Chapter 3

The music swelled as guests drifted back inside the ballroom, leaving the terrace quieter than before. Ava followed the movement reluctantly, her mind still tangled in the strange tension that clung to the night.

The gala lights shimmered across crystal chandeliers, casting warm gold across polished floors. Normally, this was her element. Conversation, business, charm. Control.

Tonight, she felt anything but in control.

She reached for a glass of champagne from a passing tray, mostly to steady her hands. The faint tremble annoyed her. She wasn't easily shaken. Her life had taught her how to maintain composure no matter the situation.

Yet Adrian Blackwood unsettled her in ways she didn't understand.

As if summoned by the thought, his reflection appeared beside hers in the mirrored wall across the ballroom.

"You left the terrace quickly," he said, his voice smooth and calm.

Ava turned, forcing her expression into polite neutrality. "The air inside is warmer."

"Is that the only reason?" he asked.

His gaze held hers longer than comfort allowed. There was something searching in it, something almost predatory beneath the polished billionaire exterior.

"I don't like being watched," she replied carefully.

A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Then tonight must be difficult for you."

Her stomach tightened. "What does that mean?"

Instead of answering, Adrian glanced across the ballroom toward a cluster of guests near the exit corridor. His expression hardened for a split second before smoothing again.

"Crowds hide many things," he said quietly. "Secrets. Intentions. Danger."

Ava followed his gaze but saw only guests laughing, clinking glasses, enjoying another flawless high-society evening.

Still, the uneasy feeling returned.

"Do you always speak in riddles?" she asked.

"Only when the truth would sound unbelievable."

The honesty in his tone surprised her. Before she could respond, a server brushed past them too quickly, nearly knocking into Ava. She stepped back, catching herself against Adrian's arm. The contact sent warmth racing through her chest, sharp and unexpected.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Adrian's jaw tightened slightly as he looked toward the corridor again.

"Stay near the main hall," he said suddenly.

Ava blinked. "You're giving me instructions now?"

"I'm giving you advice."

His tone had changed. Firmer. Protective. It stirred equal parts irritation and curiosity inside her.

"And if I don't follow it?" she challenged.

His gaze softened, but the intensity remained. "Then I might have to find you again."

The words lingered between them, charged with something deeper than warning. Ava felt heat rise to her cheeks and immediately hated the reaction.

Before she could reply, a faint crash echoed from somewhere beyond the ballroom. It was subtle. Glass, maybe. Most guests didn't notice, their laughter drowning it out.

Adrian noticed.

His posture shifted almost imperceptibly, alert, focused. Ava followed his gaze as two staff members hurried toward the corridor, whispering urgently.

"That sounded like an accident," she said, though she wasn't convinced.

"Perhaps," Adrian replied.

But he didn't look convinced either.

A sudden chill slid down Ava's spine. The same prickling awareness from the terrace returned stronger this time, like unseen eyes settling on her shoulders.

She turned slowly toward the corridor.

For a split second, she thought she saw someone standing just beyond the doorway. Tall. Still. Watching.

Then the figure stepped backward into darkness.

Her breath caught.

"Did you see that?" she whispered.

Adrian's attention snapped toward her immediately. "See what?"

"Someone was there."

He studied the corridor, his expression sharpening, calculating. The music inside the ballroom swelled again, cheerful and oblivious, but the tension between them tightened.

"Stay here," he said quietly.

He stepped toward the corridor before she could protest. Ava watched him disappear briefly into the dim hallway, swallowed by shadow and silence.

Seconds stretched unbearably long.

When Adrian returned, his expression was carefully composed again, but something in his eyes had darkened.

"There's nothing there," he said.

Ava searched his face. He was lying. Not openly. Not obviously. But something about his tone felt rehearsed.

"Are you sure?" she asked.

"Yes."

The single word carried finality, but not reassurance.

Across the ballroom, guests continued dancing, unaware that the air had shifted, grown heavier, charged with something unseen.

Adrian stepped closer again, lowering his voice.

"You should leave soon."

The suggestion surprised her. "Why?"

He hesitated, as if choosing words carefully. "Because tonight is becoming... unpredictable."

Ava studied him, weighing instinct against curiosity. Every sensible part of her told her to walk away, to return to safety, to forget the strange pull of the night.

Instead, she found herself asking, "Will you be here if I stay?"

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across Adrian's expression.

"Yes," he said quietly.

But something in his voice made her wonder whether that promise was meant to comfort her... or warn her.

Across the room, the corridor lights flickered once.

Then again.

And Ava realized with a sinking certainty that whatever had been watching her earlier had not left the building.

It was waiting.
