Chapter 4

The silence stretched between us, taut as piano wire.

"Maverick."

The voice was barely above a whisper, but it sliced through the vaulted hall like a dull blade.

Maverick flinched. The muscles along his neck tightened, his chin jerking half an inch to the side. But he didn't turn. He kept his cold, calculated stare locked squarely on me, managing the optics of the room.

Maxine stepped past the threshold of the double doors. Her frail frame seemed tiny beneath the arched timber rafters. Her faded woolen coat was greyed with road dust from the Greyhound bus, her silver hair pulled loose from its pins. She took three trembling steps down the aisle, her worn shoes scuffing against the polished stone. Thirty years of buried grief, of raising a boy alone in an Ohio trailer after an Alpha father cast her aside, trembled in the hollow of her throat.

"Maverick," she whispered again. "Look at me."

Before she could take another step, silk swished sharply on the dais.

Selena moved. Her eyes raked over the dusty coat, the cracked shoes, the cheap canvas bag clutched against Maxine’s chest. Selena had never visited the rural Ohio borders. She had never been allowed to. To her, this wasn't an elder; it was an omega stray interrupting her coronation.

"What is this filth doing in the ceremonial hall?" Selena barked, stepping off the altar steps. Her voice rang out sharp and shrill, an ugly imitation of pack authority. She marched straight up to Maxine, chin tilted, her hand resting deliberately on her swollen belly. "You don't track your back-country dirt into my mating rite. Kneel and show respect to your future Luna, or I'll have the guard throw you into the river."

Maxine blinked, her cloudy eyes wide with bewilderment. "Child, I'm his—"

"I said *kneel!*"

Selena didn't wait. With a sneer of pure disgust, she placed both hands against Maxine’s shoulders and shoved. Hard.

"Maxine, no!" I screamed.

The old woman had no wolf strength left to brace herself. Her boots skidded over the slick flagstones. Her arms flailed, the small tin of shortbread cookies flying from her hands, the lid popping off as golden crumbs and embroidered blue cloth scattered across the floor.

Her head struck the sharp granite corner of an ornamental pillar with a sickening, hollow *crack*.

Maxine hit the ground like a bundle of dry sticks.

She didn't cry out. Her limbs instantly locked rigid, a violent, full-body tremor ripping through her flesh as blood—dark and thick—began pooling from the base of her skull onto the white stone.

"Maxine!"

My boots dug into the floor as I lunged forward.

A heavy wall of muscle slammed directly into my path. Maverick stepped between us, his broad chest cutting off my line of sight. He didn't look down at the woman bleeding out behind his boots. He didn't glance at the scattered shortbread. His jaw was set hard to the left, his mind already executing the next stage of his strategy.

He looked at me, cold and hollow. Then, with the unhurried cadence of a man who had rehearsed every syllable in a mirror, he turned his back on me and faced the stunned Silverfang elders in the pews.

"Elders of Silverfang," Maverick announced, his Alpha tone ringing clear through the vaulted rafters. "Witness the severance of an obsolete tie."

He turned his head slightly, his gaze dropping to me like an executioner's blade.

"I, Maverick Stone, Alpha of the Nighthollow Pack, reject you, Harper Ashwood, as my mate and Luna—"

The words didn't just carry sound; they carried the biological violence of an Alpha's decree.

On the left side of my neck, the mate mark exploded into absolute, agonizing ice.

It was like liquid nitrogen poured straight into my jugular. The metaphysical cord that had tied my soul to his for five years shredded from the inside out. My wolf, already starved and battered, let out a single, mangled shriek behind my ribs—a sound of raw biological mutilation—and then went dead, terrifyingly silent, collapsing into the black void of my chest.

My knees gave out.

The floor rushed up to meet me. My palms hit the cold stone, skidding inches from the puddle of Maxine’s blood. My left hand clamped violently over my throat, trying to hold the dying heat inside my skin, while my right hand stretched uselessly toward the convulsing elder just past Maverick’s boots.

I couldn't draw breath. The air in my lungs was glass.

Maverick stopped.

He didn't finish the vow. He didn't speak the final phrase that would legally release me from the bond. He left the severance suspended halfway—leaving the biological poison gnawing through my veins, trapping me in a state of living amputation.

He looked down at me, watching the tremor rack my spine, calculating the exact threshold of my pain.

Slowly, deliberately, Maverick reached inside the lapel of his ceremonial cloak. He pulled out a thick parchment document stamped with the heavy wax crest of the Lycan Council: a Luna Accord.

"You've caused a disturbance, Harper," he said smoothly, addressing the hall as if he were an arbitrator managing an unruly tenant. He didn't look at Maxine. From where she lay behind the pillar, her face was hidden in the deep shadows of the stone base, obscured by the pool of dark blood spreading toward his heels. "You brought an unauthorized guest onto foreign territory. Now she's injured."

He turned slightly, signaling toward the back of the lodge where Edgar Marsh stood with his velvet-lined healer’s kit.

"Silverfang's healer is standing by," Maverick continued, his voice dropping into a flat, unyielding command. "He will attend to your mother the second you sign this."

He let the heavy pages drop onto the floor in front of my trembling hands.

"Sign the Accord, Harper. Surrender your territorial rights, your status, and all claims to Nighthollow. Renounce your gifts. Sign it, or the old woman bleeds out on this stone."
