Chapter 5

The parchment hit the flagstones two inches from my knuckles. The heavy red wax of the Lycan Council seal glared up at me, slick and mocking beneath the torchlight.

Liquid frost was chewing through the left side of my neck. Every pulse of my heart

dragged another needle of fire through my bloodstream, the half-spoken rejection vow rotting the bond from the inside out. My wolf lay completely motionless in the hollow of my chest. She wasn't whimpering. She was pinned under thirty pounds of biological lead, suffocating beneath the weight of an Alpha’s deliberate mutilation.

Behind Maverick’s boots, the wet, rhythmic slapping of Maxine’s heels against the stone didn't stop. Her body arched, another violent seizure locking her spine, her blood seeping outward until the crimson edge tapped against the heel of my boot.

Maverick didn't look down at her. He didn't even drop his chin. He stood tall, chest puffed in stolen Silverfang fur, waiting for me to break. He waited for me to cry, to scramble for the pen, to trade my five years of service for a medic’s touch.

I pulled my collar down.

My fingers were trembling, but I pressed my flat palm hard against the frozen meat of my throat, feeling the blackened, dying edges of his mark under my skin. I took one ragged breath. Then another.

I extended my right hand.

I didn't pick up the document. I didn't reach for the quill he had tucked inside his breast pocket. With the heel of my palm, I shoved the heavy Luna Accord across the slick stones, sending the thick parchment spinning through the red puddle until it slapped against the toe of his boot, soaked in his mother's blood.

I looked straight up into his eyes.

"You haven't finished the vow," I said.

My voice wasn't loud. It didn't carry the roar of my suppressed wolf, and it didn't hold the desperate plea of a discarded Luna. It was quiet, level, and flat as an iron plate.

Maverick’s left jaw ticked hard.

"You left it open," I said, locking my gaze on his narrowing pupils. "Because you're a coward. You think the pain will make me sign away Nighthollow before your lungs have to pay the toll of severing a sacred mate bond."

A low rustle rippled through the wooden pews. The Silverfang witnesses leaned forward, their grey witnessing robes whispering against the timber.

Maverick didn't answer. He didn't have to.

From the shadows near the grand archway, a man cleared his throat.

Edgar Marsh stepped out into the light. He carried a polished rosewood healer’s kit, the brass corners gleaming, a clean velvet strap slung across his shoulder. He walked with the precise, pompous stride of a man who believed a medical title gave him the authority of a king.

He didn't walk toward the woman seizing on the floor. He didn't even drop to one knee to check her airway or touch the dark pool spreading from her skull.

Instead, Edgar stopped five paces away, right beside Maverick. His right thumb rested on the ornate silver clasp of his kit. *Click.* *Click.* The metal snapped rhythmically under his nail.

He turned to the crowded pews, raising his voice so it echoed cleanly off the high timber beams.

"As chief healer of the Silverfang territory, I must advise the assembly," Edgar announced, his tone dripping with clinical condescension. He kept his eyes fixed firmly on Maverick, never once lowering his gaze to the stone. "The subject on the floor is exhibiting signs of voluntary psychosomatic distress."

The hall fell dead silent.

"What did you say?" I rasped, the words tearing through my raw throat.

Edgar didn't look at me. *Click.* *Click.*

"It is a documented tactic among rogue infiltrators and low-caste omegas," Edgar continued smoothly to the elders. "A feigned neurological episode. She struck the pillar with negligible force. This sudden, violent display is nothing more than a manufactured medical crisis—staged to establish a territorial claim under the Emergency Sanctuary Clause."

A sharp murmur broke out across the hall.

"Staged?" an elder whispered.

"Bringing an omega stray to disrupt a mating rite..." another sneered from the third row. "Disgraceful."

"She’s trying to trap Nighthollow into a blood-debt!"

The room turned. The collective warmth of the witnessing pack hardened into a wall of cold contempt. Selena let out a soft, delicate laugh from the dais, folding her hands over her belly as if she had just won a bet.

Maverick looked down at me, a faint, victorious smirk curling the corner of his mouth. "You heard the healer, Harper. Pack law doesn't permit treatment for fraudulent claims. You sign the accord, or she stays on that floor until the guards drag both of you past our border."

Maxine’s heels jerked violently once more. Her mouth opened, a choked, bloody bubble bursting on her pale lips.

*Click.* *Click.* Edgar smugly adjusted his velvet strap.

Then, from the far back of the ceremonial lodge, a voice cut through the air.

"Marsh."

It wasn't loud. It wasn't shouted. It fell into the room like a dead weight dropped from the ceiling, cold and heavy enough to freeze the breath in every throat.

The murmuring stopped instantly.

A tall figure stepped out from the deep shadows near the barred double doors. He wore no ceremonial cloak, no witnessing robes, and no ornate regalia. Just a dark charcoal wool coat, broad shoulders that blocked the light from the corridor, and a presence so dense, so immovably solid, that the space around him seemed to warp.

Alpha Ryan Voss.

The Stormridge Alpha walked down the center aisle alone. He didn't hurry. His dark eyes didn't dart around the hall; they stayed pinned like iron spikes to the healer standing beside Maverick. As he moved past the pews, high-ranking Silverfang warriors instinctively shrank back into their seats, their wolves pulling inward beneath the weight of an Alpha whose pack held three times their territory.

Ryan didn't stop until he was standing directly between me and the heavy, locked exit doors.

He didn't reach down to touch me. He didn't offer a hand, and he didn't look down at my neck. He simply stood there, an iron wall between me and the crowd, his posture utterly relaxed and completely lethal.

He smelled of cold mountain rain and crushed cedar.

Ryan looked Edgar Marsh dead in the face. His voice dropped lower, flat and dangerously quiet.

"I’ve sat through three hours of your pack’s trade negotiations," Ryan said, each word landing like an anvil. "And in all that time, I didn't realize Silverfang trained its healers to read neurological trauma through the soles of their boots."

Edgar’s thumb froze on the clasp. The color instantly drained from his cheeks. "Alpha Voss... this is an internal territorial—"

"Answer the question, Marsh," Ryan cut in, taking a single, measured step forward. The air in the lodge dropped ten degrees. "You're declaring a lethal brain bleed a fabrication. Are you prepared to stake your healer’s oath, your credentials, and your right hand before a Lycan Council tribunal that you made that diagnosis without touching her pulse once?"

Edgar swallowed. His eyes darted frantically toward Maverick, looking for a script that wasn't there.

"I—I was merely assessing the—"

"Touch the patient," Ryan commanded, his voice vibrating through the flagstones, "or I will personally snap your collarbone where you stand."
