My Alpha Let My Mother Die Chapter 1

The wolfsbane hit Maren's bloodstream at 6:47 on a Thursday morning, and I was scrubbing dried wine off the banquet hall floor when the alarm sounded.

I heard it—three short pulses, the rogue incursion signal—and felt something shift in my chest. Not fear. Something older than fear. A low vibration, deep and silver, like a bell struck once in a locked room.

I dropped the brush and ran.

Dara was already in the medical wing corridor when I got there, her healer's kit clutched against her chest, her expression doing the thing it always did when she had bad news and no authority to act on it.

"Wolfsbane," she said, before I could ask. "Slow-acting compound. Your mother was brought in twenty minutes ago. She's conscious but—" She stopped. "Kora. I have the treatment. I have everything I need."

I already knew what came next. I'd read the pack law documents enough times to recite them in my sleep.

"Alpha command," I said.

Dara looked at the floor. "Pack law requires direct authorization before I can administer it. If he commands it, I can start within the hour. The compound is slow. There's still time."

The vibration in my chest pressed harder against my ribs. My wolf—dormant for two years, silent for longer than that—pushed against the inside of my sternum like something that had been compressed too long and was running out of patience.

I was already moving.

August's private study was at the end of the east wing. I didn't knock. I pushed the door open and stepped inside, and I saw Regina before I saw him—positioned at his shoulder, one hand resting lightly on the back of his chair, her expression shifting into something warm and concerned the moment she registered my face.

August stood at the window. He turned when I entered, and for one second—just one—something moved behind his eyes. His wolf recognizing mine, maybe. Or what was left of mine.

I knelt on the stone floor. Not because I wanted to. Because in Shadowvale, Omegas knelt before Alphas, and I needed him to hear me.

"Wolfsbane," I said. My voice came out steady. I was proud of that. "Slow-acting compound. Maren is in the medical wing. Dara has the treatment ready. She needs your command to administer it. That's all. One word from you and it's done."

August went very still.

It was the stillness I'd watched him use a hundred times—the pause his pack read as Alpha deliberation, careful and considered. I'd believed that once. I knew better now. It was the pause of a man overriding something he didn't want to listen to.

"August." Regina's voice was warm, advisory, the tone she used when she was steering him somewhere he'd already half-decided to go. "You remember what happened last month. The storage incident. She came to you then with an emergency too."

"My mother is dying," I said.

"She's frightened," Regina said, as if I hadn't spoken. "She's been looking for reasons to come to you. You've noticed it yourself." A small, sympathetic pause. "This is the bond, August. She's using it. You know how to handle this."

I watched his jaw tighten. I watched him make the decision.

"Kora."

His Alpha tone came through our incomplete bond like a hand closing around my throat—not painful, just absolute. The resonance of it traveled through the partial mark he'd never completed, and my body received it before my mind could argue.

"Stay away from the healer's quarters."

The compulsion locked my legs mid-rise. I felt my muscles seize, my body obeying what every conscious part of me was screaming against. I pressed my thumb into the center of my opposite palm—hard, harder, until the skin went white—the only resistance my body would allow me.

"She's manipulating you," Regina said softly, smoothing something on his desk. The angle of a pen. "You made the right call."

I don't remember leaving the study. I remember the corridor floor against my knees. I remember pressing my back against the cold stone wall and pressing my thumb into my palm until I felt the bone beneath the skin, and I remember the exact moment—three hours later, in the grey hour before dawn—when I heard my mother's voice rise from across the pack house, and then break, and then go silent.

The incomplete mark pulsed once in my chest. Cold. Indifferent. Then it settled back into its usual silence, like a door closing in an empty room.

Before sunrise, I heard Regina's footsteps in the corridor. Measured. Unhurried. I watched through the gap beneath the door as she passed—her shoes precise and even on the stone—and she paused once to straighten the angle of a cup on the corridor table before she walked away.

I pressed my thumb into my palm one final time.

Then I got up, and I went back to work.

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows through the human town's market square as I wandered between the stalls, breathing in the mingled scents of fresh bread and blooming flowers. Here, among humans who knew nothing of pack hierarchies or mate bonds, I could pretend to be just another woman selecting roses for her dining table. My fingers traced the velvet petals of a deep crimson rose, and for a moment, I allowed myself to imagine Ethan's face when he saw them on our table tonight. Three years together, and I still hoped for those rare moments when his cold facade would crack, revealing glimpses of the mate bond I believed lay dormant beneath. "Beautiful choice," the elderly vendor said, her weathered hands wrapping the stems in brown paper. "Someone special?" "My mate," I replied softly, the word still sending a flutter through my chest despite everything. The woman's knowing smile faltered as a chill swept through the warm evening air. The market sounds—haggling voices, children's laughter, the clink of coins—seemed to dim as four figures materialized from the crowd. Victoria Taylor stood at their center, her blonde hair catching the dying light like spun gold. Three Delta wolves flanked her, their presence turning the peaceful market into a hunting ground.

I stood on the edge of the limestone patio, clutching the leather portfolio as fifty pairs of judgmental eyes watched my every move. But the moment I handed the sketches to Corina, she retracted her hand, letting the portfolio sink into the chlorine before throwing herself into the pool with a theatrical scream. My fiancé, Julian, didn't hesitate; he shoved me aside with enough force to twist my ankle and dove in to rescue her. He surfaced with Corina in his arms, looking at me with a mask of pure disgust while the crowd whispered that I was an unstable, illegitimate intruder. My stepmother Eugenia didn't even ask for an explanation before she stepped forward and slapped me across the face, ordering me to get out before she called the police. "Sister, if you're still mad about the inheritance, just say it. Why did you push me?" "Enough! God, Aria. Your jealousy is actually sickening." I stood on shaking legs, looking at the man who had promised to know my heart for two years, only to realize he was just another wolf in the pack. The humiliation burned hotter than the sting on my face, and I realized that in their eyes, I would always be the trash they needed to take out. I yanked the diamond ring off my finger, slammed it onto a table, and walked away from my old life forever. To claim my trust fund and survive, I walked into a dive bar and offered a marriage contract to a broke, mysterious artist named Harland. I thought I was just buying a temporary shield, but I didn't realize that my "poor" new husband was actually a billionaire predator who was already planning to burn my family's empire to the ground.
