Chapter 3

The ballroom feed was the third camera in my rotation, and by four o'clock I had it full-screen.

Naomi got there first. Forty minutes before the doors opened, garment bag over one arm, a roll of packing tape in the other.

She checked both directions like a director walking a set, then unzipped the bag.

Gray fabric. White piping at the collar. One chest pocket. The old cut, the one with shoulders that swallowed whoever stood inside them.

Daniel had been right. She'd described my uniform down to the seams.

She hooked it on the coat rack beside the entrance and taped a sign to the wall above it, black marker looping up at the end of every letter.

**MEGAN'S CORNER**

Then she stepped back and took a photo of it like she'd finished a wedding cake.

I watched from the Owner's Suite on the twenty-eighth floor, coffee going cold beside me. I kept waiting for something to move in my chest. Nothing did. It felt like a package arriving — one I'd ordered months ago and mostly forgotten about.

Ryan walked in at 4:15. He stopped in front of the rack, hands in his pockets, and read the sign twice.

"Jesus, Naomi."

"Don't."

"No, I mean it. It's funny." He tilted his head. "It's just a little much."

"Everything's a little much at a reunion."

He laughed. He didn't touch the sign, didn't take it down, didn't even look uncomfortable. He flagged a server passing with an empty tray.

"Hey. The two bottles of red I had sent down. Bring them right here."

"Here, sir?"

"Here." Ryan tapped the floor beside the uniform. "If we're doing the bit, we do it all the way. It doesn't land without the wine."

The server glanced at the sign, then at Ryan, and went to get the bottles.

---

By 5:20 the ballroom was half full and the feed had audio.

I turned the volume up and let it run while I read through the closing file Daniel had left on the desk. Photos in the doorways, a livestream of the ice sculpture, someone narrating the room like a sports broadcast. Then Tyler B crossed to the housekeeping cart parked beside the stage and started folding bills out of a money clip.

"Two hundred," he said, tucking them into the cart's side pocket. "I want to hand it to her personally."

"What if she doesn't show?"

"She'll show. She put up a hundred grand."

"That's not real money."

"It's real." Naomi didn't look up from her phone. "I had it checked."

Jess K leaned in. "Checked how?"

"I know a person." Naomi shrugged, and the whole group laughed at the sheer pleasure of it.

Ryan set his glass down on the table and raised his hands.

"Okay, listen up. Nobody actually messes with her tonight. I mean that."

"Since when are you her bodyguard?"

"I'm not." He picked the glass back up. "She had a thing for me, that's all. Sophomore year. She used to leave notes in my locker, folded up like origami. Sweet, honestly."

The room made a sound — half laughter, half delight at getting something new to chew on.

"RYAN."

"I'm just saying." He was grinning now, letting it build. "Be nice to her. She's probably still carrying a torch. That's a lot of pressure to put on one night."

"So this is basically a date for her."

"Basically." He lifted the glass toward the empty chair at the end of the table. "I'll be a gentleman."

I muted the feed and let the room go silent.

Seven years ago that would have put me on the floor of a bathroom with my hands shaking. Now I just noticed how small everything looked through a camera lens. The ballroom held three hundred people and it was the size of a shoebox from up here.

Somebody knocked.

"Come in."

Daniel came in carrying the folder with the department signatures, and behind him the rest of the leadership team filed in without being told where to sit. Priya Raman from Aster Crown's finance team. Marcus Boyd, head of security. Yvette Salas, the banquet captain, still in her black vest from the floor.

"Sit, please." I opened the folder. "Let's finish this."

We went down the list the way I go down every list. Retention first.

"Housekeeping, all twenty-six," Priya said. "Nobody takes a pay cut through the transition. The uniform allowance stays."

"Raise the floor to twenty-four an hour. Backdated to the first of the month."

Priya's pen stopped moving. "That's above the comp band."

"Then move the band."

Yvette's chin came up a fraction. She didn't say anything, and I didn't make her.

Renovation next. East wing closed for six weeks, guest floors redone in phases so nobody gets laid off for the downtime, contractors vetted by Marcus before anyone steps past the loading dock.

"One more thing, Ms. Reed." Daniel slid a second sheet across the desk. The reunion's special request list, printed, with Naomi Pratt's signature at the bottom.

The uniform. The cart. The wine.

"It's still out there," he said. "Hanging on the rack by the door."

"I know. I watched her put it up."

His jaw worked. "We've had two staff members ask me if they're expected to play along tonight. My answer was no. I want to make sure that's still your answer."

"It is."

"Then may I cancel the items?"

"No." I closed the folder. "Leave them exactly where they are."

Yvette looked at me for a long moment. She'd spent twenty years on that floor, and she'd learned to read a guest's face the way other people read weather. Whatever she found, she nodded once and stood up.

"Anything else?"

"No. Go back to your evening." I stood with them. "I'll be down shortly."

The door shut behind them. I walked to the closet.

Three gowns from this morning were still hanging there, untouched. Midnight blue, black silk, deep wine red.

I took the black.

No jewelry. No clutch. Just the dress, the shoes, and the elevator key that opens every floor in this building.

At 6:58 I picked up my phone and opened the ballroom feed one more time.

Naomi was on stage with a microphone, one hand shading her eyes against the lights.

"Okay, everybody listen! Nine minutes!" She spun in a slow circle, hunting the room. "If Megan Reed isn't through those doors by 7:07, she forfeits, and whoever took the other side splits her money!"

A cheer went up that rattled the speakers.

At the table by the stage, Ryan got to his feet, straightened his jacket, and lifted his glass.

"To old friends," he said. "Some people never escape where they came from."

The room drank to it.

And then Daniel Okafor walked through the service door at the back of the ballroom with the entire leadership team behind him — Priya, Marcus, Yvette, eight others in dark suits and crisp vests, moving in a line down the length of the room without a word to anybody.

The noise died in sections, like lights going off in a house.

A bartender leaned toward Marcus as he passed. "What's going on?"

Marcus kept walking.

"The new owner has arrived."

I watched it on a two-inch screen from inside the elevator, and then I turned the phone off and put it in my hand, and the car began to slow.

The doors slid open.
