Chapter 1

The Grand Crown Hotel acquisition was down to its last forty pages when my phone started buzzing against the glass desk.

Once. Twice. Then it wouldn't stop.

I ignored it through the indemnity clause and the staff retention terms. By the time I reached the property valuation, the vibration had rattled my pen halfway across the desk.

I flipped the phone over.

**Westbrook High Class of '17 – 94 new messages.**

I hadn't seen that group chat light up in seven years. I'd muted it the night of graduation and never opened it again. I should have left the chat entirely, but back then even that had felt like admitting they'd won.

I opened it.

Naomi Pratt had posted a video. Under it, a line of crying-laughing emojis ran down the screen like a spilled drink.

**Naomi:** Found this cleaning out my old laptop. Reunion hype starts NOW 😂😂

My thumb hovered over the play button. I already knew what it was. I pressed it anyway.

The ballroom at prom. String lights, a DJ booth, everyone in rented tuxes and sequins. And me, eighteen years old, kneeling on the parquet floor in a gray housekeeping uniform two sizes too big, scrubbing at a spreading red stain with a rag.

I'd taken that shift because the venue paid double for prom night. I needed the money for my mom's prescriptions.

In the video, a pair of polished black dress shoes stepped into frame. Ryan Maddox. Captain of the lacrosse team, prom king, the boy I'd once been stupid enough to have a crush on. He waited until I'd wiped the last of the wine away. Then he set his heel down on the clean spot and dragged it slowly across the wood, leaving a dark smear of red.

"Missed a spot, Reed," his younger voice said.

The crowd around him howled. Someone whistled. Naomi, holding the camera, was laughing so hard the frame shook.

The girl on the screen didn't look up. She just started scrubbing again.

The video ended. I sat very still in my office on the thirty-second floor while the chat kept scrolling.

**Tyler B:** omg I forgot about this

**Jess K:** Ryan you were SO mean lmao

**Ryan Maddox:** Classic.

One word. Twenty-five years old, a real job, probably a mortgage, and that was still all he had to say about it.

I set the phone face down. It buzzed again almost immediately.

**Naomi:** Okay, okay, serious question for the group. Poll time! 🗳️

**POLL: Is Megan Reed STILL doing housekeeping?**

**Yes – obviously 💯**

**No – she upgraded to waitressing 🍽️**

The votes poured in. Yes climbed to thirty-one within a minute. No sat at four, and I was pretty sure at least two of those were meant as jokes.

**Naomi:** Let's make it interesting. Buy-ins open. Loser pays the bar tab at the reunion.

Then someone had set up an actual betting pool. Two hundred dollars. Five hundred. Tyler threw in fifteen hundred and a flexing emoji. It was a game to them. It had always been a game.

**Naomi:** Oh AND guess where the reunion is this year?? The Grand Crown downtown!! 👑

**Naomi:** Megan, if you're lurking, come through! You could pick up a shift that night and make some tips 😘

I looked at the stack of papers in front of me. The Grand Crown's gold crest was embossed on the cover page.

For a second, I almost laughed.

Then Ryan typed again. I watched the three dots pulse for a long time, like he was choosing his words carefully.

**Ryan Maddox:** Come on, guys, we're not seniors anymore. Let's be adults about this.

**Ryan Maddox:** Megan, seriously, no hard feelings. If you show up, I'll book the penthouse suite, the most expensive room in the building. You clean it, and I'll leave you a thousand-dollar tip. That's probably a month's pay, right? Consider it an apology. 😊

Hearts flooded under his message.

**Jess K:** Ryan's such a gentleman now 🥹

**Naomi:** Growth!!

That was the thing about Ryan. He'd never been cruel in a way that looked cruel. He always made it sound like a favor.

Seven years ago, I would have closed the app with shaking hands and cried in the staff bathroom. I would have told myself they'd forget about me eventually.

They hadn't forgotten. They'd just been saving me for later.

I picked the phone back up and opened the betting pool.

The top bet was Tyler's fifteen hundred. Most were a few hundred, tossed in like pocket change to feel like part of the joke. There was a line at the bottom I hadn't noticed before.

**Side bet: Megan actually shows up. Nobody's taking it lol.**

I typed in the amount and confirmed the transfer from my personal account.

**Megan Reed placed $100,000 on: Megan shows up.**

The chat stopped.

No emojis. No typing bubbles. For the first time since Naomi posted that video, the screen sat completely still.

I counted to ten. Then I typed one message.

**Megan Reed:** Keep the room clean. I'll be there.

I sent it and set the phone down beside the contract.

It took less than thirty seconds for it to buzz again. Not the group this time. A private message.

**Ryan Maddox:** Megan, what the hell are you doing?

**Ryan Maddox:** Is that real money? Did you seriously just put up a hundred grand?

**Ryan Maddox:** Look, if you're in some kind of trouble, you don't have to prove anything. I can talk to Naomi and get the bet canceled. Nobody has to know.

**Ryan Maddox:** I'm trying to help you here.

I read every message. The little word *Read* appeared under each one.

I didn't answer.

My laptop chimed. A video call request, right on schedule. I accepted it and Ethan Cross filled the screen, jacket off, sleeves rolled up, sitting in the Aster Crown conference room two floors down. He'd been my general counsel for four years and my friend for longer. He was also the only person in this building who'd ever seen that video, because I'd shown it to him on the night I founded the company.

"You look like someone just keyed your car," he said.

"Someone did. Seven years ago."

He leaned closer to the camera. "Naomi's group chat?"

"You saw it?"

"My assistant follows gossip on half the East Coast. She sent me a screenshot of your bet." He rubbed his jaw. "A hundred thousand, Megan."

"It's a rounding error."

"It's a statement." He paused. "Are you sure you want to go to this in person? It's a class reunion. Bad punch, worse people. You could send a lawyer to the front desk with a letter and be done with it."

"I could."

"But you won't."

I looked at the frozen thumbnail of the video still sitting at the top of the chat. The girl in the gray uniform, head down, rag in her hand.

"I'm not going to prove them wrong about who I was seven years ago," I said. "They weren't wrong. I was poor. I cleaned their mess. That was true."

Ethan didn't say anything. He knew when to let me finish.

"I just want to watch their faces," I said. "I want to see how long they keep laughing once they find out who I am now."

He was quiet for a moment. Then his mouth tugged into a small, crooked smile.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side."

"You already did. Twice."

"And I'm still employed. That's character growth." He glanced at something off-screen. "Final documents are on your desk?"

"Signing them now."

"Then I'll let you get to it. Congratulations, boss."

The call ended. The office went quiet except for the hum of the air vents and the faint sound of traffic thirty-two floors below.

I pulled the contract toward me and turned to the last page.

**GRAND CROWN HOTEL ACQUISITION AGREEMENT**

**Seller:** Grand Crown Hospitality Group, LLC

**Buyer:** ________________

I uncapped my pen. My hand was completely steady, and I noticed that, the way you notice a scar that stopped hurting.

**Buyer: Aster Crown Holdings**

**Signed: Megan Reed, Executive Chair**

I set the pen down.

A soft knock came at the door. Lily Garza, my executive assistant, stepped in holding a tablet, her face lit up in a way she usually saved for Friday afternoons.

"The seller's counsel just confirmed receipt," she said. "Funds cleared five minutes ago. Everything's filed."

"So that's it?"

"That's it." She grinned. "The hotel is officially yours."

I looked down at my phone. The group chat had started moving again, slowly, cautiously.

**Naomi:** lol she's bluffing

**Naomi:** Ryan, make sure you book that suite 😂

I turned the screen off and slid it into my drawer.

Let him book it.

I owned every room in the building now.
