Chapter 2

By noon, the group chat had forgotten how to be careful.

Whatever silence my hundred thousand dollars had bought lasted about as long as it took Naomi to find her footing. Then she came back louder than ever.

**Naomi:** Okay NEW RULES. The betting pool is officially part of the reunion program. Winners announced on stage at 9 p.m. đŸŽ€

**Naomi:** Side bets now open!!

**Naomi:** 1. Megan's dress costs under $50 👗

**2. Megan takes the subway 🚇**

**3. Megan chickens out and doesn't show at all 🐔**

The money started moving again, faster this time, like they needed to prove the first silence hadn't meant anything.

**Tyler B:** $2k on subway. She'll show up with a MetroCard around her neck lmao

**Jess K:** $500 on under $50. Maybe she'll wear the uniform 💀

**Naomi:** Jess I'm CRYING

The chicken bet climbed the fastest. Apparently a hundred grand from me was easier to explain as a bluff than as something real.

Then Ryan.

**Ryan Maddox:** Guys, come on. Don't go overboard.

Three hearts appeared under it before his next message landed.

**Ryan Maddox:** Megan, if you do come, text me first. I know the staff entrance at the Grand Crown. I can walk you in through the back so you don't have to deal with the lobby. It can be a lot if you're not used to places like that.

I read it twice. The first time for the words. The second time for what was under them.

He wasn't telling them to stop. He was telling me where I belonged.

A knock pulled me out of it. Lily poked her head in.

"Daniel Okafor from the Grand Crown is here. He says it's about tonight's banquet."

"Send him in."

Daniel was in his fifties, silver at the temples, wearing the hotel's navy blazer like he'd been born in it. He'd managed the Grand Crown for eleven years under three different owners. This morning, I'd become the fourth.

He set a folder on my desk and didn't sit.

"Ms. Reed, I wasn't sure whether to bring this to you on your first day." He opened it to a highlighted page. "The Westbrook reunion booking came with a special request list from the organizer. Most of it's standard. Open bar, DJ, photo booth. But these three items..."

He didn't finish. He didn't have to.

**One (1) housekeeping cart, fully stocked.**

**One (1) women's staff uniform, older gray style if available.**

**Two (2) bottles of red wine, reserved for activity.**

In the notes column, in Naomi's cheerful font:

**For the "Prom Memory Game." Please place cart near stage. Thank you!! ✹**

I stared at the word *Game* until it stopped looking like a word.

"The older gray uniform," Daniel said quietly. "We retired that design six years ago. She described it in detail."

"She would."

"My banquet captain wanted to refuse it outright. I agree with her." His jaw tightened. "Some of my housekeeping staff will be working that floor tonight. I'm not comfortable having a uniform they wear to earn a living turned into a costume for a joke."

"Neither am I."

He let out a breath. "Then I'll call the organizer and cancel those items."

"No."

He looked up. "Ma'am?"

"Keep them. The cart, the uniform, the wine. Give her all of it."

For a moment, I watched him try to decide whether he'd misjudged me. It was a fair question. He'd known me for three hours.

"Ms. Reed, with respect..."

"Every request she's made, I want in writing," I said. "Emails, forms, call logs, anything she says to your banquet team. If she adds to it, document that too. Nobody on your staff is to touch that uniform or play along with anything. You just deliver what she asked for and step back."

"And if she escalates?"

"Then she escalates on the record."

Daniel was quiet. Then something in his face shifted, the look of a man who'd spent eleven years watching guests treat his people like furniture.

"You want her to finish it herself," he said.

"I want her to build the whole thing with her own hands. Every piece." I closed the folder. "If I cancel it now, she gets to tell everyone the hotel was uptight. If she goes through with it, nobody gets to call it a joke later."

He picked up the folder and tucked it under his arm. "I'll have my team forward everything to your office by five."

"Thank you, Daniel."

He paused at the door. "For what it's worth, Ms. Reed, I think the staff will like working for you."

The door clicked shut. Two minutes later, my laptop chimed.

Ethan didn't bother with hello. "Lily says you asked for the Grand Crown's evening schedule."

"Lily talks too much."

"Lily is the reason this company runs. You're going tonight."

"I told you I was."

"You told a group chat you were. I assumed you'd sleep on it." He leaned back, arms folded. "Let me come with you. I'll wear the good suit. I'll stand in the corner and look expensive and slightly threatening."

"No."

"Megan..."

"I'm not walking in there on a man's arm, Ethan." My voice came out harder than I meant it to, and I didn't soften it. "Seven years ago, the only person who ever tried to rescue me was Ryan, and he did it so he could decide exactly how small I got to be. If you're standing next to me, half of them will spend the night asking who you are. The other half will decide you're the reason I made it."

He held my gaze through the screen. He didn't argue. That was the thing about Ethan. He actually listened when people said no.

"Okay," he said.

"Okay?"

"Okay. You don't need a bodyguard." He tapped something on his keyboard, and a file dropped into my inbox. "Then don't take protection. Take control."

I opened it. **Grand Crown Hotel: Incoming Management Structure.** Department heads, security leads, banquet captains, all reporting up the chain to one name at the top.

Mine.

"Every door in that building answers to you tonight," he said. "Use them however you want."

"You drafted this in advance."

"I draft everything in advance. It's why you pay me." He hesitated, and his tone changed. "One more thing. Caldwell Properties has been trying to reach Aster Crown Capital through a broker. Third attempt this quarter. They want an extension on their loan."

"Caldwell." The name tugged at something. "How big?"

"Big enough that they've stopped being polite about it. File's in your inbox too."

He logged off. I opened the second file.

**Caldwell Properties, Inc. — Outstanding Obligations**

**Principal: $180,000,000**

**Lender: Aster Crown Capital**

**Maturity: 30 days**

Below it was a log of meeting requests. Richard Caldwell, CEO, had asked to see me personally every month for six months. Each one had been handled by my lending team, because I didn't take meetings with borrowers who were behind on their disclosures.

I scrolled to the company profile. Family-held. Richard Caldwell, founder. His son listed as Vice President of Development.

**Ryan Maddox (uses mother's maiden name).**

I sat back.

Ryan had been paying for his penthouse suite with my money all along.

For a long moment I just looked at his name on my screen, sitting in a column of liabilities.

It would have been easy. One email to my lending team, and Caldwell Properties would be finished before the month was out.

But I hadn't built Aster Crown by making decisions with my pulse. If Richard Caldwell's company was worth saving, it would survive a real review. If it wasn't, it wouldn't need my help to fall.

I pulled up the request, clicked into the comment field, and typed:

**No extension before full asset review.**

I signed it and sent it to legal.

My phone buzzed in the drawer. I took it out.

A voice message from Ryan. Forty-two seconds.

I pressed play.

"Megan, hey. Look." A sigh, the patient kind, the kind he used to use on teachers. "I get it. You want to show everyone you're doing fine. But a hundred grand? Everyone knows you don't have that. Just... don't embarrass yourself just to prove a point, okay? I'm saying this because I care."

The recording clicked off.

I held down the message and tapped Delete.

Then I stood, crossed the office, and opened the garment bag Lily had dropped off that morning, the one I'd told her I probably wouldn't need.

Three gowns hung inside. Midnight blue. Black silk. Deep wine red.

I ran my fingers over the red one and smiled.
