Luna's Escape from Betrayal

The silver light of the full moon bathed the forest in an ethereal glow as I raced through the underbrush, my silver-white paws barely touching the ground. My wolf, Maya, reveled in the freedom of the pack run, her joy momentarily eclipsing the constant ache in my chest. For these precious moments, I could forget what awaited me back at the pack house—the cold stares, the whispered insults, the empty bed. "Let's run faster," Maya urged within our shared consciousness. "Tonight feels different." I surrendered to her instinct, pushing forward ahead of the main group. The joint Moonridge-Silvermoon pack run was supposed to be a display of alliance and strength, but I knew my presence was merely tolerated. Five years as Luna of the Silvermoon Pack had taught me exactly where I stood with my mate. The thought of Cameron sent a familiar pang through my chest. My pup kicked inside me, responding to my distress, and I slowed my pace, protective instincts overriding Maya's desire to run. "Sorry, little one," I whispered internally, caressing my swollen belly with my consciousness.

Luna's Escape from Betrayal Chapter 1

The silver light of the full moon bathed the forest in an ethereal glow as I raced through the underbrush, my silver-white paws barely touching the ground. My wolf, Maya, reveled in the freedom of the pack run, her joy momentarily eclipsing the constant ache in my chest. For these precious moments, I could forget what awaited me back at the pack house—the cold stares, the whispered insults, the empty bed.

"Let's run faster," Maya urged within our shared consciousness. "Tonight feels different."

I surrendered to her instinct, pushing forward ahead of the main group.

That's when I caught it—Cameron's scent intertwined with another. Musky pine and... lavender. Victoria.

My body froze mid-stride, nearly tumbling over as I skidded to a halt at the edge of a small clearing. The sight before me turned my blood to ice.

Cameron's massive silver wolf was pressed against Victoria's sleek black form, their bodies entwined in an intimate display that violated everything sacred about a pack run. His teeth grazed her neck in a gesture that belonged only to mates—true mates. My mate. My Alpha.

A low, possessive growl rumbled from Cameron's throat, audible even from where I stood. Victoria's amber eyes found mine over his shoulder, her muzzle pulling back in what could only be described as a triumphant smirk.

Around us, wolves from both packs slowed, then awkwardly diverted their paths. Some averted their eyes in shame, others stared openly at the spectacle of an Alpha publicly betraying his Luna—his pregnant Luna—during a sacred pack run.

Maya howled in anguish inside me. "He can't do this! Not here! Not to us!"

But he could. And he had. For years.

I backed away, my legs trembling beneath me. The baby kicked again, harder this time, as if sensing my distress. With every ounce of dignity I could muster, I turned and padded silently back toward the pack house, alone.

---

"You embarrassed me tonight." Cameron's voice cut through the great hall like ice, his Alpha tone pressing down on my shoulders.

I stood before him, now in human form, wrapped in a simple dress I'd hastily pulled on after shifting back. My hands instinctively cradled my seven-month belly.

"I embarrassed you?" The words escaped before I could stop them, my voice barely above a whisper. "You were the one who—"

"Enough!" His command slammed into me, making my knees buckle. "Your place is not to question me, Isabella. Your place is to serve this pack as its Luna until I decide otherwise."

The great hall wasn't empty. Three visiting Alphas from smaller neighboring packs sat at the long table, their expressions a mixture of discomfort and pity. Victoria stood at Cameron's side, her hand possessively resting on his arm, her blood-red dress a stark contrast to my simple gray one.

"The Alphas need refreshments," Cameron said dismissively. "See to it."

I felt the weight of everyone's stares as tears threatened to spill. "Cameron, please. We need to talk about what happened. About our baby—"

"Our baby will be fine," he cut me off, his eyes cold. "Now do as you're told while I escort Victoria to my quarters. We have pack business to discuss."

Victoria's lips curled into a smile as she leaned into him. "Don't wait up, Luna," she purred, the title a mockery on her lips.

I watched as my mate—my Alpha, my supposed protector—led another woman toward the stairs that led to our private chambers. My trembling plea hung unanswered in the air between us.

---

The moon was high when I slipped past the boundary markers of Silvermoon territory, my heart pounding in my chest. Maya was unusually quiet, sensing the gravity of what I was about to do.

"You're sure about this?" she finally asked as I approached the ancient oak that marked the meeting point.

"What choice do we have?" I replied, one hand protectively covering my belly. "For our pup. For us."

A shadow detached itself from the darkness of the forest. Tall, imposing, with eyes that gleamed like silver in the moonlight. Ryker, the infamous enforcer of the Blackstone Lycan family.

"Luna Isabella." His voice was as cold as his reputation. "You've considered our proposition?"

I nodded, unable to trust my voice.

"The terms are simple," he continued, producing a scroll from within his black jacket. "You will be mated to Prince Kaelen Blackstone in a blessed ceremony. In return, the Blackstone family will ensure the complete destruction of Alpha Cameron Sterling and the Silvermoon Pack."

My baby kicked hard, as if in protest or perhaps approval. I placed a steadying hand on my stomach.

"And my child?" I asked, finding my voice at last.

"Will be protected as if it were of Blackstone blood," Ryker replied without hesitation. "The Prince may be in a coma, but his family honors its commitments."

I took the scroll with shaking hands, the magnitude of what I was about to do crashing over me. This wasn't just escape—it was revenge. Cold, calculated revenge against the man who had spent five years systematically destroying me.

With a small silver knife Ryker provided, I pricked my finger and pressed it to the bottom of the contract. The blood glowed momentarily before sinking into the parchment.

"It is done," Ryker said, taking back the scroll. "You belong to the Blackstones now."

As I turned to go, a strange sense of calm settled over me. For the first time in years, I felt something other than despair.

I felt powerful.

The Pierre Hotel smelled like gardenias and old money. I stood just inside the ballroom entrance and let the scene wash over me. Crystal chandeliers threw soft light across a hundred faces I didn't recognize and a dozen I did. Women in gowns that cost more than cars. Men in tuxedos that fit like they were born wearing them. Waiters gliding between clusters of conversation with trays of champagne so pale it looked like liquid gold. Six years ago, I would have been one of those waiters. I took a glass from a passing tray and didn't drink it. My steel-gray gown was custom Valentino, fitted so precisely it felt like armor. It cost more than my entire first-year scholarship at Columbia.

Five years. That was one thousand, eight hundred, and twenty-five days of waking up cold. Today was our anniversary. Not that anyone in the Blood Moon Pack would be celebrating. To them, this wasn't the day their Alpha and Luna were united; it was the day the "real" Luna ran away, and the spare was shoved into a white dress to stop a war. I sat at my vanity, the enchanted glass reflecting a face that looked too pale, too tired for twenty-one. My hand drifted up to my neck, hovering over the smooth, unmarked skin there. A dull, throbbing ache pulsed beneath my fingertips—mate sickness. It was a low-level hum of pain that never went away, the physical consequence of a bond that had been legally recognized but never sealed with a bite. "Happy anniversary, Leona," I whispered to the empty room.
