Chapter 4

The hall held its silence for three full seconds.

I counted them without meaning to — an old habit, the same reflex that made me count Paula's breaths in the night, count the seconds before a pup's tantrum peaked. One. Two. Three.

Then Jayson rose.

He did it slowly, the way he did everything that mattered, letting the chair scrape back at its own unhurried pace. His hands stayed loose at his sides. His face had not changed — still composed, still neutral, still wearing the expression of a man reviewing a minor administrative error before correcting it.

"Luciana." He said my name the way he might read a line item off a ledger. "Six years, and you still don't understand how this works."

I felt it before I heard it — the register underneath his voice dropping, thickening, the air itself seeming to gain weight. The Alpha tone. I had felt it directed at warriors, at unruly pups, at rival wolves at the border. I had never once, in six years, felt it aimed at me.

It hit the room like a hand pressing down on three hundred necks at once.

Around me, wolves buckled. Chairs scraped as ranked warriors dropped half a step into submission postures they didn't choose, shoulders rounding, chins lowering. Corwin, at the edge of the hall, went down on one knee before he seemed to realize he'd moved. Even Mara, near the back, swayed.

Ava's hand tightened in mine. She didn't drop. Six years old and she didn't drop, and something about that broke a little further open in my chest.

"She is a wolfless omega," Jayson said, and his voice carried to every corner of the hall without rising in volume at all. "No scent. No wolf. No rank. She was never my true mate — a confused, clinging she-wolf I tolerated out of pity, because she had nowhere else to go and no pack to claim her." He gestured, almost gentle, at the tin and the vial and the pendant still sitting on the floor between us. "This evidence is the fabrication of a jealous, delusional woman who cannot accept that Elise is my rightful Luna."

I heard Elise, somewhere behind him, exhale — a small, satisfied sound, like a held breath finally released.

"She reeks of nothing," Jayson said. "She has always reeked of nothing. That is not poison. That is proof."

He nodded once, toward the warriors along the wall.

"Remove her and the child. They leave with what they're wearing. Nothing else."

For a moment nobody moved, the Alpha tone and the horror of the command wrestling in every wolf's chest at once. Then boots. Then hands.

A hand closed over my upper arm — Delta-ranked, I registered distantly, a wolf named Reeve who had eaten at my table a dozen times, who had let me stitch his shirt sleeve last winter without a word of thanks. He wouldn't look at my face.

More hands reached for Ava behind me.

She screamed.

It wasn't a child's tantrum scream. It was raw, splitting, a sound that scraped the inside of my skull, and every cell in my body turned toward it before my mind had finished processing the word *no*.

No one in that hall moved to help. The Alpha tone held them down like a hand on the back of the neck, and I understood, in the terrible clarity of that second, that not one ranked wolf in the room — not Corwin, not Mara, not the warriors who had shared my table — would lift a finger against it. Six years of silence had trained them exactly as well as it had trained me.

The weight came down on my chest all at once. Not Jayson's aura — something older, something that had been building under six years of wolfsbane and rejection and Elise's soft cruel voice in Paula's doorway and Ava sobbing in a corridor, *is it true, Mama, are we going to be sent away* — six years of a question I had never been allowed to answer honestly, pressing down like a stone lowered onto my sternum one brick at a time, every single day, until this moment stacked the last one on top.

Something cracked.

Not a metaphor. I felt it — a heat tearing loose behind my ribs, igniting through every vein like a match dropped into dry grass, spreading too fast to name. The ceiling that had sat over my wolf for six years, the chemical lid Jayson had poured into my tea every single morning, did not lift.

It shattered.

My vision went silver at the edges. Reeve's hand on my arm suddenly felt like nothing, a leaf against a wall, and I heard him gasp and stumble back before I understood I had moved at all.

The hall was still ringing with Ava's scream and Jayson's unbroken, administrative voice when my eyes flashed silver — bright, unmistakable, a color that had no business existing in a wolfless omega's face — and for the first time in six years, the thing inside my chest that had sat quiet as furniture opened its eyes.
