Chapter 4

Sylvia arrived at my quarters two hours after dawn.

I heard her footsteps in the corridor first — measured, unhurried, the kind of walk that announced authority without needing to rush. Then the knock. Three times, evenly spaced. Polite. Almost warm.

I opened the door.

She stood flanked by two Silverfang elders I recognized by face but not by name. Both were older wolves, their hair silver, their expressions carefully neutral. Sylvia herself looked composed. Her hair was pinned back, her dress a deep forest green that marked her as pack matriarch. She smiled at me.

"Chelsea," she said. Her voice carried the warmth of someone greeting a daughter. "May we come in."

I stepped aside.

They entered in a line. Sylvia took the chair by the window without asking. The two elders remained standing near the door, their hands folded in front of them like sentries. I sat across from her, my back straight, my hands resting on my knees.

Sylvia studied me for a moment. Then she leaned forward slightly, her expression softening into something that might have looked like concern if I had not known better.

"I want you to know," she said, "that what happened was not a reflection of your value to this pack. Preston made a decision under extraordinary pressure. The eastern border has been unstable for months. Rogue raids. Territory disputes. He believed — we believed — that a strategic bond with Cassandra's bloodline would stabilize the region."

I said nothing.

She continued. "I know how it must have looked. I know how it must have felt. But Chelsea, you are still Luna. You have always been Luna. And we want to honor that."

One of the elders behind her cleared his throat. Sylvia glanced back at him, then turned to me again.

"We are prepared to offer you the eastern holdings," she said. "A full quarter of Silverfang territory. Your own land, your own authority. You would retain the title of Luna emeritus — a ceremonial position, yes, but one that carries weight. Respect. And we would issue a public statement clarifying that what occurred was a misunderstanding, resolved through your gracious leadership."

She paused. Her eyes searched my face.

"You would be taken care of," she said softly. "You would never want for anything. And the pack would move forward without the disruption of a tribunal. Without the damage that public conflict brings."

I looked at her. At the careful warmth in her expression. At the elders behind her, silent and waiting. At the offer laid out like a gift.

Then I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. Hard.

"No," I said.

Sylvia blinked. "Chelsea—"

"I am not interested in territory," I said. My voice was flat. Measured. "I am not interested in a ceremonial title. And I am not interested in the story Silverfang tells itself about how well it handled the worst thing it ever did."

The room went silent.

Sylvia's smile did not fade, but something behind her eyes shifted. "You are upset," she said. "Of course you are. But Chelsea, think about what you are refusing. Think about what a tribunal will do to this pack. To your reputation. To—"

"I have thought about it," I said. "My answer stands."

One of the elders stepped forward. His voice was low, careful. "Luna, the Council will not stay on territory forever. Once they leave, the pack will still be here. The wolves who serve you. The alliances you have built. A public conflict will fracture all of it."

I turned to look at him. "Then it will fracture."

Sylvia stood. The warmth in her expression was gone now, replaced by something harder. "You are making a mistake," she said quietly. "You are choosing pride over pragmatism. And when this is over, when the damage is done, you will have nothing."

I stood as well. We faced each other across the small room.

"I already have nothing," I said. "Your son made sure of that."

Sylvia's jaw tightened. For a moment I thought she might say something else. But she did not. She turned and walked to the door. The two elders followed.

At the threshold, she stopped and looked back at me.

"I hope you know what you are doing," she said.

Then she left.

The door closed behind them. I stood in the center of the room, alone, and listened to their footsteps fade down the corridor.

Then I sat down and poured myself another cup of chamomile tea.

My hands did not shake.

---

The next two days passed in a haze of phantom pain and preparation.

The bond was still active. I felt it every time Preston moved too close to Cassandra, every time their scents tangled. It came in waves — a sharp burn at my neck, nausea that rolled through me without warning, an exhaustion so deep it felt like my bones were filled with lead. My wolf could not help me. She was still dormant, still silent, and without her I had no way to metabolize the damage the bond was transmitting.

I drank chamomile tea until I could taste it in my sleep. I reviewed the witness testimony with Marcus until I could recite every sequence without looking at the notes. Garrett's patrol route. Mira's scent log. Nora's laundry schedule. The pillow. Always the pillow.

Marcus sat across from me in the sitting room, his face drawn, and watched me press my thumb into my wrist for the third time in an hour.

"You should rest," he said quietly.

"I will rest after the tribunal."

He did not argue. He just nodded and went back to the notes.

Late on the second night, there was a knock at my door.

I opened it to find a young wolf I did not recognize. He handed me a folded note and left without speaking.

The note was from Cassandra.

*Chelsea — I need to speak with you. Privately. Please. One sister to another.*

I stared at the words for a long time. Then I sent a reply.

*Common room. Tomorrow morning. Marcus will be present.*

---

She arrived exactly on time.

I was already seated when she entered, Marcus standing by the window behind me. Cassandra wore a simple dress, her hair loose, her face carefully composed. She looked at me and her eyes filled with tears.

"Chelsea," she said. Her voice broke on my name.

I said nothing.

She sat down across from me, her hands folded in her lap. "I know you are angry. I know you feel betrayed. But I need you to understand — this was never personal. I love you. You are my sister. You saved my life. I owe you everything."

I watched her. Waiting.

"Preston and I — it was not what you think. It was political. The eastern border is unstable. The pack needed an alliance. I agreed to the bond because it was necessary. Because it would protect Silverfang. Protect you."

She leaned forward, her voice urgent now. "You are strong enough to understand the difference between politics and betrayal. You always have been. And I need you to see that this was not about taking something from you. It was about doing what the pack required."

She stopped. Her hands were shaking. The tears on her face looked real.

I let the silence stretch.

Then I stood.

"I will see you at the tribunal," I said.

I walked out.

Marcus followed.

Behind me, I heard Cassandra call my name once. I did not turn around.

---

That night, I woke at two in the morning.

My wolf slammed against the inside of my chest so hard I gasped. The pain was immediate and total — not the phantom burn of the bond, but something deeper, older, angrier. My wolf was not mourning. She was furious.

She threw herself against the walls of my dormancy with a rage that had been building for years. I could feel her clawing, snarling, demanding to be let out. The marking pain spiked in my neck, sharp and white-hot, and I doubled over on the bed, shaking.

It lasted five minutes. Maybe ten. When it finally stopped, I was drenched in sweat, my breath coming in short gasps.

I sat on the edge of the bed until the shaking subsided. Then I got up, made chamomile tea, and sat at my desk.

I reviewed the witness order until dawn.

My wolf's fury had found its focus.

And so had I.
