Chapter 4

I worked through the night in the vault, my hands moving with a precision that felt like muscle memory. The silver-antidote required exact measurements—too much and it would burn through healthy tissue, too little and the poison would continue spreading. I had synthesized it once before. I could do it again.

The vault was silent except for the soft clink of glass vials and the scratch of my pen against paper as I documented each step. My wolf circled in my mind, restless but focused. She didn't speak. She just watched.

By 4:00 AM, I had a partial batch. Three doses. Not enough for a full treatment cycle, but enough to buy my father days. Maybe a week if the Silverpine healer rationed carefully.

I labeled each vial with my father's name and the dosage instructions. Then I pulled out my phone and sent a message to Mira, the Silverpine Pack healer I'd trained with years ago. She responded within minutes.

*I'll pick it up personally. North border crossing at dawn. No records.*

I typed back a single word: *Understood.*

Then I sealed the vials in a temperature-controlled case and set it by the vault door.

The ventilation system hissed softly overhead. I glanced up at the ductwork—old iron grates, installed decades ago when the vault was first built. My father had always said the vault's air circulation was the best in Shadowridge territory. Clean. Filtered. Safe for sensitive compounds.

I went back to my notes and started calculating the materials I'd need for a full batch. The partial synthesis had depleted the vault's silver-root supply. I'd have to request more from the pack's main storage, which meant filling out a requisition form that would go directly to Damien's desk.

My pen hovered over the paper.

Then I set it down and opened my laptop instead. I drafted the requisition as a formal email, citing emergency medical necessity and my temporary vault access authorization. I attached a copy of the signed confession document—the one that bought my father's life—as proof of my cooperation.

I sent it at 4:47 AM.

By 5:30, I was walking back to my room with the antidote case tucked under my arm. The sky was starting to lighten, pale grey bleeding into black. The air smelled like frost and pine.

Mira would be at the border crossing in thirty minutes. My father would have his treatment by noon.

I climbed the steps to my room and stopped.

A single sprig of wolfsbane lay on the doorstep. Fresh. The purple flowers were still closed, the stem recently cut. No note. No signature.

I stared at it for a long moment.

Wolfsbane was toxic to werewolves even in small amounts. Concentrated, it could burn through skin on contact. In the old days, packs used it to mark boundaries. To warn rogues away.

Or to send a message.

I crouched down and examined the sprig without touching it. The cut was clean. Deliberate. Someone had placed it here within the last hour—after I'd entered the vault, while I was working alone.

My wolf snarled. Not a warning. A promise.

*They know what you're doing,* she said.

*Good,* I thought back.

I stood and stepped over the wolfsbane carefully. Then I unlocked my door, set the antidote case on the table, and pulled out my phone to photograph the sprig from my window.

The image was clear. Time-stamped. Geotagged to my exact location.

I added it to my evidence folder.

Then I sat down and opened my laptop again.

The inter-pack regulatory council's website loaded slowly. I navigated to the formal request portal and filled out the fields one by one. *Requesting party: Cora Ashveil. Relationship to accused: Daughter. Document requested: Full complaint filing, witness testimonies, and supporting evidence in Case #4721-B, Gamma Elias Ashveil.*

I cited my right as family representative under Section 12 of the inter-pack regulatory code. I attached my identification documents and a signed statement affirming my legal standing.

I submitted the request at 6:02 AM.

The automated response arrived three minutes later: *Your request has been received and is under review. Response time: 5-7 business days.*

I closed the laptop and looked out the window. The sun was rising. Mira would be crossing the border soon.

My phone buzzed.

A message from the regulatory council. Not automated this time.

*Request #9847 has been denied. Reason: Filing sponsor holds Alpha authority over document access. Contact Shadowridge Pack leadership for authorization.*

I read it twice.

Then I opened the message details and took a screenshot. The denial was signed by a council administrator, but the authorization block showed Damien's name. He had co-signed Allie's complaint.

My wolf went very still.

*He knew,* she said quietly. *He knew what she was filing, and he signed it anyway.*

I saved the screenshot to my evidence folder. Then I opened a new document and started typing.

*Preliminary Petition to the Lycan Council. Article 9: Sanctuary and Jurisdiction. Petitioner: Cora Ashveil. Grounds: Coordinated harm within former pack territory by Alpha authority and affiliated party, resulting in denial of medical access, falsified accusations against family member, and direct threats to petitioner's safety.*

I wrote for two hours. Every incident. Every document. Every photograph. I built the petition the way my father had taught me to build formulas—precise, documented, undeniable.

When I finished, I saved three copies. One to the cloud. One to my external drive. One printed and sealed in an envelope addressed to the Lycan Council's main office in Ironveil territory.

I would mail it tomorrow.

Tonight, I had one more batch to synthesize.

The winter moon was three days away—the last moon of the season, when the vault's air circulation was at its peak and the temperature control was most stable. Perfect conditions for sensitive compounds.

I gathered my journals and my father's notes. I made a list of every material I'd need. Then I lay down on the narrow bed and closed my eyes.

My wolf curled up in my mind. Not pacing. Not clawing.

Waiting.

*Three more days,* I told her.

She didn't answer. But I felt her agreement like a weight settling into place.

Three more days. Then I would finish what I started.

And I would make sure everyone remembered exactly who had built it first.
