Chapter 5

The hallway outside my room smelled of spilt liquor and cedar smoke. The pack’s autumn mixer was winding down upstairs, but Skye was still wide awake.

She stood in the narrow corridor, leaning against the damp brick wall with a glass of dark red wolfsbane wine tilted in her hand. Her cheeks were flushed. Her glossy hair was loose over her shoulders.

Two young sentries from the night watch were walking down the hall, their boots thudding on the concrete. The second Skye saw them, her spine straightened. Her voice went up an octave, bright and theatrical.

"Still creeping around in the dark, Zoe?" she called out, loud enough to bounce off the pipes overhead.

I stopped three paces from my door. My hand stayed in my pocket.

"Look at her," Skye said, turning her smile toward the two boys. "Seven years sleeping in the basement. No wolf. No scent. Not even an Omega collar to make it official. Just pure charity."

The younger boy gave a nervous, uncomfortable chuckle. The other kept his eyes locked on the floor, picking up his pace to slip past.

Skye took a slow sip of her wine, watching me over the rim. "Damir keeps saying he keeps you around out of pity. He told me yesterday you're like an old coat he forgot to throw out. Just taking up space in the closet."

She waited for the flinch. She waited for the sting to show on my face.

I didn't give her anything. I didn't tighten my jaw, and I didn't look down. I just stood there until she ran out of words and the wine in her glass stopped swirling.

When the silence stretched thin, I stepped around her, unlocked my deadbolt, and pushed the door open.

"Goodnight, Skye," I said evenly.

I shut the door before she could answer and turned the lock.

The dark room swallowed the hallway light. I leaned back against the heavy wood, listening to the muffled scrape of her heels fading down the hall.

Inside my chest, the violent thrashing that had kept me awake for weeks had stopped. It wasn't gone. It had turned into something heavier—an eerie, bottomless stillness. It felt like the deep, held-breath quiet that falls over the woods right before lightning strikes a tree.

At four in the morning, the bond-thread flared.

It wasn't a command. It was sensory bleed, raw and unfiltered.

Through the battered link between our minds, Damir’s sharp pine scent flooded my senses, heavy with heat and sweat. Mingled thick into it was Skye’s amber perfume—sticky, musk-soaked, and unmistakable. Proximity. Skin on skin.

He didn't shield it. Damir never bothered to shield the link, because he had never once cared what it felt like to have another woman’s scent dragged across my nervous system.

I lay flat on my back in the dark. My eyes were wide open, staring at the gray outline of the ceiling.

I didn't cry. My chest didn't heave. Crying belonged to someone who still expected him to be a man.

I sat up, reached under the mattress, and pulled out the encrypted phone. My thumbs moved without shaking over the glowing glass.

*Advance timeline. Withdrawal in forty-eight hours pending final trigger.*

I tapped send. A single green checkmark flashed.

I slid the device back under the frame, pulled the thin blanket up to my chin, and stared into the dark until the dawn broke gray against the window grate.

At seven, I got out of bed to dress.

I reached for the hanger by the door where my heavy utility jacket usually hung—the jacket where I had tucked my guardian’s brooch the night before.

The hook was empty.

My stomach dropped into a cold, hollow pit.

I didn't run, but my strides were long and fast as I headed down the lower corridor toward the pack laundry. The room was thick with steam and the sour smell of detergent. Baskets of unwashed combat uniforms were piled high along the wall.

"Looking for something, Zoe?" an older Omega asked, pulling wet towels from an industrial dryer. "Dawn sweep grabbed everything from the lower racks."

"My jacket," I said, keeping my voice level. "Dark green."

"Third bin on the left. Hasn't gone in the wash yet."

I walked over and dug through the rough canvas coats until my fingers hit the heavy twill of my jacket. I shoved my hand deep into the interior zippered lining.

My knuckles brushed against the scrap of flannel.

I closed my eyes and let out a long, ragged exhale. The velvet case was still inside. Intact.

Without setting it down, I unzipped my canvas work vest—the thick, high-collared layer I wore under my sweater every single day. I pulled the brooch out of the flannel, slid it into the vest’s inner chest pocket, and zipped it tight over my ribs.

I patted the fabric. The hard curve of silver pressed right against my breastbone.

Whatever had been waking up inside me was pounding a silent, frantic beat against the metal, demanding that I keep it close. I wasn't taking that vest off again.

***

That afternoon, I stood in my room, checking the latches on my satchel.

The door didn't rattle. It swung open hard, hitting the plaster wall with a loud crack.

Skye stood in the doorway. She was still wearing the silk blouse from breakfast, but her hair was messy and her eyes were glassy, rimmed with red. She held half a glass of dark wine, swaying slightly on her heels.

She had been watching me all morning. She had seen me touching my chest by the laundry carts.

"You're acting strange today, Zoe," she murmured, closing the door behind her with a thud. She stepped into the narrow room, her gaze sweeping over my packed bag on the cot, then locking directly onto my hands.

I was standing at the dresser. In my palm, pulled from my vest just seconds before she shoved the door open, rested the silver-and-moonstone brooch.

Her eyes lit up with spite.

"Look at that," she said, her mouth twisting into a cruel sneer. "That's the ugly little piece your guardian left you, isn't it? The one you treat like holy water."

"Get out of my room, Skye."

"Or what?"

She crossed the floor faster than I expected, her wolf-blood giving her speed my human body couldn't match. Before my fingers could curl shut, her manicured hand darted out and wrenched the metal from my grip.

"Give it back," I said, my voice dropping low.

Skye held it up to the dim bulb, turning the milky stone between two fingers. She sneered, shaking her head with theatrical disgust.

"Cheap. Small. Worthless." She looked me dead in the eye, her smile widening into something jagged and vicious. "Just like you."

She raised her arm and hurled it down.

The brooch slammed against the exposed stone floor.

A sharp, violent *snap* cut through the air. The silver filigree twisted and split. The pale moonstone cracked clean down the center, breaking into two jagged halves.

Then the air tore open.

From the fractured core of the setting, a scent burst out—a scent sealed away for twenty-nine years. It wasn't floral. It wasn't herbs or sweet musk.

It was high mountain ozone, ancient snow, and the terrifying, iron-rich thunder of pure Lycan royal blood.

The fragrance hit my face like a physical wave. It flooded my nostrils, swept down my throat, and sank straight through my pores into my blood.

And deep beneath my ribs, behind the door that had been locked since the day I was born, something massive opened its eyes.
