Chapter 10

CHAPTER 10 - DANCING WITH THE PRINCE Moonlight spilled over the forest canopy as Lyria and Aiden followed the strange melody deeper into the woods. The air shimmered around them with faint silver motes, like drifting stars caught between breaths. The melody continued-beautiful, haunting, impossibly old. But as they stepped into a wide clearing, it vanished. In its place stood an ancient stone archway half-swallowed by vines, its surface carved with symbols Lyria somehow recognized even though she'd never seen them before. Wolf sigils. Crown sigils. Paths entwined. Aiden inhaled. "This... this looks like the old coronation runes." Lyria touched the stone. It hummed under her fingertips, warm and alive. "You walk the path of bound hearts." The whisper came from everywhere and nowhere. Aiden spun, drawing his sword, but Lyria held up a hand. "It's not a threat," she said quietly. "It's... a memory." A memory the forest wanted them to see. The ground beneath the archway was lit with soft silver lines that spiraled outward like a sigil. Then, as if the forest decided they'd seen enough, the light dimmed. Aiden exhaled shakily. "Why show us this? Is it a warning?" Lyria shook her head. "I don't think it wants to scare us. I think it wants to prepare us." He stared at her. "Whatever prophecy ties us together," he said softly, "it's already in motion." Lyria swallowed. "Aiden... what if this bond is dangerous?" "Then we face it together." The simplicity of his answer warmed something deep inside her... but before she could respond, the forest parted around them with a soft rustling. Lantern-like fungi lit a path leading away from the arch. Aiden offered his hand. "Shall we see where it leads?" Her wolf stirred with a quiet, instinctive yes. She nodded-and the two walked side by side into the glowing path. Arrival at Moonlight Lodge The glowing trail ended at a structure Lyria had never seen before: a carved wooden lodge nestled among silver-leafed trees. It wasn't grand like the palace Aiden often described. It was warm, quiet, and somehow sacred. Aiden frowned. "This shouldn't be here. This place is... ancient. Older than Neverland's founding." But the door swung open on its own, beckoning them inside. Warm candlelight met them. Chairs carved from living roots circled a low table. Walls shimmered faintly with old magic. The place smelled of Honeywood and crushed lavender. Aiden stepped forward slowly. "This looks like an old council hall... or a ritual chamber." Lyria walked to the center. Her flame pulsed warmly, responding to the magic in the floor. "What is this place?" she whispered. Aiden hesitated before answering. "Some call it the Moonlight Lodge. A sanctuary where ancient alliances were formed." Lyria turned. "Between who?" Aiden met her gaze. "Between wolves and kings." Her heart stuttered. Before she could process his words, bells chimed sharply outside-soft at first, then louder, echoing through the forest. Aiden's eyes widened. "Those aren't warning bells. They're calling bells." "For what?" Aiden swallowed. "For a gathering. For a milestone." "For us?" Lyria asked. He didn't answer. Because the doors of the lodge opened again, revealing figures standing outside. Forest spirits-translucent, glowing with soft blue light-drifted into the clearing. Their movements were slow and dignified, as though performing a ritual centuries old. "They're... celebrating," Aiden murmured. "But why?" One spirit moved closer, glowing a soft silver. Its voice echoed like distant water. "Tonight marks the Awakening of Two Paths." "The Wolf and the Crowned Heart." "Bound in light." Lyria's breath stalled. Aiden stepped closer, voice soft but steady. "Bound... how?" The spirit raised its translucent hand. The clearing lit with pale silver. And music-warm, melodic, inviting-began to fill the air. A slow, ancient rhythm. A dance. Lyria froze. "Aiden... I don't dance." He smiled softly. "Neither do I." He held out his hand anyway. "No pressure. No tradition. Just... stay close to me." Her wolf pressed up against her ribs, urging her to trust. To move. To follow. Slowly, she placed her hand in his. He pulled her gently into the clearing where the spirits circled silently, their lights forming constellations around the pair. And they began to move-not flawlessly, not formally, but naturally. Aiden guided her carefully, letting her find her own rhythm. Lyria's heartbeat synced with his as they turned through the moonlit clearing. Not a royal dance. Not a ritual. Just two people moving as though they'd done this a thousand times before. Aiden looked down at her, voice low. "For what it's worth," he murmured, "if this is what the prophecy intended... I'm not afraid." Lyria swallowed hard. "I don't want to bring danger to you." He shook his head. "You bring truth. You bring light. You bring... something I haven't felt in years." Her breath caught. But before she could respond, a cold wind swept through the clearing. The music shattered. The spirits dispersed in a burst of frightened blue sparks. And at the edge of the clearing- green fire ignited. Seraphina stepped forward, her magic swirling, her eyes blazing with fury. Her voice cracked like thunder. "Enough." Aiden grabbed Lyria's hand. Seraphina pointed at Lyria, rage trembling in her voice. "You dare dance with the Crowned Heart?" "You dare awaken the prophecy?" "You dare touch what belongs to me?" Aiden stepped in front of Lyria, sword drawn, voice ringing through the clearing. "She belongs to no one." Seraphina's magic flared. And the forest held its breath as the first true battle line between them was drawn.

Ex-Wife, Please Have Some Self-Respect

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."

He stepped in, close enough that she had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. "This is just a contract." "Then why does it bother me?" His hand hovered near her waist, not touching-yet. "It shouldn't." Her breath faltered. His gaze darkened, "And yet it does."
