My Alpha Ignored Our Dying Son for His Mistress Chapter 1

One week. That's how long it had been since we buried Tru in the small clearing behind the pack house, where the healer said the soil was soft enough for a coffin no bigger than a shoebox. One week since I'd stopped waiting for my body to remember it wasn't supposed to be empty anymore.

I told myself work would help. As Luna of the Silverfang Pack, I still had a banquet to plan, so I went into Samson's study that afternoon looking for the guest ledger from last year. My mate—Alpha Samson, the man I'd bled for on an operating table three weeks before Tru was born—kept everything filed with obsessive precision. Except one drawer. The bottom cabinet by the window sat open half an inch, the lock not quite caught.

I almost let it go. Almost.

Instead I knelt and pulled it open, and my hand found a manila folder thick enough to need a rubber band. Pediatric records. Vaccination charts. Three birth certificates, each one listing Samson as father. The mother's name was the same on all three: Paris Laurent.

I didn't cry. I want that on record, even if only I ever know it—I didn't cry. I photographed every page with hands that didn't shake nearly as much as they should have, then I replaced the folder exactly as I'd found it, drawer angled the same half inch, and I walked out of that study with my spine straight and my chin level, the way ten years of Luna training had taught me to walk through fire.

Inside me, Sera howled. My wolf has been quiet since Tru died, curled somewhere I couldn't reach her. But she howled then, and it was the worst sound I have ever heard, because it was mine.

The clinic address was on the letterhead. Silverfang Maternity, a private facility the pack funded in a leafy corner of suburban New York, the kind of place with valet parking and a lobby that smelled like eucalyptus. I drove there alone, telling no one, and I gave my name at the desk like I had every right to be there. I did. I was Luna.

A nurse walked me to a private suite before I could think better of it. The door was cracked. Flowers everywhere—white peonies, dozens of them—and a card propped against the vase in handwriting I would know if I were blind: *Almost there. I'm proud of you. —S.*

Paris was in the bed, one hand resting on a belly that was unmistakably, visibly pregnant again. She saw me and her mouth opened, but before she could speak, a woman in scrubs bustled in behind me, clipboard in hand, warm and brisk.

"Luna Shay," she said. "I'm so glad you came—Alpha Samson said you'd want to know how she's doing after last time, given everything with the mind-link that night."

I went very still. "Which night."

The healer—Elena, her badge read, Elena Voss—didn't catch the edge in my voice. She kept talking, the way people do when they think you already hold every piece of the puzzle they're handing you. "The false labor. When your Alpha blocked his link to focus on her, he called us directly, had someone here within the hour. I just meant—it's a relief nothing was actually wrong that time. Considering."

*That time.* Considering.

I heard the date fall out of her mouth like it weighed nothing, and it was the same night. The same night I had screamed down every channel I owned—mind-link, emergency howls, three frantic calls—while my son's small body went cold in my arms and no one came. Samson hadn't been unreachable. He'd made himself unreachable. He'd sat in this room, or one like it, holding Paris's hand through a labor that turned out to be nothing, while three miles away his own pup was dying and his mate was howling his name into a silence he'd built on purpose.

I don't remember leaving the suite. I remember the parking lot, the cold bite of the railing under my palm, my knees giving out before I caught myself. Sera didn't howl that time. She just broke, low and endless, a sound with no bottom to it.

I drove back to the pack house that night in complete control of my face.

Over the following days I watched. I watched how easily Samson excused his absences—council business, a supplier meeting, always something. I watched how Paris positioned herself at the edges of every pack gathering, one respectful step behind him, deferential enough that no one looked twice. I watched a life I hadn't known existed slot itself around mine with terrifying precision.

At the banquet—my banquet, the one I had planned with my own hands two weeks before I buried my son—Samson stood and raised his glass to toast "the sacred bonds that hold this pack together." Across the room, Paris rested one hand against her belly and looked at him, just for a second, in a way that wasn't accidental.

I raised my glass with everyone else. I held my Luna smile.

And somewhere beneath the silk and the composure, something in me finished breaking, and in its place, something harder began to grow.
