Chapter 3

Mara found me at seven in the morning, before the pack house had fully woken.

I was in the corridor outside the care wing, arms full of Paula's clean linens, when she stepped out of the shadow near the supply closet. She was a small woman, Mara — quiet in the way healers learn to be quiet, moving through rooms without disturbing them. She had never once spoken to me about anything beyond Paula's medication schedule.

She held out a small glass vial. The liquid inside was pale amber, almost pretty.

"Wolfsbane compound," she said. "Extracted from your tea supply. I've been testing it for three weeks."

I looked at the vial. I looked at her face. She did not apologize. She did not explain why it had taken her six years to look closely enough to test. Maybe she understood that an apology would require me to receive it, and I was not in a place where I could afford to receive anything that wasn't evidence.

"I'll testify," she said. "Before any tribunal that asks."

I shifted the linens to one arm and took the vial with my free hand. I slipped it into the pocket of my dress, beside the moonstone pendant.

"Thank you," I said.

She nodded once and walked away. I stood in the corridor for a moment, listening to the pack house settle around me — the distant clatter of the kitchen, the creak of the upper floor, Paula murmuring something to no one — and then I finished carrying the linens to the cedar chest and went to compile the rest of what I had.

The archive sat on the kitchen table by the time I was done. The contaminated tea tin wrapped in cloth. Mara's vial. The financial records I had pulled from the household ledger — the line items for custom silver jewelry, for designer pelts, dated in the same months Jayson had told me we couldn't replace Ava's torn training gear. The moonstone fang pendant in its small velvet cloth.

I looked at it all for a long moment. Then I braided Ava's hair, walked her to school, and came home to wait.

---

By six o'clock the main hall was already filling.

I heard them from the care wing — the low rumble of ranked wolves assembling, the scrape of chairs, the particular quality of silence that a crowd makes when it is watching for something. I helped Paula into her chair by the window and told her I would be back. She asked if it was Sunday. I told her not yet.

Elise was already seated when I walked in.

She had taken the Luna's guest position to Jayson's left — the chair that had no official name, because I had never officially held the rank that would have named it. Max sat beside her in formal pack colors, his dark hair combed flat the same way it had been at the solstice banquet. He looked bored. Comfortable. A child who had never once been told he was sitting in the wrong chair.

Jayson sat in the Alpha's seat with his hands resting loose on the armrests. He looked at me when I entered. His face was composed, neutral, the face of a man who had already decided how this meeting would end.

I walked to the center of the floor and stopped.

Three hundred wolves. Every rank. The candlelight the same as it had been at the banquet, the same silver plates still stacked in the sideboard, the same smell of cedar and old stone. My worn gray dress. My absent scent. I felt the room take me in — the collective, practiced contempt of a pack that had spent six years confirming its verdict about me — and I let it settle without flinching.

Ava's hand found mine. I had not heard her come in behind me. I did not look down. I just held on.

"Jayson."

My voice was level. Not loud. I did not need it to be loud.

"I have some things to put before this pack."

I crouched and set the contaminated tea tin on the floor. Then Mara's vial beside it. I stood back up.

"Wolfsbane. In my tea supply. Six years of it, according to the healer who tested it. Six years of deliberate chemical suppression of my wolf, my scent, and my biological function." I looked at him. "Your healer will testify to this before any tribunal."

Not a sound from the assembled wolves. Not one.

I laid the financial records flat on the floor beside the tin. "Custom silver jewelry. Designer pelts. Purchased in the same months you told me we could not afford to replace our daughter's torn training gear." I let that sit for a breath. "The dates are in the ledger. The ledger is in the Beta's file."

I reached into my pocket and set the moonstone fang pendant on the floor last. The candlelight caught it. Every eye in the hall dropped to it.

"The heirloom passed only to firstborn heirs of Ironveil," I said. "Which Paula placed in Max's hands at the solstice banquet. Not by accident. By instinct. A former Luna's instinct."

I straightened. I looked at Jayson across the length of the hall — at the composed face, the loose hands, the Alpha who had calculated every angle of this and believed he had already won.

"I'd like you to explain," I said. "To your pack. All of it."
