Chapter 2

That evening, pepperoni and melted cheese smothered the lavender scent of our kitchen.

Theo shoved away the bowl of vegetable soup I had left warming on the stove. “I don’t want green stuff.”

Lauren’s voice chirped from his tablet. “Pizza has tomato sauce, so it practically counts as a vegetable. Don’t tell your mom.”

Daniel loosened his tie on the living-room sofa. “Let him enjoy dinner, Maya. Today was stressful enough.”

I looked at the greasy pizza box, then at Theo’s medical backpack abandoned beside a pile of aquarium toys. The rescue inhaler lay on the floor beneath a flashing robot.

“Put the inhaler in the front pocket,” I told Theo.

He turned up the tablet volume.

Daniel gave me the patient smile he used with difficult clients. “If you drop this ridiculous fight, I’ll pay for your Boston infectious-disease conference next month. Consider it an apology for the scheduling mix-up.”

“My department is already funding the conference.”

His smile slipped. He had not known because he had stopped asking about my work years ago.

I opened my tote and took out three translucent folders. From the refrigerator, I removed the laminated allergy chart, the medication schedule, and Daniel’s gastritis diet plan.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

“Ending the unpaid management contract.” I placed the sheets in the first folder. “Theo’s pharmacy account now sends refill notices to both parents. His school and pediatrician have your number. You will attend the medical training session tomorrow at nine.”

Daniel stood. “Put those back.”

I removed a larger sheet covered in ventilation diagrams. “These are my preliminary safety notes for Vance Biomedical Construction’s laboratory bids. They are my intellectual property. I am taking them with me.”

He crossed the room. “You cannot take company documents.”

“I created them on my personal computer before your company incorporated them into its plans. My attorney has the source files and timestamps.”

“Attorney?”

I laid a separation agreement on the marble island.

Theo’s tablet went silent. Daniel read the heading twice.

“This is a tantrum,” he said at last. “You are angry about a field trip.”

“I am responding to seven years of being treated as invisible labor.”

“You think you can walk away with my company’s trade secrets?”

“My research is not your trade secret.”

He slapped his palm against the counter. Theo flinched. “If you leave, I will freeze every joint account before you reach the end of the block.”

“I transferred my salary into a separate account this afternoon. The agreement preserves every marital asset for disclosure. Move money now, and the court will see it.”

Daniel’s face darkened. “You have been planning this.”

“I started planning when I saw another woman registered as my son’s mother.”

“I will fight you for custody.”

“You should.” I slid the allergy-course registration toward him. “A father asking for parenting time should know how to use an auto-injector.”

“Stop yelling!” Theo screamed.

He scrambled off his chair, knocked over two plastic robots, and hugged the whale backpack against his chest.

“You ruin everything,” he cried at me. “Aunt Lauren makes Daddy happy. I hate you!”

Daniel went still. For one terrible second, satisfaction flickered across his face. He expected me to retreat, apologize, and restore the familiar order.

Instead, I crouched several feet from Theo.

“You are allowed to be angry,” I said. “You are not allowed to be cruel.”

His chin trembled.

“I love you. Leaving this house does not end that. But love does not mean I stay where people erase me.”

“Are you taking my toys?”

“No. They are yours. The whale bag is yours too, and the card inside the left strap can save your life. Bring it whenever you leave home.”

“Are you taking me?”

The question cracked through my composure. I kept my voice steady. “Tonight you stay with Dad. Tomorrow, lawyers will help us make a safe schedule. I will call before bedtime and see you as soon as the adults agree.”

Daniel stepped between us. “You are not calling him from some hotel. If you walk out, you walk out for good.”

I rose. “Do not make promises the law will not let you keep.”

I took the two suitcases from the hall closet. Beside the door, I placed my house key, gate remote, and wedding ring in a padded envelope. I wrote Daniel’s name across the front.

The taxi waiting outside belonged to a licensed service my attorney had recommended. The driver loaded my bags while rain silvered the driveway.

Daniel followed me onto the porch. “Where will you go?”

“Somewhere my name is still on the door.”

“Maya, be reasonable.” Fear had finally replaced his anger. “The hospital plans, the house, Theo—we can discuss all of it tomorrow.”

“You had years to discuss it.”

I got into the back seat. As the taxi pulled away, my phone lit with an email from Harbor Family Law confirming an emergency consultation at eight the next morning.

Behind me, Daniel stood in the open doorway with the envelope in his hand. Theo watched from the window, the blue whale pressed to the glass.

I did not look away from him until the house disappeared around the corner.

The taxi took me to a furnished studio near the hospital. It was smaller than our bedroom, but the lease and key were in my name. Before unpacking, I opened the parenting app my attorney had recommended and invited Daniel to join. I uploaded Theo’s medical plan, the training appointment, and a request for a video call.

At eight thirty, Theo appeared on my screen in dinosaur pajamas. Daniel hovered behind him until I asked him to give us privacy.

“Did you leave because I said I hated you?” Theo asked.

“No. Adults decide where they can live safely and respectfully. Your words hurt, but you did not cause the separation.”

“Will you come to school tomorrow?”

“I will meet you at the gate.”

He made me promise twice. When the call ended, I wrote the promise into the shared calendar. Then I unpacked my restoration-free, glitter-free, silent little room and slept beneath a ceiling no one else controlled.
