to the guards' questions. It was smaller than the first cell, windowless, the walls pressing in. I sat in the corner, my hands cradled against my chest, and stared at nothing.

*Eva.*

Her voice was faint, threadbare.

I didn't answer.

*Eva, listen to me.*

I closed my eyes. "Go away."

*The bond,* she said. *It feels wrong.*

I opened my eyes slowly.

*It's hollow,* she continued. *Like a door that was locked from the other side. A long time ago.*

I didn't move. Didn't breathe.

*He did something,* my wolf whispered. *Before the fire. Before the tribunal. He did something to us, and we didn't feel it because we were already breaking.*

The realization settled over me, cold and clarifying.

Hayes had rejected the bond.

Not publicly. Not formally, in a way that would have let me feel it, fight it, survive it.

He had done it quietly. Secretly. Months ago, maybe. And he had let me go on believing the bond still existed, let me suffer under the weight of a connection that was already dead.

I had never been his mate.

I had been his mistake.

I sat there in the dark, my ruined hands throbbing, my wolf barely breathing, and felt something inside me finally, irrevocably break.

And in the breaking, I found something else.

Clarity.
