Chapter 1

My hands trembled as I adjusted the delicate lace veil in the mirror. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of my life—my wedding day. The bridal suite overflowed with white roses and peonies, their sweet scent filling the air with promise.

"You look beautiful, Elena," my mother had whispered before stepping out to check on the arriving guests.

I smoothed down the front of my gown, the silk cool beneath my fingertips. Marcus would be waiting at the altar soon. My heart fluttered with anticipation and nerves.

The door opened, and I turned, expecting my mother's return. Instead, Sarah stood there, her familiar smile not quite reaching her eyes.

"The bride, radiant as ever," she said, stepping inside and closing the door behind her. "Need any last-minute help?"

I embraced her, relief washing over me. "Thank God you're here. I'm so nervous I can barely breathe."

Sarah had been my best friend since we were children. We'd shared every secret, every dream. Having her as my maid of honor felt right—perfect, even.

"Everything will be fine," she assured me, moving to the window. She adjusted the curtain slightly, then checked her watch. The gesture seemed odd, but I dismissed it as wedding-day stress affecting us all.

"Is everything okay out there?" I asked, reaching for my bouquet.

Sarah turned to me, her expression unreadable. "Everything's exactly as it should be."

The door burst open. Two men in dark clothes rushed in, their faces partially concealed. Before I could scream, one clamped his hand over my mouth while the other grabbed my arms.

"Sarah!" I tried to yell through the fingers pressed against my lips. "Help me!"

But Sarah just stood there, watching. As realization dawned, her lips curved into a smile I'd never seen before—cold and satisfied.

"Right on time," she said to the men. "Get her out through the service entrance. No one will see you."

I fought wildly, kicking and twisting, but the men were too strong. One of them injected something into my arm, and the room began to blur around the edges. The last thing I saw was Sarah picking up my bouquet, examining it with casual interest as if she hadn't just betrayed me in the most unimaginable way.

---

I woke to the sound of water. My head pounded, and my wrists burned from the rope binding them behind my back. I was seated on a hard wooden chair in what appeared to be a cabin. Through a dirt-streaked window, I could see trees and hear the rush of a river nearby.

"She's awake," a gruff voice announced.

Footsteps approached, and then the door opened. The sunlight silhouetted a figure in white—my wedding dress.

As she stepped inside, my breath caught in my throat. Sarah stood before me, resplendent in my gown, her hair styled exactly as mine had been. She twirled, the skirts billowing around her.

"What do you think? Does it suit me better?" she asked, her voice light as if we were at a dress fitting.

"Why?" The word scraped from my throat, raw and desperate.

Sarah's smile faltered, then hardened. "Why? Because you've had everything handed to you your entire life, Elena. The perfect family, the perfect career, the perfect fiancé." She spat the last word. "Did you really think Marcus loved you?"

The floor seemed to drop from beneath me. "What are you talking about?"

"We've been together for months," she said, adjusting my veil on her head. "He chose me, Elena. He just didn't have the courage to tell you. So we found another solution."

Horror washed over me in cold waves. "Marcus... he knows about this?"

"It was his idea, actually." Sarah checked her reflection in a small mirror she'd brought. "Not the kidnapping part—that was my touch. He just wanted you... gone."

Tears blurred my vision. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical pain could.

"By this time tomorrow, everyone will think you've run away, overwhelmed by wedding jitters." Sarah approached, leaning down until her face was inches from mine. "And in a few weeks, when they find what's left of you, they'll think it was a tragic accident."

She straightened, smoothing the dress. "I should go. I have a wedding to attend—mine." She walked to the door, pausing to look back at me. "Goodbye, Elena. Thanks for everything."

The door closed behind her, leaving me alone with the two men who would become my executioners. As their muffled conversation filtered through the thin walls, I knew I had only one choice: escape or die trying.
