Chapter 2

I took a room at the edge of Shadowridge territory three days after the basement. It was small—one window, a narrow bed, a table barely wide enough for my journals. The landlord, a retired Delta named Marcus, didn't ask questions. He saw the blood still staining the collar of my coat and looked away.

The room was close enough to the pack herb vault that I could access my father's treatment supplies. Far enough from the pack house that no one would knock.

I set my father's healer journal on the table. Then my own research notebooks—five years of formulas, dated and initialed in my own hand. I opened the first one and started writing.

Every stolen credit. Every redirected formula. Every treaty I drafted that Damien presented under Allie's name. I cross-referenced dates with pack records I had copied before leaving. I built a timeline that could survive scrutiny.

My wolf circled in my mind. Not the forced silence of the bond's suppression. Something restless. Waiting.

I worked through the night. When dawn came, I walked to the vault.

The guard at the entrance was new. Young. He looked at my face and stepped aside without a word. I wondered what he saw there.

Inside, the vault smelled like dried sage and silver dust. I found the antidote I had synthesized for my father—the one Damien had redirected to Allie's mother—and checked the remaining supply. Three doses left. Enough for two weeks if I rationed carefully.

I was measuring the second dose when my phone buzzed.

A message from the Silverpine Pack healer. My father's condition had entered critical phase. The silver-laced poison was spreading faster than expected. Without consistent treatment, he had days. Maybe less.

I stared at the vial in my hand. Three doses. Two weeks.

My phone buzzed again.

This time it was an official notification from the inter-pack regulatory council. A formal accusation had been filed against Gamma Elias Ashveil of Silverpine Pack for resource fraud during his tenure. The investigation would begin immediately. All related assets—including medical supplies stored in allied pack vaults—would be frozen pending review.

I read it twice. Then I checked the filing signature.

Allie Crane, witness and concerned pack member.

My hands didn't shake. I set the vial down carefully, closed the vault cabinet, and walked out.

Marcus was sweeping the front step when I returned. He glanced up, saw my face, and went back to sweeping.

I sat at the table and opened my laptop. The accusation document was already uploaded to the council's public database. I read through it slowly.

Allie claimed that during Elias's time as Gamma, Silverpine had reported supply shortages that didn't match distribution records. She suggested the discrepancies indicated systematic theft. She included testimony from three wolves I had never heard of and a signature from a Silverpine elder who had been dead for two years.

It was precise. Detailed. Completely fabricated.

And it would take months to disprove through official channels.

My father didn't have months.

I closed the laptop and sat very still.

My phone rang. I knew who it was before I answered.

Damien's voice came through clear and controlled. No Alpha tone. Not yet.

"Cora. We need to talk."

I said nothing.

"The council investigation is going to be difficult for everyone," he continued. "Allie is—she's fragile right now. The stress of the accusation process could destabilize her wolf. You know how dangerous that is for a rogue-born."

I watched a bird land on the windowsill outside. It tilted its head, looking in.

"There's a way to resolve this quietly," Damien said. "If you accept responsibility for a minor supply discrepancy—just a clerical error, nothing criminal—the council will close the investigation. Your father's treatment access will be restored. Allie's wolf will be protected."

The bird flew away.

"It's a small thing," Damien added. His voice dropped lower. Almost gentle. "A signature on a document. No one has to suffer."

I thought about my father lying in Silverpine's medical wing, silver spreading through his veins. I thought about the three doses in the vault that I could no longer access. I thought about Allie's signature on a document accusing a dying man of fraud he never committed.

"Cora." Damien's voice shifted. Not quite Alpha tone, but the pressure was there. The expectation of compliance. "This is the merciful choice. For everyone."

I looked at the journals spread across my table. Five years of work. Dated. Initialed. Undeniable.

"I'll sign," I said.

Damien exhaled. Relief. "Good. I'll have the document sent over—"

"On one condition."

Silence.

"I need vault access restored immediately," I said. "Before I sign. My father has seventy-two hours at most."

"Cora—"

"Those are my terms."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Fine," Damien said finally. "I'll authorize emergency medical access. But the document needs to be signed within twenty-four hours."

"Understood."

He hung up.

I set the phone down and opened my father's journal. The pages were worn, the ink faded in places. His handwriting was careful. Precise. Every formula annotated. Every treatment dated.

He had taught me that worth was demonstrated through work. Through loyalty. Through enduring what came without complaint.

I traced one finger over his notes.

Then I picked up my pen and started writing again.

Not a confession. A record.

Every conversation with Damien. Every pressure point. Every moment he had framed coercion as mercy.

My wolf stirred. Still muted, but no longer silent.

Waiting.

I wrote until my hand cramped. Until the sun set and the room went dark. Until I had documented every single thing that had brought me to this table, in this room, at the edge of a territory that had never been mine.

Then I closed the journal and sat in the dark.

Tomorrow I would sign Damien's document. I would save my father's life with a lie.

But I would remember the price.

And I would make sure everyone else did too.
