Chapter 5

She woke up in bed alone, the alpha scents still thick in the air. The scents were foreign, yet it settled deep into her bones as if it was something her omega had been familiar with for years. Nothing had yet to make her scared, so she didn't bother panicking. The alphas claimed she was their mate and treated her nicely. She just hoped that the treatment would continue.

As she stretched her arms out, she felt the warmth on the bedsheets. They had just gotten up. She couldn't remember a time when she slept so well. The alpha scents and presence had given her the ultimate beauty of sleep. With bleary eyes, Anastasia saw Leo Sitting on the desk in the far corner of the room, eyeing some papers. He looked so soft in the plain green garment, tight around his figure, but the material was thin. At that moment, he didn't look like a powerful leader, but a normal alpha doing some work. At the sound of Anastasia's movements, his eyes snapped up and gifted the omega with a warm smile. Anastasia’s thoughts were false. Such an alpha could never be plain, not with such a face and aura. "My sun, you finally are awake," Leo Stood up and walked towards her, leaning against one bedpost. The nickname was new. Sun. Anastasia could only guess that it was a reference to her hair, she wanted to assume further that it was because she was their mate and therefore something they relied on to live just like the ball in the sky, but she couldn't think of herself so highly. "Today we will teach you about our pack."

"Okay," Anastasia said, sheepishly moving off the bed. That was something simple. The omega looked forward to learning about this massive pack and figuring out if the rumors of such a peaceful pack were true.

She stood in front of the alpha awkwardly. What was she supposed to do now? The rules that an omega should follow in the high household were still ambiguous to her. "Go freshen up, I'll get you breakfast," a gigantic hand on her back guided her toward the bathroom. She followed mutely, Leo’s touch making her limp. Her omega seemed to love the alpha so much. "Is there anything you would like?" "Oh no," Anastasia called back. She didn't want to be greedy.

She still didn't know what the cuisine was like in this pack. Everything she had seen the previous night had differed from what she was used to. "Anything is fine." Stepping into the bathroom, she didn't realize how big it actually was.

There had been a curtain the previous day operating the room, but it was now pulled back. The small tub she had used the other night looked dwarfistic compared to the pond-sized tub near it. The larger capacity tub was filled to the brim with petals and oils, just like yesterday. She tentatively steps in, feeling steps beneath her feet she descends further into the tub, the water stopping below her chest. Wow!

She didn't want to keep Leo Waiting, so she cleansed herself quickly, stepping in and stepping out in seconds. As she drew herself out, Anastasia mourned the water, pitying it for not getting the proper usage it should. She promised herself that she'd utilize it to its full capacity some other day.

Anastasia skipped out of the bathroom into where they ate the previous day, Leo was already there with an assortment of fruits and pastries. She abruptly stopped her happy movements, unsure if it was disrespectful. The alpha just looked up and smiled at her, finding it amusing. She relaxed just a little.

"Eat, my sun," Leo gestured to sit. She bowed her head politely and made a move to go past the alpha, only for her arm to be gently pulled back and guided onto the alpha's lap.

"Oh," she exclaimed as she looked at the alpha, who was grinning at her. The omega shield away from the gaze but not the touches, the large hands felt so warm against her body and it felt so nice.

Moving away may be seen as disrespectful, and he didn't want the alpha to be hurt by her actions when everything for her so far had been done with care, she didn't want to anyway.

She was maneuvered so that she was in a better position to eat, the position very relaxing. "Eat," a gentle kiss was placed on the back of her head, arms tightening around her," there is so much you need to be told." Anastasia's eyes fluttered shut at such an affectionate move. Such kisses felt more personal than a normal kiss. It still baffled her why she was receiving such affection. She followed the order and ate diligently, the alpha lounging behind her the whole time. Her presence made her eat faster, he was a busy man and Anastasia felt like wasting his time would not be good.

The tinted glass of the limousine was cool against my forehead, a sharp contrast to the fire burning in my veins. Outside, the familiar trees of the Shadow Creek territory blurred past—oaks and pines that had once witnessed my happiest childhood memories and my darkest nightmares. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, not out of fear, but anticipation. Beside me, a large, warm hand covered my trembling one. I turned to look at Thatcher. My mate. My King. His golden eyes, usually so fierce they could bring Alphas to their knees, were soft as they studied my face. "You don't have to do this, Malia," he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the car's plush interior. "I can burn this pack to the ground without you ever stepping foot on this cursed soil." I squeezed his hand, drawing strength from the bond that hummed between us—a connection far deeper, far purer than the twisted tether I had once shared with Derek.

The crate of wine bottles dug into my palms as I stumbled after the other servants through the grand entrance of the Silver Lake Pack's ceremonial hall. My arms screamed in protest, muscles burning from the two-hour journey carrying supplies that should have been transported by cart. But Omegas didn't get carts. Omegas got splinters and contempt. "Move faster, Anderson!" Beta Thomas's voice cracked like a whip behind me. "You think the Wedding of the Century waits for useless baggage?" I bit down on my tongue hard enough to taste copper. Three years ago, he would have called me "Miss Estelle" and bowed his head. Now I was just Anderson—not even worth a first name. The Silver Lake Pack's neutral territory was breathtaking, all marble columns and crystal chandeliers that caught the afternoon light like captured stars. Under different circumstances, I might have appreciated the beauty.

"Kneel." The command drops through the chandelier-lit ballroom like a steel blade. The music dies, leaving only the clinking of crystal glasses and the heavy, suffocating scent of winter frost—the signature pheromones of our Alpha. Standing at the center of the marble floor is my flawless, pure-blood sister, beaming in her custom engagement gown. Sitting on the velvet throne is Kaelen, her soon-to-be mate and the most ruthless ruler this pack has seen in centuries. And then there is me, the half-breed stain of the family, holding a silver tray of champagne, frozen in the dead silence. A low murmur ripples through the crowd. The elders sneer, whispering about how the Alpha is finally putting the trash in her place. My sister steps back, giving me a pitying look, fully expecting me to drop to the floor in absolute humiliation. I stare at Kaelen’s polished leather shoes. He leans forward, resting his chin on his knuckles, his ice-blue eyes piercing straight through my ribs. The pack thinks this is a display of power to honor his pure-blood bride. They don’t see the way his pupils dilate, swallowing the iris entirely. They don’t know that the bruise hidden high on my left thigh perfectly matches the grip of his heavy hand. Because exactly twelve hours ago, in the pitch black of my attic bedroom, he whispered that exact same command against my collarbone. My knees hit the cold marble. The silver tray rattles as I lower my head. Kaelen slowly uncrosses his legs, his boot stopping a fraction of an inch from my ruined dress. He leans down, the scent of frost wrapping around my throat, and his lips brush the shell of my ear. "Good girl."
