Chapter 14

Mila stopped trusting quiet.

‎Silence used to feel peaceful. Now it felt like a warning. Every calm moment carried the sense that something was being set into place, slowly and carefully, where she couldn't see it.

‎After what Mara confessed, nothing felt stable anymore.

‎Mara stayed home from school for days. Ethan barely spoke to anyone. Teachers acted tense. Police presence increased. Yet Lena remained invisible, slipping through every crack like smoke.

‎Adrian refused to leave Mila's side.

‎Not because he didn't trust her, but because he didn't trust the world around her.

‎You don't have to walk me everywhere Mila said one afternoon, trying to lighten the mood.

‎He gave a small smile. Humor me.

‎They walked through the hallway together, fingers brushing, not quite holding hands. There was comfort in the closeness, but also fear. Love felt fragile now, like glass that could shatter with one wrong move.

‎That night, Mila received another message.

‎I see you forgave her.

‎You forgive so easily.

‎That makes you predictable.

‎Mila stared at the screen, heart pounding.

‎She didn't respond.

‎Instead, she showed Adrian.

‎She's testing you he said. Trying to see what still hurts.

‎Mila swallowed. Everything still hurts.

‎The next day, Mila was called to the guidance office.

‎The counselor smiled gently. We just want to check in.

‎Mila sat slowly. About what.

‎About the stress you've been under. And about Adrian.

‎Her chest tightened.

‎What about him.

‎The counselor hesitated. Some concerns have been raised.

‎Concerns by who.

‎Anonymous reports.

‎Mila's breath caught.

‎They say Adrian has been isolating you. That he's controlling who you talk to.

‎That's not true Mila said immediately.

‎The counselor nodded calmly. We're not accusing. Just observing.

‎Mila left the office shaking.

‎Someone was twisting the story.

‎Again.

‎By lunch, the rumors were everywhere.

‎Mila confronted Adrian behind the gym.

‎Someone's trying to turn them against you she said.

‎He clenched his jaw. I know.

‎She told people I was controlling her. That I wouldn't let her have friends.

‎Mila's stomach dropped.

‎She's repeating the pattern.

‎That afternoon, Adrian was called out of class.

‎When he returned, his face was pale.

‎What happened Mila asked quietly.

‎He hesitated. They warned me.

‎Warned you about what.

‎About staying away from you.

‎Mila's chest burned. That's insane.

‎Adrian's voice dropped. If this keeps going, they'll force it.

‎Fear wrapped tight around her heart.

‎That night, Mila received a message that made her blood run cold.

‎She stared at the screen, hands trembling.

‎This was the trap.

‎She knew it.

‎And yet.

‎Adrian sat beside her, unaware.

‎Mila looked at him, memorizing the way his hair fell into his eyes, the way he leaned closer without thinking.

‎She loved him.

‎That was the weakness Lena was exploiting.

‎The next day, Mila didn't tell anyone where she was going.

‎She left school early, heart pounding, following the address sent to her phone. It led to the old railway platform on the edge of town. The place was abandoned, rusted tracks stretching into nothing.

‎Lena stood there, calm as ever.

‎You came Lena said softly.

‎Mila stopped a few feet away. You threatened him.

‎Lena smiled. I warned you.

‎What do you want.

‎Lena stepped closer. I want you to choose.

‎Choose what.

‎Between him and peace.

‎Mila laughed bitterly. You think peace comes from you.

‎Lena's eyes darkened. I think chaos comes from him.

‎That's a lie.

‎Is it Lena asked. Or are you just afraid to look.

‎She pulled out her phone and showed Mila messages.

‎Screenshots.

‎Anonymous reports. Complaints. Signed with Adrian's name.

‎Mila's heart pounded.

‎He didn't do this she said.

‎Lena tilted her head. But will everyone believe that.

‎Mila clenched her fists. Stop.

‎Lena smiled. Break up with him. Publicly. Convince everyone he's the problem. And this ends.

‎Mila's voice shook. You're blackmailing me.

‎I'm giving you an escape Lena replied. One that doesn't end with him expelled or arrested.

‎Tears burned Mila's eyes.

‎You don't love me she whispered. You just want control.

‎Lena's smile cracked. Control is love when no one else stays.

‎Mila shook her head. You need help.

‎Lena stepped back. You have until tomorrow.

‎She turned and walked away.

‎That evening, Mila sat alone in her room, shaking.

‎Her phone buzzed.

‎Adrian.

‎Can we talk.

‎She swallowed.

‎He stood outside her house minutes later.

‎They sat on the steps, side by side.

‎Something's wrong he said quietly.

‎Mila stared at the ground. People think you're hurting me.

‎He exhaled. I know.

‎She turned to him, tears spilling. They're trying to make me choose.

‎Adrian froze. Choose what.

‎Between you and everything else.

‎He was silent for a long moment.

‎Then he said softly. If choosing me destroys you, I won't let that happen.

‎Mila's heart shattered.

‎I don't want to lose you she whispered.

‎He took her hands. Then don't lose yourself for me.

‎She leaned into him, crying quietly.

‎Above them, the sky darkened.

‎And somewhere nearby, Lena watched.

‎Waiting to see which way love would break.
