Chapter 3

The fever hit before dawn.

I curled on the narrow cot in the cabin, shaking so hard my teeth rattled. My throat felt like I had swallowed broken glass. Sweat soaked my hair, sticking it to my forehead, while ice seemed to pump straight through my veins.

At first, I thought it was just the rejection killing me. The scar on my neck throbbed with a hollow, freezing pulse, aching where Bryce’s mark used to be. My thumb kept drifting back to touch the numb skin, over and over, trying to find a warmth that was gone for good.

Then came the retching.

I leaned over the side of the cot, heaving violently until dark, bitter bile splashed into an old tin bucket. The smell was unmistakable: sharp, metallic, and pungent.

Wolfsbane.

For twelve months, Vanessa had brought me tea every single morning. *“To help your nerves, Freya,”* she would purr in her sweet, practiced voice, handing me a porcelain cup before Bryce even came down to breakfast. It hadn't been chamomile. It had been slow, measured poison. With Bryce’s full knowledge, she had been systematically suffocating my wolf, making sure that when Bryce finally dropped the hammer, I wouldn't have the strength to fight back.

Now that the daily doses had stopped, my body was purging the toxin. It took two days of hell. I dragged myself between the cot and the fireplace, drinking melted snow from an iron kettle, enduring the tremors that tore through my ribs.

By the second evening, the fever broke.

I stood by the window, breathing in the dry cabin air. Something inside me had shifted. My hearing was sharper—I could hear the creak of pine branches two hundred yards away under the weight of the snow. My nose caught the subtle musk of an owl perched high in a birch tree.

It wasn't my old wolf. My old wolf had been gentle, a small gray creature that lived to please. This feeling was different. It sat heavy and deep beneath my sternum, like a dormant beast shifting under miles of winter ice. I couldn't name it. But it was there, watching.

I pulled my grandfather’s letter from my pocket and smoothed the creases on the pine desk. I had read it so many times the words were etched into my eyelids.

Beside it, I spread out a faded topographic map of the northern territory.

For three years, I had balanced Bryce’s books. I had filed his alliance treaties, organized his ledgers, and handled the paperwork Dalton was too lazy to finish. I remembered every seal on the Knight land deeds. Bryce had used our fated mate bond as legal collateral to fold my family's vast estates into the Ashveil pack registry.

*“Every pact carries a hidden Luna Accord kill-clause,”* my grandfather had written.

The legal trap became brilliantly clear. The Accord dictated that any territory transferred through a mate claim reverted instantly to the original bloodline if the Alpha formally rejected the true-born Luna. By speaking those rejection vows in the Grand Hall, Bryce hadn't conquered the Knight lineage.

He had signed away his own right to rule it.

Legally, those mountains, forests, and mines were no longer his. But a rogue had no voice under pack law. If I walked into Ashveil to file an injunction, Bryce’s enforcers would butcher me at the border and bury the paperwork.

To bring down the hammer, I had to reach the Silvercrest Court. Only the Lycan Council had the supreme jurisdiction to enforce the Accord and override an Alpha.

I traced my finger along the map. Thirty-five miles northeast across Razor Ridge. Thirty-five miles of frozen, lawless neutral zone where rogues were hunted for sport.

I didn't waste another hour. I raided the cabin's emergency caches, pulling on a pair of thick wool pants, sturdy leather boots, and a heavy shearling coat my grandfather had left behind. I packed dried venison, matches, and a hunting knife into a small rucksack. I pressed the letter against my chest, zipped my coat tight, and stepped out into the biting wind.

I moved only at night.

During the day, I wedged myself into rocky hollows and snow drifts, covering my tracks with fresh powder. My body was still battered. The silver rogue-brand on my left wrist throbbed with a raw, ugly heat every time my pulse spiked. But that strange, foreign pressure behind my ribs grew louder.

It was acting like an internal compass. When I neared a hidden crevasse or the scent of a rogue bear, the pressure flared hot, warning me away before my eyes caught the danger. When the path was clear, it settled into a low, steady hum.

On the third night, the wind carried a scent that made my blood run cold.

Jasmine. And honey.

I dropped flat behind a granite boulder, sinking into the snow.

Two miles back, parallel to my trail, five wolves moved through the tree line in tight formation. Vanessa was hunting in human form, wrapped in my mother's fur-trimmed cloak, flanked by four of Ashveil’s most vicious Delta trackers in full wolf shift.

A sharp, baying howl cut through the frozen night. They had caught my scent on the wind.

They were closing the angle, trying to cut me off before I reached the gorge.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I scrambled to my feet, abandoning caution, and sprinted down the icy slope toward the frozen riverbed ahead. Every breath burned like fire in my lungs.

Through the trees, just past the next ridge, I caught the distant gleam of high silver boundary posts—the Silvercrest border.

Safety was less than a mile away.

Behind me, the snap of breaking branches and the heavy thud of paws in the snow came faster, louder, relentlessly closing the gap.
