Chapter 4

The city streets were quieter than Ava expected as she stepped out of the gala entrance, the night air cool against her skin. Her heels clicked against the pavement, each step echoing in the near-empty street. She should have felt relief leaving the glittering hall, but instead, a tight knot of unease lingered in her stomach.

Her clutch was clutched so tightly her knuckles ached. Every shadow seemed to twist, stretch, and shift with a life of its own. She told herself she was imagining it - the adrenaline from the gala, the lingering thoughts of Adrian, the memory of that first wolf's howl.

Yet instinct whispered otherwise.

Halfway down the street, a soft, deliberate shuffle behind her made her pause. Her pulse spiked, and she whipped around. Empty street. Just the faint rustle of leaves in the breeze.

"Relax," she muttered to herself. "It's just... the night."

But a chill ran down her spine anyway.

A sudden flash of movement caught her eye. From the shadowed alley beside a boutique, a figure stepped forward - tall, cloaked, and still, like a predator sizing up its prey. Ava's heart slammed against her ribs.

Before she could react, a familiar voice called from the other side of the street.

"Ava!"

She turned, relief flooding her for the briefest moment. Adrian was striding toward her, coat collar raised against the night air. His presence was magnetic, grounding, but also dangerous - like the eye of a storm.

"You shouldn't be walking alone," he said, his voice low, carrying an edge of warning she couldn't ignore.

"I... I thought I could handle it," she admitted, shaking slightly.

Adrian studied her for a heartbeat, his dark eyes flicking to the shadowed alley behind her. Then, without warning, he took her hand, guiding her behind him. The touch was firm, protective, and electric. Ava felt heat surge through her chest despite the cold.

"Who is that?" she asked, nodding toward the alley.

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he scanned the street, every movement precise, every muscle tense. Finally, he spoke.

"Someone who shouldn't be here," he said, the words calm but with a warning in his tone. "Someone looking for you."

Ava's stomach twisted. "Looking for me? Why?"

He didn't answer directly. His eyes met hers, sharp and unreadable. "Not all questions are safe to ask... yet."

Another rustle came from the alley, closer this time. Ava stepped back instinctively.

Adrian's hand tightened around hers. "Stay close."

The figure moved again, this time more boldly. The streetlights caught a glint of something metallic in their hand - too quick to identify, too deliberate to be accidental.

Ava's breath caught. Her instincts screamed at her to run, but she couldn't move - trapped between fear and fascination, caught in Adrian's presence.

He glanced at her, his expression unreadable. "We need to move. Now."

With a surge of energy, he pulled her into a narrow side street, out of the alley's line of sight. The sounds of the city faded, replaced by an eerie silence. Only the soft click of their shoes on cobblestone echoed.

Ava swallowed hard, her heart still hammering. "Who was that?"

Adrian finally looked at her fully, his gaze intense. "Someone who wants answers... and you're holding them, whether you know it or not."

A gust of wind swept through the street, carrying with it a faint, wild scent - the same scent she'd noticed the night of the gala. Her pulse spiked again.

Adrian's hand brushed hers again, lingering. "Tonight was only the beginning. And you should know..." His voice dropped lower, almost a whisper meant only for her:

"The world you thought you understood doesn't exist anymore."

Ava's breath caught. Her heart was pounding, a mix of fear, curiosity, and... something else she couldn't name.

From the darkness behind them, a faint shadow shifted. Watching. Waiting.

And Ava realized with a chill she couldn't shake: the night had only just begun.
