Chapter 3

The narrow side corridor opened onto a railed gallery overlooking the ceremonial hall. The air up high was thick with heat, heavy with beeswax, sweet frankincense, and mating oils.

I leaned against the dark wooden railing, looking down. Maxine stood beside me, her breathing shallow, both hands clutching her tin of cookies against her chest.

Down on the dais, beneath hundreds of flickering candles, stood my husband.

Maverick wasn't wearing his dark Nighthollow Alpha regalia. He wore a Silverfang ceremonial cloak, heavy with grey fur and silver clasps across his broad shoulders. And beside him stood Selena Ortiz.

She wore an ivory silk gown. The neckline plunged, and the back dipped low, showing off her olive skin. I knew that cut. It was an exact replica of the gown I had worn to the Nighthollow Winter Solstice gala two years ago—the night Maverick had publicly declared I was the bedrock of his pack.

Except on Selena, the silk pulled tight across a swollen, rounded belly.

Maverick’s right hand rested flat against the curve of her stomach, his fingers splayed wide in proud, possessive ownership. His face was relaxed. His lips curved in a soft, satisfied smile—an expression I had spent five years of cold nights waiting to see directed at me.

Below them, an elderly Silverfang priest stood with an open leather ledger, intoning the preliminary bonding rites. His deep voice echoed through the vaulted room, praising the union of Nighthollow’s vigor with Silverfang’s southern borders.

Every piece of the puzzle slammed into place with sickening clarity.

The morning transfer. The burning fever he claimed was killing his mother’s rural pack.

He hadn't sent a single drop of my aura to Ohio. He had taken my rare healing power, pumped it into his own veins, and used it to inflate his personal scent—making himself smell impossibly strong, like an Alpha powerful enough to claim a second territory and father an heir with a new Luna.

My stolen power had paid for this room. It had paid for the white orchids. It had paid for the dress she wore.

"Maverick..." Maxine whimpered beside me, her voice breaking.

I didn't answer. I turned and walked toward the stairs.

The wooden steps groaned under the weight of my boots. I reached the ground floor, pushed open the double arched doors, and stepped straight into the center aisle.

The heavy thud of the doors swinging shut cut the priest off mid-sentence.

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the hall. Heads turned in the pews. Dozens of Silverfang elders and high-ranking warriors looked back, their grey witnessing robes rustling in the quiet.

I kept my chin up and walked forward.

Maverick froze on the dais. For a second, his eyes went wide. Then his pupils narrowed, his mind racing through calculations. The shock vanished, replaced by a cold, flat twitch of his eyebrows. He didn't look guilty. He looked annoyed—the way an executive looks when an intern interrupts a private board meeting.

Beside him, Selena didn't flinch. She tilted her chin up, resting both hands on her pregnant belly, looking down at me with sharp, smug satisfaction. She looked like a woman who believed the crown was already on her head.

Maverick took a single step down from the altar. He kept his hands relaxed at his sides, totally composed.

"Harper," he said. His voice carried across the silent room, smooth and even. "You shouldn't have driven out here in your state. You're exhausted."

I stopped ten feet from the base of the dais. "What is this, Maverick?"

He sighed, letting out a small, patient breath, as if I were being unreasonable.

"It's pack business," he said, keeping his tone calm and measured. "Nighthollow needed things you simply couldn't provide. We needed an heir. We needed an alliance to secure our western borders. We needed a future."

Every word hit like a slap, but my face didn't move.

"You agreed to forgo pups," I said, my voice low and steady. "You said it was to preserve my strength."

"And it did," he answered without missing a beat, speaking as if he were laying out a quarterly budget report. "You served your purpose well, Harper. Your healing stabilized our warriors for five years. But packs evolve. Your role as Luna was always strategic. It was never personal. You understood the job."

*The job.*

Five years of blood, sweat, and sleepless nights. Five years of pouring my spirit into his dying fighters until my own hands shook. Reduced to a temporary contract.

Inside my chest, something violent snapped.

The wolf that had slept beneath childhood suppressants—the wolf that was supposed to be completely drained from the morning transfer—rose with a sudden, vicious fury.

She didn't stay down. She lunged.

A deep, bone-shaking growl tore from my throat. It wasn't human. A raw shockwave of pure aura blasted outward from my skin, slamming into the air like a physical gust of wind. The heavy oak pews groaned. Along the stone walls, hundreds of cream candles shuddered, their flames flattening before flaring into tall, wild points of fire.

Several Silverfang warriors in the front row flinched, instinctively bracing their hands against the wood. Selena took a half-step back, her smirk slipping for a split second.

I planted my boots into the stone floor, breathing through the fire in my blood. I forced the tremor down, locking my eyes entirely on Maverick.

"If it was just pack business," I said, my voice slicing through the hall with razor precision, "then state it plainly. Tell the elders of Silverfang where the massive healing transfer you took from my chest at dawn actually went."

Maverick didn't blink. But his jaw shifted, locking hard and tight to the left.

He didn't speak.

The silence stretched across the vaulted hall, heavy and damning, and every single wolf in the room heard it.
