My Daughter Gave Her Dad's Mistress My Seat—So I Canceled Her Wedding Chapter 1

Twelve days before the wedding, the Grand Ballroom of the Reed Grand Hotel smelled of fresh white lilies and floor polish.

I walked past the crystal chandeliers toward the coordinator’s table, holding the leather binder that held six months of vendor receipts, catering contracts, and floor plans. Every line bore my signature. Every deposit had come from my account.

All that remained was signing off on the final seating chart.

The hotel’s event manager, Marcus, looked up from his clipboard with a tight, apologetic smile.

"Mrs. Sterling," he said, clearing his throat. "Sophie mentioned she might meet you here."

"She’s running a few minutes late," I said, setting my bag down. "Let’s take a look at the head tables first. I want to make sure the sightlines to the stage are clear."

Marcus hesitated, his hands lingering over the brass display stand. "There were a few last-minute revisions submitted this morning. From your husband’s office."

"Grant?" I frowned slightly. Grant hadn’t attended a single tasting or floral consult. "He told me he didn’t care about table placement as long as the bar stayed open."

Marcus stepped aside, offering an uneasy nod.

I glanced down at Table One, the polished mahogany table directly facing the altar platform. The hand-calligraphed cards were laid out in their silver holders.

*Father of the Bride: Grant Sterling.*

Directly beside him sat another card, etched in heavy cream stock.

*Mother of the Bride: Vanessa Cole.*

The air in my chest thinned out completely.

Vanessa Cole was Grant’s executive vice president of marketing. She had been a fixture at company dinners for two years, always poised, always laughing a beat too long at his dry jokes.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dead and quiet. "Where is my seat?"

Marcus didn’t look at me. He pointed a trembling pen toward the far corner of the ballroom, right next to the service swing door leading to the dishwashing station.

"Table Fourteen," he murmured. "The vendor table. For the photographer, the DJ, and the day-of coordinators."

My name was there, printed on plain white cardstock without calligraphy: *Caroline Sterling.*

Footsteps clicked against the polished marble floor.

Sophie swept into the room wearing her white rehearsal dress, her hair in loose curls. She held an iced coffee in one hand and her phone in the other, tapping rapidly on the screen before glancing up.

When she saw where I was standing, her stride slowed for half a second. Then her jaw set.

"You’re early, Mom," she said, setting her cup on an empty linen-covered table.

I picked up the silver cardholder from Table One. The heavy card felt cold between my fingers.

"What is this, Sophie?"

Sophie looked at the card, then let out a soft, impatient sigh. "I was going to talk to you tonight over dinner. You weren't supposed to see the chart until after we spoke."

"Vanessa Cole is listed as the mother of the bride," I said, keeping my gaze locked on hers. "And I'm seated behind the lighting technicians."

"It's just seating, Mom. Don't overreact."

"Overreact?" The word tasted like metal in my mouth. "This is your wedding. I am your mother."

"Dad asked for it," she said, crossing her arms defensively. "They’ve been together for almost a year. Vanessa has been really helpful with the public relations side of the wedding, and Dad’s business partners are all sitting at Table One. It would look completely bizarre if she was stuck at a random table in the back."

The room seemed to shrink.

"A year?" I asked. My fingers tightened around the card. "Grant has been with her for a year?"

"Look, I didn't want to get involved in your marriage issues," Sophie snapped, shifting her weight. "I only found out four months ago."

Four months ago.

Four months ago, Sophie had hugged me at our kitchen island, crying happy tears when I told her I’d cover the sixty-thousand-dollar balance on the venue buyout so she could have the ballroom for an entire weekend.

"You knew four months ago," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "And you didn't say a word."

"What was I supposed to do, Mom? Ruin my engagement?" Sophie stepped closer, lowering her voice, though Marcus had already retreated to the far end of the room. "Dad made a promise. If the wedding goes smoothly—if his clients see a stable, united family and the press coverage looks right—he’s transferring the title of the Lincoln Park townhouse to me and Liam right after the reception. Fully paid off."

She looked at me without an ounce of shame. There was only raw calculation in her eyes.

"Do you know what real estate prices are right now?" she continued. "Liam and I could never afford that on our own. Dad is setting us up for the rest of our lives. I’m not going to throw that away because you and he grew apart."

I looked at my daughter.

I had carried her at nineteen. I had worked through night school while Grant built his firm, living on instant noodles so she could have ballet lessons and private tutoring. She wasn't an innocent bride caught in the middle of a messy divorce.

She had priced my dignity, negotiated the exchange rate, and sold me out for four walls and a deed.

"And Table Fourteen?" I asked. "Was that part of the deal too?"

Sophie looked away, picking at her manicure. "Dad thought it would be less tense if you weren't in his direct line of sight. And... we talked about the photography."

"The photography."

"Please don’t make this about you, Mom," Sophie pleaded, her tone turning whiny and aggrieved. "The primary family portraits are going in the lifestyle section of *Chicago Social*. If you’re standing next to Dad, it’s going to look messy and confusing after the separation goes public. It’s better for everyone if you just sit back, enjoy the dinner, and let Vanessa handle the hosting duties. We can take a private photo together before the ceremony."

*Please don’t make this about you.*

A strange, crystalline calm settled over my chest. The suffocating pain that had gripped my throat simply vanished, replaced by an absolute, icy stillness.

"I see," I said.

Sophie visibly relaxed, letting out a breath. "Thank you. I knew you’d understand once I explained the townhouse situation. It’s an investment in my future."

I didn't answer. I reached into my purse, pulled out my phone, and dialed Marcus’s direct office extension.

He answered on the second ring from across the ballroom. "Mrs. Sterling?"

"Marcus," I said clearly, not breaking eye contact with Sophie. "I need to make an immediate administrative change to the master account."

Sophie frowned. "Mom, what are you doing?"

"As the sole primary signatory on the master contract," I spoke into the receiver, "I am revoking all secondary signing privileges for Grant Sterling and Sophie Sterling. Effective right now."

Marcus’s voice was tense. "Understood, ma'am. That means any additional billing or order modifications must come exclusively through you."

"Correct. Cancel all pending approvals that were added in the last seventy-two hours unless they carry my physical signature."

"Mom!" Sophie lunged forward, grabbing my forearm. "What are you talking about? Hang up!"

I pulled my arm back, stepping out of her reach. "Thank you, Marcus. Please apply the block immediately."

I ended the call.

Before Sophie could speak, her phone buzzed in her hand. She glanced down at the screen. Her eyes widened, her face instantly draining of color.

"What is this?" she gasped, her voice trembling. "Vanessa just texted me. The front desk just declined her upgrade to the Presidential Suite. She was supposed to check in tonight with her styling team!"

"The suite upgrade was twenty-four hundred dollars a night," I said evenly. "Added to the master account under Grant’s name yesterday afternoon. Since he no longer has billing authorization, the hotel declined the charge."

"You can't do that!" Sophie shrieked, the composure she had worn like armor shattering in seconds. "Vanessa's hair and makeup crew are arriving at five! Dad’s partners are coming up for drinks before the welcome dinner! You’re humiliating them!"

"Then your father can put down his own credit card," I said.

"He can't!" Sophie’s voice hit a frantic pitch, panic finally breaking through. "His liquid accounts are frozen until the quarter closes on Friday! That's why everything was routed through your trust account! Mom, call Marcus back right now and fix this!"

I looked down at the silver cardholder still resting in my palm.

*Mother of the Bride: Vanessa Cole.*

I set it down slowly on the edge of the linen, right next to her half-melted iced coffee.

"If I’m not your mother at this wedding," I said, "why am I paying for it?"
