Chapter 1

At 8:14 on a Saturday evening, Damir pulled out the high-backed velvet chair reserved for the Luna of Ironveil and seated Skye Butler instead.

Her manicured hand slid down the sleeve of his tailored suit, her amber perfume suffocating his cedar and smoke. Through the fragile bond-thread linking us, the sensation hit me like cold poison: his approval, sharp and deliberate, coating her scent until they blurred together.

I was standing forty feet away, shoved against the drafty kitchen doors where the Omegas cleared dirty plates.

An allied Luna from the northern border glanced my way, her lips parting in discomfort before she quickly looked down at her champagne glass. Seven years ago, Damir had been bleeding out in a rain-slicked Brooklyn alley, coughing up dark blood while I splinted his broken fingers with strips torn from my secondhand coat. Tonight, he was the Alpha of the East Coast’s most feared territory, and I was nobody.

I set my cloth on the serving tray and turned to slip into the back corridor.

*Sit.*

The Alpha command slammed through the thread like a lead weight dropped directly onto my spine. My knees buckled against the hard floor. The iron tray clattered, spilling silver forks across the tile. The chatter in the grand hall instantly died. An allied Beta turned his head away, staring fixedly at the wall.

Damir didn’t even look back at me. He just reached across the white linen tablecloth, his fingers lightly curling over Skye’s wrist, his posture unyielding.

My breath caught in my throat. The pain in my knees was sharp, but my hands, pressed flat against the floor, didn't shake. I pushed myself up into the wooden chair behind the serving station, my spine rigid. I didn't utter a single sound.

Half an hour later, the banquet hall emptied into the long gallery. I waited by the service exit to return to my basement room.

Heels clicked against marble.

Skye blocked the archway. Her lips curled into a lazy, feline smirk. Behind her, three pack sentries stood stationed near the stairs—close enough to watch every breath, far too conditioned to move a muscle.

"You really don't know when to disappear, do you?" Skye purred.

Before I could sidestep her, her fingers shifted. Thick, razor-sharp claws shot from her nail beds. In one swift, deliberate sweep, she dragged them across my open palm.

Flesh tore. Hot crimson welled up, dripping onto the gray wool of my skirt. She took two fingers, casually wiped my blood across my own collar, and smiled. "You should be more careful."

Heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Damir appeared, his jaw tight, his dark eyes scanning the blood on the floor. He didn't ask a question. He didn't even look at my hand.

"Causing scenes again, Zoe?" His voice was cold gravel.

"She cornered me, Damir," I said evenly.

"Enough." He stepped between us, his broad shoulders shutting me out completely. Then his gaze dropped to my collarbones. To the delicate silver chain I’d worn since childhood, holding a small moonstone given to me by the only guardian I'd ever known.

With a single, dismissive jerk of his fingers, he snapped the clasp.

"Damir, no—"

"A real Luna should wear it," he said, turning his back on me and fastening the cold silver around Skye's bare throat.

Skye stroked the pendant, her eyes bright with malice. The three sentries fixed their eyes firmly on the polished floor, pretending to be statues.

I looked down at my left wrist. Beneath my sleeve was a frayed, cheap leather cord Damir had tied around my arm in that Brooklyn alley seven years ago, promising he would make it right one day. I pinched the knot, snapped the dry leather in two, and tossed it into the brass trash bin beside the stairwell.

It landed with a dull, hollow thud.

Damir didn't even turn his head. He was leaning down, whispering something against Skye's ear as she laughed.

And then, deep behind my ribs, something shifted.

It wasn't a voice. It wasn't a pain I recognized. It was a violent, furious vibration—a heavy, ancient pulse like iron striking iron against a barred gate. My wolf, dormant and silent for twenty-nine years, groaned in the dark of my chest.

I clamped my wounded hand over my sternum, swallowing hard as the floor beneath me seemed to hum. It receded in seconds, leaving behind the taste of pure ozone on my tongue. I didn't understand it, but I memorized the sensation.

I went straight to my small room behind the furnace, turned the deadbolt, and flipped open my encrypted laptop.

I bypassed the decoy drives and brought up the anonymous accounts my guardian had left me—the exact channels that had secured Damir's eastern trade lines, the wolfsbane antidote stockpiles that kept his warriors alive, the private treaties signed with mountain elders who thought they were answering to a royal Ashford proxy.

Every single pillar holding up Ironveil didn't belong to Damir Morrison. It belonged to the ghost who ran these files.

To me.

I logged the audit, backed the encrypted keys onto a single cold-storage drive, and pocketed it. I didn't sever the connections yet. But the silence in the room no longer felt like a cage; it felt like a fuse.

At dawn, a blunt tug on the bond-thread jerked me awake.

*Office. Now.*

I walked up the carpeted stairs to his study. Damir was behind his mahogany desk, signing off on morning patrol logs, a mug of black coffee steaming beside him. He tossed a thick stack of invoices toward the edge.

"Supply trucks are delayed at the northern crossing," he said without looking up. "Audit the manifest and re-route them. Then check the boiler in the lower barracks. Skye said the water pressure was too low this morning."

I picked up the papers. "Anything else?"

"One more thing." He finally raised his eyes, flat and indifferent. "Skye will be sitting the East Coast Summit with me next month. You'll coordinate her travel arrangements and pack wardrobe."

I paused in the open doorway for one full second.

"Of course, Alpha," I said.

I pulled the heavy oak door shut behind me, the cold weight of the storage drive pressing reassuringly against my hip. Down the hall, Skye was already humming as she slipped into the master suite, Damir’s gold territory seal dangling carelessly from her fingers.
