Chapter 2

The cold crept into my bones until I couldn't feel my toes.

For three hours, I stumbled through waist-deep drifts, dragging my frozen body north. My left wrist throbbed with a dull, sickening ache. The silver rogue-brand Dalton had burned into my flesh was raw and blistered, weeping fluid against the torn silk of my wedding dress. But worse than the burn was the hollow in my chest.

There was no warmth inside me. No whisper. My wolf was completely silent, buried under months of Vanessa’s wolfsbane tea and the crushing blow of Bryce’s rejection.

If I stopped moving, I would freeze to death. Bryce knew that. It was why he had Dalton throw me out into a winter gale without a coat. A clean, deniable death.

*Keep walking,* I told myself. *Just one more ridge.*

Through the dense wall of pine trees, a dark shape emerged. A small timber cabin, buried beneath a heavy blanket of snow.

It was my grandfather’s retreat. Built on neutral ground beyond Ashveil’s borders, it was the only piece of land Bryce couldn't touch. My grandfather had tied it to an ironclad blood-trust filed directly with the Lycan Council decades ago. Bryce’s pack lawyers hadn't been able to pry it loose.

I tripped up the porch steps, my shoulder hitting the heavy cedar door. It was locked.

I pulled the iron key from beneath my bodice, my numb fingers trembling violently. It slid into the deadbolt with a stiff click. I threw my weight against the wood, and the door gave way with a groaning crack.

Inside, the air was dead and dry. I kicked the door shut and collapsed against it, panting into the dark.

I didn't light a fire. Smoke would draw Ashveil patrols. Instead, I crawled toward the corner of the stone fireplace. Behind a loose slab of slate near the hearth, the blood-vault sat flush against the foundation—a block of solid steel engraved with ancient runes.

There was no keyhole. Just a smooth indent shaped like a wolf's paw.

I didn't hesitate. I pressed my ruined left wrist—the raw, weeping brand—flat against the cold metal.

The blood from my wound smeared across the steel. For a second, nothing happened. Then, the runes flared with a deep crimson light. A heavy mechanical latch clicked, and the vault door swung open.

There were no stacks of cash. No gold.

Only a single manila envelope resting on the velvet lining. On the front, my grandfather’s neat, sharp handwriting read: *For Freya.*

I broke the wax seal with shaking hands and unfolded the thick parchment.

*My darling girl,* the letter began.

*If you are reading this, Bryce has done what I always knew his blood was capable of. His father murdered your parents to steal our land, and Bryce took you to steal the rest. Do not mourn the bond, Freya. The Moon Goddess gave you a mate, but Bryce chose greed over fate.*

My breath caught in my throat. Tears blurred the ink, but I forced myself to keep reading.

*He thinks he owns the Knight territories now. He does not. Every alliance pact and land deed he pressured me to sign carries a hidden Luna Accord kill-clause. The moment an Alpha rejects a true-born Knight mate, those deeds are rendered instantly void under Lycan Council law. The countdown has already begun.*

*Stand tall, little wolf. You are not what they told you. Your blood is older and higher than any Alpha in Ashveil. When you are ready, the deepest chamber will tell you the rest.*

*Survive. Make them kneel.*

I pressed the parchment against my sternum, right over my shattered bond. A strange, sharp heat prickled behind my ribs. My wolf didn't wake, but the crushing weight in my chest shifted.

I wasn't just an exiled rogue dying in a ditch. I was holding the match that could burn Bryce's empire to the ground.

A faint hum broke the silence.

On the desk across the room, an old emergency terminal—wired into Ashveil’s administrative network—flickered to life. A red light blinked on the console. It was broadcasting the pack’s private internal stream.

The Pack Banquet.

I walked over, wrapping an old wool blanket from the cot around my shivering shoulders, and stared at the screen.

The Grand Hall was ablaze with golden chandeliers. Ranked wolves raised crystal glasses, laughing and feasting. At the head table, Bryce stood tall in a tailored black suit, his chest puffed out with Alpha pride. Beside him sat Vanessa.

My stomach turned.

She was wearing my ceremonial Luna cloak—the heavy, silver-trimmed velvet that had belonged to my mother. She stroked the fur collar, smiling down at the crowd like a queen on a borrowed throne.

Bryce tapped his glass with a silver fork. The hall went quiet.

"Tonight," Bryce’s voice echoed through the small cabin speakers, smooth and triumphant, "we mark a new era for Ashveil. The old ways held us back. As of this evening, all Knight family territories have been formally consolidated under my direct command. The Knight line is retired. We move forward as one."

The room erupted in thunderous applause. Vanessa stood, raising her glass in a graceful toast. At the far end of the high table, my uncle Dalton sat rigid, staring down at his untouched wine. He didn't clap.

They looked so invincible. But looking at Bryce’s smug face, all I could think of was my grandfather’s letter.

Bryce had no idea the clock was ticking. Every second he smiled, the Luna Accord clauses were winding tight, waiting to snap his stolen titles in half.

Suddenly, the screen glitched. The banquet feed minimized, replaced by an urgent red banner: *PERIMETER BREACH – SECTOR 9.*

A harsh chime cut through the room, and an encrypted audio line patched through. It was Bryce’s private office channel.

"Speak," Bryce’s voice came through, stripped of all banquet warmth.

"Alpha," a scout reported, breathing hard. "The thermal sensors at the northern ridge tripped twenty minutes ago. A single human-form heat signature. It crossed the ravine and vanished past the border stones."

Silence hung over the line.

"She's alive," Bryce said. The calm was gone from his tone, replaced by an ugly, clipped edge. "She was supposed to freeze within two hours."

"Freya?" Vanessa’s voice chimed in. She sounded breathless, the sweet Luna mask slipping instantly. "Bryce, she’s wolfless. She has nothing. She's probably half-dead in a ditch."

"She is the last Knight," Bryce snapped, and for the first time, I heard a sliver of genuine panic in his Alpha voice. "The territory transfer documents filed an error code ten minutes ago at the registry. If she reaches a Lycan outpost and invokes her name, those deeds lock down."

A pause stretched across the static.

"Take five elite trackers, Vanessa," Bryce ordered coldly. "Find her before she gets within five miles of the Silvercrest border. Do not bring her back. Resolve the situation quietly."

"With pleasure," Vanessa replied.

The line went dead.

I stood in the dark cabin, the wool blanket clutched tight in my fist. Outside, the wind howled against the logs.

They were coming to finish the job.

I folded my grandfather’s letter, tucked it deep into my inner coat pocket against my heart, and turned toward the northern door.

I wasn't running to hide anymore. I was running to the border.
