Love Betrayal Unveiled Chapter 1

The dinner had been going perfectly fine until Remy's eyes locked on my phone screen.

I'd been scrolling through our photo gallery, showing Calvin and Remy some pictures from our weekend trip to the lake. Then I'd excused myself to use the bathroom, leaving my phone unlocked on the kitchen counter.

"Marina!" Calvin's voice cracked with panic. "Remy found the photos."

My stomach dropped as I rushed back to the kitchen. Remy stood there, my phone in her hand, her face twisted in disgust as she scrolled through the folder I'd labeled "Insurance."

"What the hell is this?" Her voice was dangerously quiet.

I glanced at Calvin, expecting him to explain, to defend me. Instead, he looked like he wanted to disappear into the floor.

"It's not what it looks like," I said, reaching for my phone.

Remy jerked away. "Really? Because it looks like you made my best friend take naked pictures as some kind of sick control tactic."

"They're just photos," I said, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. "Lots of couples do stuff like this."

"Not normal couples," Remy spat, her sweet facade crumbling. "This is exactly what I mean about you, Marina. You're so insecure, so controlling. You can't even trust Calvin without some twisted form of... what? Blackmail?"

Calvin finally spoke, his voice weak. "Maybe we should all just calm down."

"Calm down?" Remy's eyes widened. "She doesn't trust you! She thinks you need to be controlled!"

I stared at Calvin, waiting for him to take my side, to tell Remy she was overreacting. Instead, he ran his hand through his hair and mumbled something about how "we all have different ways of expressing love."

---

The next day, I decided to work from Café Luna. The familiar hum of conversation and clinking cups usually helped me focus.

"Marina Dixon."

I looked up to find Remy standing over my table, two coffees in hand. Her smile didn't reach her eyes.

"I thought we should talk," she said, sliding into the seat across from me.

Before I could respond, she'd already started speaking, her voice carrying across the café.

"It's really sad when someone is so insecure that they need to manipulate and control their partner."

I felt eyes turning toward us. A woman at the next table glanced over, then whispered something to her friend.

"I'm not doing this here," I said quietly, trying to pack up my laptop.

"Oh, but I think we should," Remy's voice rose higher. "Everyone should know what kind of person you really are."

She knocked one of the coffees over, deliberately letting it spill across my keyboard. I gasped as the hot liquid seeped into my laptop.

"Oops," she said with mock concern. "I'm so clumsy."

I reached for my bag, desperate to salvage my work files. That's when I saw it—the hammer tucked into her purse.

"Is that for... home repairs?" I asked incredulously.

Something flashed in her eyes. "You never know when you might need to fix something."

She grabbed my wrist, yanking my hand onto the table. Before I could react, she brought the hammer down.

The pain was immediate and blinding. I screamed as something cracked in my wrist.

"Remy!" Someone shouted from across the café.

She stepped back, her eyes wide with fake innocence. "She attacked me! I was just defending myself!"

---

"Calvin," I sobbed into the phone. "Please come. She hurt me."

I could hear the panic in his voice. "What happened? Where are you?"

"Café Luna. Please hurry."

Twenty minutes later, Calvin burst through the door. Relief flooded through me until I saw his eyes dart past me to where Remy sat in the corner, tears streaming down her face.

"Calvin," I called, holding up my bleeding hand. "I need you."

But he was already moving toward Remy. He knelt beside her, wrapping his arms around her shaking shoulders.

"It's okay," he murmured. "I'm here now."

"Calvin," I said again, my voice breaking. "She hit me with a hammer."

He looked up, his expression torn. "Marina, you provoked her. You can't just go around taking pictures like that."

"She's bleeding," I said, staring at my wrist in disbelief.

Remy sobbed louder. "She came at me with her laptop. I was scared."

Calvin stroked her hair. "It's okay. I believe you."

In that moment, watching him comfort her while my hand throbbed with pain, everything became crystal clear.

"Calvin," I said quietly. "Which one of us are you choosing right now?"

He didn't answer. He didn't need to.

I picked up my broken laptop and walked out of the café, leaving behind the man who would always choose someone else over me.
