Chapter 3

Four days after I left, the emergency department doors burst open beneath Daniel’s hand.

“He can’t breathe!” he shouted.

He carried Theo against his chest. My son’s cheeks were swollen, hives climbed his throat, and every breath came as a thin whistle. Lauren stumbled behind them clutching an open bottle of liquid antihistamine.

I was finishing an infectious-disease consult thirty feet away. Training took over before grief could.

“Anaphylaxis,” I called. “Pediatric bay four. Epinephrine now.”

Dr. Evan Miller and two nurses met Daniel at the stretcher. One nurse cut away Theo’s sweatshirt while the other delivered intramuscular epinephrine and fitted an oxygen mask over his face.

“What did he eat?” Evan asked.

“Pasta,” Daniel said. “Lauren made dinner. The sauce was imported. We didn’t know it contained cashews.”

Evan pointed at the bottle in Lauren’s hand. “Is that all you gave him?”

“He had hives, so I gave him two spoonfuls,” she said. “The label says allergy relief.”

“Antihistamines do not stop anaphylaxis. Where was his auto-injector?”

Daniel’s gaze dropped to the floor.

“In the backpack,” I said. “Where is it?”

Lauren’s mouth opened, but no answer came.

Theo’s oxygen monitor alarmed. Evan ordered a second dose of epinephrine, IV fluids, steroids, and continuous nebulized medication. The team moved with controlled speed. I stayed near the foot of the bed, close enough to answer questions but far enough not to interfere.

“Maya.” Daniel grabbed my sleeve. “Tell them about the delayed reaction he had last year.”

“It is in his chart.” I pulled free. “Unlike the manual you left in his bag.”

Lauren began crying. “I was only trying to cook something special.”

“Leave the treatment bay,” Evan told her. “Now.”

She looked to Daniel for protection. He did not meet her eyes.

Theo’s breathing eased after the second injection. His oxygen level climbed from eighty-four to ninety-two, then ninety-six. The swelling around his mouth began to recede.

“We are admitting him overnight because he has a history of biphasic reactions,” Evan said. “One parent can stay.”

“His mother will,” Daniel said immediately, as if assigning me another task.

I turned to him. “You will stay until the allergy educator finishes with you. Then we will follow the temporary parenting schedule our attorneys filed this morning.”

His relief vanished. “This is not the time.”

“It became the time when you brought our son in without the medication that should have been on his body.”

Theo stirred beneath the blanket. His hand searched the air until I took it.

“Mommy,” he whispered through the mask. “I’m sorry I said I hated you.”

I sat beside him. “We will talk about words when you feel better. Right now, breathe with me.”

I counted each inhalation. His fingers slowly loosened around mine.

Daniel watched from the other side of the bed. “Come home after this,” he said. “Lauren can leave. I will do anything.”

“This is not about replacing one household manager with another.”

“He needs both parents.”

“He needs both parents to act like parents.”

My attorney arrived forty minutes later with a process server and a copy of the emergency petition. I did not serve Daniel beside Theo. I asked him to step into the consultation room, where the door could close.

Inside, I placed three documents on the table: the separation filing, a request for a temporary shared schedule conditioned on medical training, and notice terminating my private consulting work for Vance Biomedical Construction.

Daniel scanned the last page first. “You cannot terminate this in the middle of the hospital bid.”

“My name is not on your employment records, consulting agreements, or patent filings. According to you, I never worked for the company. There is nothing to terminate except my willingness to rescue you.”

“The new isolation wing depends on those airflow corrections.”

“Then your licensed engineers should make them.”

He pushed the papers away. “You are using Theo’s medical emergency to destroy me.”

“No. His emergency proved why I can no longer protect you from consequences.”

Lauren waited at the far end of the corridor when we emerged. Daniel walked past her without speaking. She caught his arm, but he shook her off and returned to Theo’s room for training.

A hospital social worker interviewed us separately before midnight. She documented the missing medication, the discarded manual, and the delay in calling emergency services. She did not decide custody; she created an objective record for Theo’s pediatrician and the court. Daniel answered without looking at me. When asked who normally managed Theo’s allergies, he said my name.

The admission cost him more than the argument ever could.

The social worker arranged for the pharmacy to dispense replacement auto-injectors before discharge and asked Daniel to photograph where he stored each one. She also added a red banner to Theo’s chart: caregivers must demonstrate emergency competence before independent pickup. It was not punishment. It was a safety measure with no room for charm.

At midnight, Theo slept with his whale backpack on the chair beside him. The hospital educator had fitted both Daniel and me with trainer pens and made us demonstrate the correct injection sequence. Daniel passed on his fourth attempt.

I stayed until dawn. When Evan confirmed that Theo’s airway remained stable, I kissed his forehead and left for the research floor.

Aaron Brooks, the medical center’s chief operating officer, waited outside a secured laboratory suite with a folder under his arm.

“The board approved your independent biocontainment grant,” he said. “Your name goes on the lab, the publications, and every design.”

He handed me a new access badge: DR. MAYA LIN, PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR.

“There is one complication,” Aaron added. “The procurement review for the new isolation wing begins next Thursday. After last night, two reviewers recused themselves. The board wants you to chair the technical panel.”

I opened the bidder list.

The first company scheduled to present was Vance Biomedical Construction.

“Does Daniel know?” I asked.

“Not yet.”

I clipped the badge to my coat and signed the panel appointment.

“Then let him prepare for an honest review.”
