Chapter 2

Over the next two weeks, I mapped the death of Ironveil Pack.

I didn’t rush. I didn't change my routine by a single second. I still brought Damir his morning logs, still ordered the low-grade fuel for the border patrol trucks, and still scheduled Skye’s appointments with the pack jewelers.

At night, sitting at the small wooden desk in my basement room, I opened a second notebook. In my cramped, even handwriting, I traced every invisible pillar I had built over seven years.

Page one: The southern border defense treaty, signed by mountain elders who only agreed because an anonymous Ashford seal stamped the parchment.

Page two: The synthetic wolfsbane antidotes delivered twice a month to Ironveil’s infirmary, funneled through a dead-drop apothecary in Philadelphia that answered only to my guardian’s old codes.

Page three: The fourteen frontline warriors whose monthly hazard pay secretly flowed from off-grid accounts Damir believed were anonymous business grants.

Damir thought Ironveil’s strength was his own. He believed his sharp jaw, heavy fists, and snarling Alpha aura had brought the East Coast to its knees. He had no idea he was standing on a glass floor I had laid down tile by tile.

I transcribed every coordinate, account key, and contact protocol into a tiny, encrypted secondary drive hidden beneath the floorboard under my bed. I didn't pull a single thread yet. When a structure falls, you don't chip away at the mortar. You pull the foundation all at once.

The Regional Alpha Summit was held at a private resort in the Adirondacks. It was an intimate gathering of six neighboring packs, meant to settle hunting boundaries before winter.

For the third consecutive time, Damir seated Skye in the velvet Luna chair.

She wore emerald silk, her neck bare except for the silver chain and moonstone pendant he had ripped from my collar two weeks ago. When allied leaders toasted Ironveil’s expansion, she smiled, sipping vintage wine and resting her manicured hand over Damir’s broad knuckles.

I stood forty paces away near the kitchen doors, a clipboard tucked against my ribs, ensuring the catering staff kept the meat rare and the scotch flowing.

"You're not eating."

The voice was low, rasping like dried leaves. I turned to find Alpha Harlan Gress standing beside the service station.

He was an older wolf, his muzzle frosted with gray, his shoulders thick as an oak trunk. He ruled the territory directly south of Ironveil. Unlike the younger Alphas who strutted around Damir trying to mimic his cruelty, Harlan had survived three border wars by keeping his eyes open and his mouth shut.

"I eat after the guests, Alpha Gress," I said politely, keeping my chin low. "Can I get you another drink?"

He didn't look at the bar. His pale, intelligent eyes were fixed on my face.

"Tell me something, child," he said softly. "Are you Morrison’s mate?"

My fingers tightened around the edge of the clipboard. "I'm his logistics coordinator."

"That wasn't what I asked." Harlan tilted his head, drawing in a slow, deep breath. His silver brows knit together. *"I ask because I can smell something on you that doesn't match your position. Faint. But it's there."*

A cold jolt went through my stomach. Before I could form a careful lie, an iron vice slammed into the center of my skull.

*Come here. Now.*

Damir’s Alpha tone tore through our fragile bond-thread like an electric shock. The biological compulsion was immediate and absolute. My legs locked, my pivot executed before my brain could stop it. The clipboard nearly slipped from my grip as my body forced itself to obey, pulling me away from the old wolf.

I walked stiffly across the dining room floor toward the head table.

Behind me, I felt Harlan’s gaze burning into my back—narrowed, sharp, and intensely calculating.

At midnight, the heavy deadbolt on my door clicked open.

Damir didn't knock. He stepped into my small room, reeking of bourbon, expensive cigars, and Skye’s amber perfume. He shut the door behind him with a quiet, dangerous click.

He didn't raise his fists. Damir rarely bothered to get his hands dirty when a bond-thread made cruelty so effortless.

He just looked at me, his dark eyes cold, and pushed.

It wasn't a physical blow. It was a suffocating, concentrated wave of raw Alpha dominance channeled straight down the mental link between us. The air vanished from my lungs. A leaden, crushing weight dropped onto my shoulders, forcing my spine downward.

My knees trembled. The floor rushed up to meet me.

My palms hit the cold linoleum, scraping against the rough floor as my body buckled entirely under his will. I couldn't lift my head. The pressure made my teeth ache.

"You like chatting with neighboring Alphas, Zoe?" His voice was smooth, quiet, and venomous. "You think because you carry papers, you have a voice in my territory?"

"I was... answering his drink order," I choked out, my forehead inches from the floorboards.

"You have no authority to speak for Ironveil," Damir said, taking a slow step closer until the polished leather of his shoes filled my vision. "You are not Luna. You are nothing. A stray I let sleep in the basement out of pity."

He pressed down harder through the thread. A sharp whimper threatened to escape my throat, but I bit my lip until I tasted copper, refusing to give it to him.

"If I ever catch you whispering to another Alpha again," he whispered, leaning down, "I will hand you over to Skye. And I promise you, she won't be as gentle as I am."

The crushing weight suddenly vanished as he severed the mental push.

The door opened and closed. His heavy footsteps faded up the stairs.

I stayed on the floor for a long time, my hands shaking against the dust, gasping for air that felt thin and sour.

Then, deep beneath my ribs, the iron gate rattled again.

It hit harder this time—a violent, soundless roar that rattled my very bones. The heat of it scorched my lungs from the inside out, demanding blood, demanding breath, thrashing against whatever wall had kept it asleep for twenty-nine years.

I clutched my chest, curling inward, terrified not of Damir, but of what was waking up inside me.

I still didn't know it was a wolf.

I only knew that whatever was living under my skin was growing too large for this room, and I was running out of space to hold it back.
