My Alpha Publicly Rejected Me for Another Woman Chapter 1

The bond broke at exactly the moment Preston dropped my hands.

Not gently. Not with hesitation. He just—let go. Like setting down something he'd carried too long and never wanted.

I felt it before I heard the words. The mark on my neck went cold first, a spreading numbness that moved down my spine like ice water. Three years of warmth, three years of that low, steady hum that told me I was his and he was mine—gone in the space of a single breath.

Then he spoke.

"I, Preston, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Ella Brooks, as my mate and Luna."

The hall went silent. Three hundred wolves, and not one of them made a sound.

The mark didn't just go cold. It cracked. I felt it split open like a fault line running from my neck to the center of my chest, and the pain was—God, it was physical. My knees hit the stone floor before I even decided to fall. The air left my lungs. My wolf, who had always been so quiet, so frustratingly silent, let out one single sound—a high, thin whimper—and then went still.

I pressed my palm flat against the floor. Cold marble. Real. Solid.

Two breaths. That's all I allowed myself.

I heard the rustle of fabric behind me. I heard Preston's voice, softer now, almost tender in a way that made my stomach turn. "Zoey."

I didn't turn around. I didn't need to. The scent hit me first—something floral and sharp, Zoey Cox's perfume layered over Preston's cedar and pine, already woven together like they'd been standing close for a very long time. Longer than tonight.

The wet sound of a bite. A collective inhale from three hundred wolves.

I heard Zoey gasp—not in pain. In satisfaction.

I stood up.

My legs shook, but I stood. I turned around because I needed them to see my face when I did what came next.

Preston's teeth were still at Zoey's neck. She stood at my altar, in a crimson gown she'd clearly planned weeks in advance, her expression the kind of triumphant that only comes from a long wait finally over. The mark on her neck was already visible, already—

Already flickering.

I saw it. A faint pulse, like a candle in wind. Not the steady golden glow of a true Luna bond. Something thin. Something wrong.

I knew why. And so would every Elder and visiting Alpha in this room, if I said the words.

So I said them.

My voice came out steadier than I expected. It cut through the silence like a blade.

"Under the Luna Accord, witnessed by this assembly and the Lycan Council's emissary"—I didn't look at the man in the emissary's seat, but I felt his attention sharpen like a physical thing—"I invoke the clause of groundless mid-ceremony rejection. Alpha Preston Alexander has severed a fated mate bond before this assembly without Council arbitration, without cause, and without right. By the law of the Moon Goddess, he forfeits the right to carry a true Luna bond. Now. And permanently."

The words were law the moment they left my lips. Everyone in this hall knew it.

Preston's face went white.

Zoey's mark flickered again. Then dimmed. The visiting Alphas along the left wall began exchanging sharp, quiet looks. I heard someone whisper the word *Accord* like they were confirming something they hadn't believed they'd actually witness.

In the emissary's seat, the Lycan Prince—Wilder Pierce, though I only knew him by title then—went very still. His eyes found mine across the hall. Dark, focused, unreadable. He did not look away.

Preston recovered fast. I'll give him that.

"Take her," he said. His Alpha tone cracked through the room like a whip, and I felt it press against my chest, heavy and commanding. Two warriors moved toward me from the side.

I let them take my arms. There was no point in fighting it here. Not yet.

But as they walked me toward the threshold, I turned my head and spoke loud enough for every witness in that hall to hear.

"The Accord's invocation is witnessed, recorded, and irreversible."

Then I was outside.

---

They put me in a room in the lower quarters. Stone walls, a narrow bed, no window. Someone had already taken my ceremonial dress. My phone was gone. The pack mind-link was—muffled, like trying to hear voices through water.

The rejection scar throbbed with a cold I couldn't get warm from.

I sat on the edge of the bed and breathed.

An hour passed. Maybe two. Then the door opened.

Elder Christina came in first, carrying a clay mug in both hands like an offering. She wore her silver hair pinned back, her expression arranged into something she probably thought looked like sympathy. Behind her, Zoey leaned against the doorframe in that crimson gown, the dull mark on her neck half-hidden by her hair.

"Herbal tea," Christina said, setting the mug on the floor beside me. "For the pain."

"Ella." Zoey's voice was sweet in the way that things are sweet when they're rotting. "Three years. Can you imagine?" She tilted her head. "Thinking gratitude was love. Thinking managing his calendar and healing his warriors made you a Luna." A small, pitying smile. "You were a glorified maid, sweetheart. A very devoted one."

I picked up the mug.

I could smell it—underneath the chamomile, underneath the honey, something bitter. Faint. Almost nothing.

Almost.

I looked at Christina. She met my gaze without flinching.

I raised the mug to my lips.
