Chapter 4

Damir called me to his study late the following afternoon.

He didn’t send a runner or ring my phone. He just pulled on the thin, battered bond-thread between us, a sharp yank that vibrated against the back of my teeth.

When I walked in, he wasn’t sitting behind his mahogany desk. He stood by the arched window, his jacket off, sleeves rolled to his forearms. Outside, the autumn mist was gathering over the Ironveil training grounds, gray and heavy.

I stopped three paces into the room and folded my hands loosely in front of me. "You wanted to see me, Alpha?"

He turned slowly. His dark eyes narrowed, sweeping over me from my flat boots to my pulled-back hair. There was an edge to his stance—not the casual arrogance he usually wore, but something tighter. A predator sniffing the wind and catching an unfamiliar trace.

"You've been quiet, Zoe," he said. His voice was low, rasping like rough leather.

"I have work to finish," I replied evenly. "The winter rations manifest is on your desk."

"I'm not talking about the rations." He took two slow steps toward me. "You didn't argue when I assigned you to scullery duty yesterday. You didn't complain about Skye's schedule. You just stood by the door at the trade summit like a ghost."

"I did what you asked."

"That's the problem." He tilted his head, his jaw hardening. "You're too quiet. You're doing every single thing you're told, exactly to the second. What are you playing at?"

He couldn't name what bothered him, because naming it would mean admitting that my obedience had always been a gift, not a chain. He had spent years mistaking my patience for helplessness. Now that my compliance had turned cold and hollow, he felt the draft, even if he didn't know which window was open.

"I'm not playing at anything," I said softly.

Damir scowled. He didn't want explanations; he wanted the usual reassurance. He wanted me to look down, to bite my lip, to give him the small, submissive flinch that proved his power was still absolute.

Without warning, he pushed his Alpha tone through our bond.

It wasn't a direct command to drop. It was a pressure test—a heavy, suffocating wave of dominance meant to rattle my bones and force my chin toward my chest. The air in the room thinned instantly. A dull, throbbing ache hit my temples.

In the past, my neck would have bent automatically. My shoulders would have curled in, bracing against the force of a man I once believed would protect me.

This time, I didn't move.

I stood completely still on the hardwood floor. My spine stayed straight. And instead of dropping my gaze to his polished leather shoes, I looked straight into his eyes.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Damir’s breath hitched in his throat. For three agonizing beats, the Alpha of Ironveil could not hold my stare. His pupils flared, a flicker of raw, instinctive uncertainty flashing behind his irises before he blinked and jerked his head away toward the desk.

He covered it fast, curling his upper lip into an ugly sneer.

"Look at you," he muttered, venom dripping from every syllable. "A wolfless stray puffing out her chest, pretending she matters. You think staring me down changes what you are?"

"No," I said.

"Get out of my office," he snapped, turning his back on me and shuffling a stack of papers he wasn't reading. "You make me sick just looking at you."

"Yes, Alpha."

I stepped back through the double doors and pulled them shut until the latch clicked into place. The hallway was cold and quiet. I stood on the runner rug for a moment, listening to the muffled scrape of Damir’s chair on the other side of the oak.

I knew, with absolute certainty, that I would never stand in that room again.

Down in the basement, the hum of the boiler room was steady and low.

I locked my deadbolt and went straight to the small pine dresser tucked beneath the water pipe. In the bottom drawer, hidden under a stack of worn winter sweaters, lay a flat wooden box lined in faded blue velvet.

I lifted the lid.

Resting in the center was a silver-and-moonstone brooch. It was the only object I possessed from the family I never knew, placed in my hands twenty-nine years ago by a guardian whose face was now just a blur of fading memories.

*“This carries the scent of who you truly are,”* he had whispered, his bloody fingers curling mine around the metal just before he stopped breathing. *“Never lose it, Zoe. Never let them see it.”*

I picked it up. The silver was cold against my scarred palm, wrought into intricate, flowing knots that cradled a pale, milky stone. I brought it to my nose and inhaled.

A faint, ancient fragrance escaped from the tiny seam where the stone met the metal. It wasn't floral, and it wasn't earth. It smelled like high mountain snow and raw ozone, something so vast and wild that every nerve in my skin prickled with heat. Deep beneath my ribs, the strange, sleeping pressure shifted again, answering the scent like an echo in a dark canyon.

I didn't put it back in the drawer.

I took a clean scrap of dark flannel, wrapped the brooch tightly, and slid it into the zippered interior pocket of my heavy jacket. I pressed my hand over my chest, feeling the hard metal resting against my ribs. A sudden, sharp urgency told me to keep it close. I didn't know where that instinct came from, but I didn't question it.

Sitting at my desk, I powered on the encrypted laptop.

The screen glowed faintly in the dim room. I navigated past three layers of security to the most critical contact in my guardian's network—the Lycan-channel elder broker who held the underlying endorsements for Ironveil’s eastern borders. For seven years, that anonymous seal had kept neighboring packs from swallowing Damir whole.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard for two seconds. Then I typed the coded phrase:

*Prepare for full withdrawal on my signal. Confirm receipt.*

I pressed enter.

I waited in the dark, watching the cursor blink against the black terminal window. Exactly four hours later, at eight minutes past ten, a single line appeared on the screen:

*Confirmed. Standing by.*

I stared at the green text for a long time. My hands rested flat and still on my lap.

There was no sudden rush of joy. No triumphant heat in my veins. There was only a quiet, settling weight—the strange, profound calm of someone who had finally stopped pretending the floor beneath her feet was real.

I shut the laptop, slid it into my satchel, and waited for the night to end.
