Chapter 2

For Tiffany, he could trample on seven years of our marriage without a second thought.

"Clara?" Alberto's voice pulled me back to the present. "What’s on your mind?"

I looked at the man I had once loved so deeply. Now, all I saw in his eyes was cold calculation and rank hypocrisy.

"I was just thinking," I said calmly, "since our marriage is 'dead in all but name,' we should probably make it official."

Alberto froze. "What?"

"I said, let's go to the law firm and sign the divorce papers," I repeated, my voice even. "That way, you and Tiffany can have your engagement party without any messy complications."

Panic flashed across Tiffany's face, quickly replaced by a greedy excitement. "Can... can we really do that?"

"Of course," I said with a faint smile. "Since your love is so fated, we should honor it."

Alberto opened his mouth to object, but under Tiffany's expectant gaze, he could only grit his teeth and nod. "If… if you insist."

"I insist," I replied, my voice unwavering.

I scanned the faces of the other board members. They all looked profoundly uncomfortable. Marcus refused to meet my gaze, Aunt Eleanor was wringing her hands, and the others stared intently at the expensive Persian rug.

So, they had all known.

They knew about Alberto and Tiffany, knew this was a charade, and not one of them had breathed a word.

They valued the capital I brought to the family, but they couldn't give a damn about the woman behind it.

"Meeting adjourned." I turned and strode toward the door.

"I'll go pack my things. I'll be out of the Vaughn Estate by tomorrow."

"Wait, Clara," Alberto called, catching up to me. "You don't have to leave. We're still business partners..."

I stopped and turned to face him.

"Alberto, your new matriarch needs space to grow into her role. I'd only be in her way."

"But the group still needs you as a social consultant..."

"Isn't that the foundation chairwoman's job now?" I gestured toward Tiffany, who was already perched in my former seat, clutching the documents. "Or does your 'true love' lack that particular skill set?"

Alberto's face darkened, but Tiffany just smirked. "Don't worry, I'll learn. How hard can socializing be?"

I nodded. "Excellent. Then there's no problem at all."

I pushed open the conference room door, leaving them to the heavy silence I’d created.

As I walked down the hall, a single thought brought a smile to my lips.

He had no idea the annual charity gala was just seven days away. And those high-profile guests? They only attended on a personal invitation from me, Clara Beaumont.

"Mr. Vaughn, Ms. Beaumont, are you certain you wish to dissolve your marriage?" the lead partner of the law firm asked, his voice grave. "This decision is irreversible."

Standing in the law firm's solemn conference room, I nodded calmly.

"I'm certain."

Alberto stood beside me, his expression unreadable. On the way here, he had suddenly grabbed my arm.

"Clara, do we really have to go this far?"

His voice held a flicker of panic. "Maybe we can reconsider..."

"Didn't you say your feelings for me were gone?" I retorted. "A divorce should be a relief for you."

He hesitated, then quickly regained his composure. "Right… yes. I'm just worried you'll have a hard time adjusting."

What a terrible actor.

And now, in front of the lawyer, he was putting on another performance, trying to guilt me.

"Clara, do you remember our wedding?" Alberto gazed into my eyes. "That night, under the stars, we promised to be together forever..."

"Of course I remember," I cut him off. "I also remember what you told my father."

Alberto's expression soured. "What?"

"You said, 'This marriage is important. Clara's background and social talents will help me solidify my position as CEO.'" I repeated his words verbatim. "Did you really think I didn't know?"

The lawyer glanced at Alberto, a flicker of disappointment in his eyes.

"That... that was..." Alberto stammered.

"The truth," I finished for him. "And now you've found someone who serves your interests better, correct?"

Alberto opened his mouth to argue, but I had already turned to the lawyer.

"Please begin."

The proceedings were swift.

When the last page was signed, I felt a heavy weight lift from my chest. Seven years of marriage, gone in a flash of ink.
