Chapter 11

CHAPTER 11 - THE RISING BOND The moment Seraphina's fury crashed into the clearing, the entire forest seemed to recoil. Leaves shriveled at the edges. Glow-moss dimmed. Even the ancient runes carved into the lodge walls shuddered as though a storm had torn through their memories. Aiden stepped forward, sword raised, shielding Lyria with his entire body. "Stay behind me," he said quietly. Lyria felt a protest rise in her throat-but swallowed it. Aiden wasn't commanding her. He was protecting her. And her flame was still recovering from the powerful burst she'd unleashed earlier. Seraphina's voice carried through the trees, simmering with venom. "You disrupt what I have built. What is owed to me?" Her eyes flicked to Aiden. "You should have been mine." Aiden didn't lower his blade. "I am not a prize," he said. "And neither is she." Seraphina's gaze darkened. "Very well. If I cannot take what is mine by choice, then I will take it by force." She lifted her hands. Green light ignited between her palms, swirling into a storm of razor-thin magic. Aiden braced, ready. Lyria felt her wolf surge to the forefront, instinct clawing for control. Her silver flame pulsed, answering the danger. Her bones trembled with the urge to shift, to defend, to stand beside him. But she wasn't ready. Not yet. Seraphina hurled the spell. A wave of emerald fire roared toward them. Lyria gasped- but before she could summon her own flame- Aiden stepped into the blast. "NO-!" Silver light exploded. Lyria didn't understand it at first-Aiden wasn't the one who carried the flame. It was hers. Only hers. But as Seraphina's spell hit him- The silver light rippled from his chest, shifting the fire aside, splitting it like water around stone. Aiden stumbled, shocked. Lyria's eyes widened. "You..." she whispered. "You reflected my magic." Aiden looked at his hands in stunned silence. "I-don't know how." Seraphina's eyes widened in horror. "No. No, that is not possible. The Crowned Heart cannot carry the Silver Flame unless-" She stopped. Aiden forced his breath steady. "Unless what?" Seraphina's voice trembled with fury. "Unless you are bonded." Silence struck the clearing like lightning. Aiden and Lyria froze-both staring at each other with the same stunned, breathless realization. Bonded. Not fully. Not knowingly. But enough that magic was beginning to thread between them. Lyria felt her heart twist with a strange mixture of fear and something else-warm, bright, terrifying. Aiden reached for her hand instinctively. She took it without thinking. Another silver ripple spread through the air. Seraphina stepped back as though struck. "No," she hissed. "No, this cannot happen. I will not allow it." She raised both arms. The ground cracked beneath her feet. Vines twisted violently. Trees groaned. Wind shrieked. Lyria tugged Aiden toward her. "We have to run!" "No," Aiden said, tightening his grip on her hand. "We stand together." The silver flame pushed to the surface of Lyria's skin, spreading like moonlit fire. Aiden's heartbeat synced with hers-steady, grounding, certain. Their magic vibrated in harmony, like two halves of a spell written long before either of them was born. Seraphina hurled another bolt of broken green magic. Lyria lifted her arm-her flame arcing outward. Aiden mirrored her movement-his borrowed silver sheen building in his palm. Their powers collided with Seraphina's- BOOM- A shockwave ripped through the clearing. Trees bowed. Stones cracked. The sky flickered as if caught between night and dawn. Seraphina was thrown backward, slamming into a tree with a strangled cry. Her magic sputtered out, sparks spiraling uselessly into the air. She staggered to her feet, glaring at them with a hatred that burned deeper than jealousy. "This is not over," she spat. "I will not let your bond ruin everything." With a swirl of green smoke, she vanished into the trees- The echo of her departing magic leaves a bitter chill behind. Aiden lowered his sword, breath coming fast. Lyria sagged slightly, drained but conscious. For a long moment, neither spoke. Until Aiden whispered, "Are you alright?" Lyria nodded, though her voice trembled. "You used my magic, Aiden. That shouldn't be possible." Aiden stepped closer-hesitant, unsure, but unable to stay away. "Maybe," he said softly, "it's because of the bond." Lyria's heartbeat thudded. She swallowed. "If the prophecy is true... if we are bound-" "Then we face it together," Aiden said, his voice firm with quiet determination. Lyria met his eyes. The bond pulsed-warm, bright, alive. She felt her wolf stir, not in fear but in recognition. Aiden reached up slowly, gently brushing a leaf from her hair. Her breath caught. "Thank you," he said softly. "For saving me. For trusting me. For standing with me even when you didn't have to." Lyria's voice was a whisper. "I think... I was always meant to." Aiden smiled-soft and wonder-struck. But before anything more could be said, the crater wolf reappeared at the edge of the clearing. Its silver eyes glowed with urgency. "The path is shifting," it said. "Seraphina will rally the king's guard. You must leave. Now." Aiden straightened. "Where do we go?" The wolf stepped closer, lowering its head to Lyria. "To the heart of the forest. To the Oracle of Neverland." "There, the truth of your bond will be revealed." Lyria's pulse quickened. Aiden took her hand again. And together, guided by an ancient guardian, they stepped into the deeper shadows of the woods- where the next piece of their destiny awaited.

Ex-Wife, Please Have Some Self-Respect

I was driving through a rainstorm in upstate New York, pushing my old Volvo to the limit just to pick up a Dior gown for my wife, Catarina. She needed it for a gala tonight, where she planned to spend the evening standing next to the man she actually loved, Atticus Deleon. The truck hit me head-on, crossing the center line and sending my car rolling down an embankment in a shriek of twisted metal and shattered glass. As the steering column crushed my chest, my brain didn't see a white light; it was pried open by a digital tsunami, flooding my mind with the "Quantum Archive"-billions of data points on surgery, high-frequency trading, and combat. I woke up in the ICU with three broken ribs and a concussion, but the only thing waiting for me was a screaming voicemail from my wife's assistant. "Jorden, where the hell are you? Catarina has been waiting for thirty minutes! You are so incompetent it's actually impressive." There was no "Are you okay?" or "Are you alive?"-only fury over a ruined dress and a missing tie. While I was being resuscitated, my wife was on Instagram, singing "Endless Love" with Atticus and laughing at my "tantrum." She even called the family lawyer to freeze my credit cards, wanting to make sure I couldn't even buy a coffee without her permission. For three years, I had been the "useful husband," the doormat who apologized whenever she stepped on my toes. But the accident had overwritten my desperation with cold, hard logic, and I realized I had almost died for a woman who viewed me as a liability with a negative return on investment. When Catarina finally stormed into my hospital room to demand an apology for ruining her night, I didn't look at her with the usual puppy-dog eyes. I looked at her with ice in my veins and handed her a manila envelope I had drafted myself. "Sign the divorce papers, Ms. Evans. I'm done being your canary."

He stepped in, close enough that she had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. "This is just a contract." "Then why does it bother me?" His hand hovered near her waist, not touching-yet.
