Chapter 2

Three weeks into my marriage, Adrian had learned to leave the east-wing guest suite alone.

He did not apologize for the wedding portrait. I did not move back into his bedroom. We reached an unspoken ceasefire inside the larger ceasefire our families had negotiated for us.

At breakfast, we were civil.

At public events, I wore his ring and stood at his side.

At night, we slept behind different doors.

It was not a marriage anyone would envy, but at least the boundaries were mine.

Then my birthday arrived.

Adrian surprised me by asking me to dinner.

Not a family dinner. Not another foundation event. Just the two of us in the smaller dining room overlooking the garden.

I nearly said no out of habit.

Then I saw the cake on the sideboard.

Chocolate with raspberry filling.

My favorite.

"You remembered," I said.

Adrian pulled out my chair. "You mentioned it once."

It was such a small thing that I hated how much it affected me.

For the first hour, we almost felt normal.

We talked about the university program I had left when my father's financial problems became impossible to ignore. Adrian asked what I had studied. I told him business analytics. He admitted he had expected something softer.

"Why?"

"You don't like confrontation."

I laughed. "You have known me for three weeks."

"Long enough to notice you avoid pointless fights."

"That isn't the same thing as being soft."

The corner of his mouth moved.

It might have become a smile.

His phone rang before I could be sure.

He looked at the screen.

Everything in his face changed.

"What happened?" I asked.

He was already standing. "Camille was in an accident."

The warmth left the room so quickly it felt physical.

"Is she hurt?"

"I don't know yet."

He grabbed his jacket.

I swallowed my first response. A car accident was not a social slight. If Camille was injured, he should go.

"Call me when you know she's safe."

Adrian paused as if he had expected an argument.

"I will."

He left.

The candles burned lower.

At ten, I asked the staff to clear the food.

At eleven, I texted him once.

Is she okay?

No answer.

At midnight, I blew out my own birthday candles.

I told myself that a frightened person in a hospital mattered more than a dinner. That part was true.

What hurt was not that he had gone.

It was that, once again, he had forgotten I existed the second Camille needed him.

I woke just after seven the next morning and went downstairs in jeans and a sweater.

Camille was already there.

She came down the main staircase barefoot, wearing one of Adrian's white dress shirts.

I recognized it because I had bought it for him before the wedding. He had complained that his old shirts pulled at the shoulders, so I had chosen a different cut and had the cuffs monogrammed.

A.V.

The initials showed when Camille rolled one sleeve.

She saw me looking.

"My blouse was covered in blood from the accident," she said. "It wasn't mine. The woman in the other car cut her forehead and I helped hold pressure until the ambulance came. Adrian brought me here after the ER discharged me."

I looked for bruises. There was one near her collarbone and a shallow cut at her temple.

"I'm glad you're okay."

For a second, she seemed surprised.

Then she smiled. "Thank you."

I nodded at the shirt. "The guest rooms have robes."

Her fingers touched the cuff.

"I was cold. Adrian grabbed the first clean thing he saw."

Maybe that was true.

It did not make the sight easier.

We entered the breakfast room together.

Teresa was already pouring coffee.

"Camille, black, no sugar," she said automatically, sliding a cup toward Adrian's right-hand seat.

Camille sat there.

No one asked her to.

No one needed to.

Adrian came in two minutes later, showered and dressed in another white shirt. He looked tired.

"You didn't answer my text," I said.

His eyes flicked toward me. "It got late."

"It was already late when you left."

"Bella."

One word. A warning not to do this at breakfast.

I sat down.

Nico entered last, stole a piece of toast from Matteo's plate, and dropped into his chair.

Camille laughed.

"You still do that?"

"Do what?"

"Take food and act shocked when someone notices." She shook her head. "Remember when you were fifteen and you stole Luca's whiskey from the cabinet? I told your father I had moved the bottle so you wouldn't get punished."

Nico's grin disappeared.

"I remember."

"You were terrified."

"I was fifteen."

"Exactly."

The exchange was harmless on the surface.

But I watched the table respond to it.

Teresa smiled at the memory. Matteo laughed under his breath. Even Luca's mouth softened.

Camille carried years of access I could never manufacture. She knew their childhood injuries, their private jokes, which coffee they drank, which lies they had told their father. She did not need to demand a place here because everyone had built one around her long before I arrived.

That realization should have made me compete harder.

Instead, it made me stop competing.

After breakfast, I went to the library and called Professor Reynolds, my former academic adviser.

"Bella Moretti?" she said when she answered. "I was beginning to think you'd disappeared."

"I almost did."

"Are you coming back?"

I looked through the tall windows toward the drive.

"If you'll still have me."

"Your leave was approved, not permanent. We can reactivate you for the next term."

Relief hit so quickly I had to sit down.

"Do it."

Matteo found me half an hour later with my laptop open and enrollment forms covering the desk.

"Going somewhere?"

"Back to school."

His face lit in a way Adrian's had not when I told him what I studied.

"Good."

"That's it?"

"Were you hoping for a lecture?"

"Apparently I've adjusted to this family faster than I thought."

He laughed and sat across from me.

I told him I wanted to enroll under my own name, without the Valenti foundation making calls or buying favors. I wanted an ordinary schedule. Ordinary classmates. Ordinary problems.

"Then that's what you get," he said. "No security detail in the lecture hall unless there's a credible threat. No Valenti donations magically appearing in your department."

"You can arrange that?"

"I can make sure we don't interfere. There's a difference."

"Thank you."

"Don't thank me for letting you have a life."

Adrian was standing in the doorway.

I had not heard him arrive.

His gaze moved from Matteo to my open laptop.

"You don't need to go back to school."

The old version of me might have explained myself.

The woman who had blown out her own birthday candles did not.

"I wasn't asking permission."

Nico, passing behind Adrian, barked out a laugh.

Adrian ignored him.

"You are a Valenti now. There are security concerns."

"Then handle the security concerns. Don't turn them into a cage."

"Bella—"

"I gave up school to keep my father from collapsing under debt. I married you to keep Gabriel safe and stop a war. I'm not giving up the rest of my life because it's convenient for you."

Silence settled over the doorway.

Matteo leaned back, saying nothing, but I could feel his support beside me.

Adrian noticed it too.

His eyes shifted to his brother.

Something sharp passed between them.

It was the first time I realized my marriage was not the only relationship in this house beginning to change.
