Chapter 3

I signed the document at 9:00 AM in Marcus's kitchen, the pen scratching across the paper with a sound that felt too loud. My initials looked small at the bottom. Neat. Official.

I dated it. Then I pulled out my phone and photographed the entire page—signature, date, the council's seal at the top. The light from the window caught the ink just right. Every word legible.

Marcus stood by the stove, pretending to make coffee he wouldn't drink. He didn't ask what I was signing. He just handed me an envelope when I finished.

"For the courier," he said quietly.

I sealed the document inside and set it on the table. My wolf paced. Not the frantic clawing from before. Something slower. Deliberate.

*You're giving them what they want,* she said.

*I'm buying time,* I told her.

She didn't answer. But she didn't go silent either.

The courier arrived ten minutes later. I handed over the envelope and watched him leave. Then I walked to the vault.

The guard waved me through without checking my credentials. Emergency medical access, Damien had said. I wondered how long it would last.

Inside, the vault smelled the same. Sage and silver dust. I went straight to the cabinet where I'd stored my father's antidote and found the three remaining doses exactly where I'd left them. I measured out the first carefully, labeled it, and set it aside for transport to Silverpine.

Then I turned to the archive section.

Shadowridge kept physical records of every formula synthesized within pack territory. It was old-fashioned, but thorough. Each entry included the date, the healer's signature, and a sample of the compound for verification.

I found my silver-antidote formula in the third drawer.

The label had been changed.

*Developed by Allie Crane, Healer Consultant, Shadowridge Pack. Date: March 14.*

March 14 was six weeks after I'd synthesized it. Six weeks after I'd logged it in my own journal with my own signature and the original synthesis date.

I pulled out my phone and photographed the relabeled entry. Then I opened my father's journal to the corresponding page—my handwriting, my initials, the real date—and photographed that too. Side by side.

I moved to the next drawer. My wolfsbane burn treatment. Relabeled. Allie Crane, April 2.

I'd developed it in January.

Photograph. Journal page. Side by side.

The respiratory infection remedy I'd created for the northern border patrols last winter. Relabeled. Allie Crane, February 20.

I'd finished it in November.

I worked through the entire archive section. Twelve formulas. Twelve relabeled entries. Twelve pieces of evidence that would make my journals look like copies instead of originals if I didn't document the chain now.

My wolf stopped pacing. She sat. Watching.

*They're erasing you,* she said.

*They're trying to,* I corrected.

I saved every photograph to a cloud folder with timestamps. Then I copied them to a separate drive I kept in my coat pocket. Redundancy. My father had taught me that.

I was sealing the last cabinet when I heard voices in the corridor outside.

Two Deltas. Their footsteps echoed off the stone walls, casual and unhurried.

"—can't believe the Alpha created a whole new position for her," one of them said. "Head healer consultant. That's not even a real rank."

"Doesn't matter if it's real," the other replied. "The visiting Alphas are already sending correspondence to her instead of—well. You know."

A pause.

"Heard the Crescent Ridge Alpha asked for her specifically at the next summit. Said she's the one who developed that respiratory treatment that saved his Beta's pup."

"She didn't develop it. She just—"

"I know. But that's not what the records say anymore."

Their voices faded as they moved past the vault entrance.

I stood very still. My hand rested on the cabinet door, fingers pressed against the cold metal.

My wolf snarled. Not the muted warning from before. A full, visceral sound that vibrated through my chest.

*They gave her your title,* she said. Her voice was sharp. Clear. The clearest it had been since the bond broke.

*Write it down,* she continued. *We'll read it aloud at the tribunal.*

I pulled out my notebook. The small one I kept for field notes. I wrote the date. The time. The exact words I'd heard.

*Head healer consultant. Correspondence addressed to Allie. Crescent Ridge Alpha requesting her by name.*

I added a note: *Check official pack communications log. Cross-reference with my original formula development dates.*

My hand was steady. My wolf sat in my mind, no longer pacing. Waiting.

I closed the notebook and slipped it back into my pocket.

Then I picked up my father's antidote and walked out of the vault.

The guard nodded as I passed. He didn't look at my face.

I made it three steps into the corridor before I had to stop and lean against the wall.

Not from pain. Not from exhaustion.

From the weight of understanding exactly what I was building.

Evidence. Provenance. A chain of documentation that required no one's testimony but my own.

I had given Damien his signed confession. I had bought my father's life with a lie.

But I had also built a record that would outlast every word Damien ever spoke.

I pushed off the wall and kept walking.

My wolf walked with me. Not silent. Not subdued.

Waiting.
