Left My Billionaire Husband After Committed to Hospital Chapter 1

"Rest now, sweetheart," Dave whispered, smoothing the thick wool blanket over my deadened legs. "You pushed yourself too hard in physical therapy today."

He kissed my forehead, warm and steady, the exact way he had every night for the past ten years.

At the bedroom door, he paused to look back at Clara, our night nurse.

"If she needs anything at all—even a glass of water—wake me first," Dave instructed her in a firm, quiet voice. "Don't let her strain herself trying to reach the bell."

"Of course, Mr. Callan," Clara replied.

I smiled into my pillow, feeling that familiar wave of gratitude wash over me.

Everyone in this city called me a saint, but they called Dave an angel. Ten years ago, when we were both twenty, a speeding truck ran a red light. I threw myself across the center console, taking the full impact on my side to shield him. The crash shattered my spine. I woke up paralyzed from the waist down, my dancing career dead before it began.

Most college boyfriends would have run. Dave stayed. He proposed in the rehabilitation clinic, slipped an antique platinum ring on my finger, and swore to be my legs for the rest of our lives. For a decade, I believed I was the luckiest woman on earth.

Until two in the morning.

A sharp cramp in my shoulder woke me. The room was icy.

I reached out across the mattress, expecting to find the broad, solid heat of Dave's back.

My fingers touched bare, cold linen.

"Dave?" I murmured.

No answer. The en-suite bathroom door stood wide open, pitch dark.

I glanced toward the armchair in the corner where Clara usually dozed. It was empty. A folded cardigan rested on the cushion, but she was nowhere in sight.

A strange restlessness prickled at the back of my neck. I shifted my weight, dragging my useless lower half to the edge of the mattress. My arms strained, muscles burning as I hauled my torso onto the leather seat of my wheelchair. I locked the footrests into place, secured my limp feet, and unlocked the wheels.

The hallway carpet muffled the spin of the rubber tires.

The house was cavernous at night, bathed in pale gray moonlight. Then, from down the west wing—past the library, toward the guest suite—a sound cut through the silence.

A woman's muffled laugh.

Then a man's low, ragged voice: "Be quiet. She's a light sleeper."

My hands froze on the push rims.

That voice belonged to my husband.

The door to the guest bedroom stood cracked open an inch, spilling a thin yellow ribbon of lamp light onto the floorboards.

I rolled forward, every inch making my chest tighter.

"Why do you always worry about her?" the woman's voice drifted through the gap, playful and petulant. "You drugged her chamomile tea, Dave. Clara watched her drink every drop."

My stomach lurched into freefall.

"I didn't drug her, Chloe," Dave groaned, followed by the heavy creak of bedsprings and wet, open-mouthed kisses. "It's just a mild sedative. Just enough so she doesn't ring that damn bell while I'm inside you."

The world stopped spinning. It fractured into razor-sharp pieces.

I lurched forward, intending to throw the door open, but the wheel clipped a tall ceramic urn beside the doorframe.

*Smash.*

The heavy porcelain shattered against the hardwood with the sound of a gunshot.

The noises inside the room vanished instantly.

"Who's there?" Dave's voice was tight, panicked.

I didn't answer. I slammed both palms against the mahogany door and shoved.

It swung wide.

The smell of sex and expensive perfume hit me first. On the king-sized bed, Dave was scrambling off the mattress, frantically pulling a pair of boxers over his hips. His chest was covered in red scratch marks.

His face drained of color the second his eyes met mine. He looked like he had seen a ghost.

"Sabrina," he choked out, holding his hands up. "Wait. Sabrina—"

My gaze drifted past his shaking shoulders to the woman lounging against the headboard.

She wasn't scrambling for clothes. She leisurely pulled the satin sheet up to her ribs, exposing bare shoulders and long, perfect legs.

My breath caught in my throat.

She had my wide, dark eyes. She had my high cheekbones. She wore her chestnut hair cut short to her collarbones, exactly the way I had worn mine the summer I was twenty. She looked like a photograph of me before the metal of that car crushed my spine.

"Well," Chloe said, tossing her hair with a smirk. "Look who decided to join the party."

"Shut up, Chloe!" Dave barked, spinning toward her in sheer terror before whipping back to me. "Sabrina, listen to me. This isn't—this isn't what it looks like. I swear to God, she's nobody. She's just—"

"Dave, stop embarrassing yourself," Chloe interrupted. She rested her chin in her palm, tilting her head at me. "Didn't you promise me she would never find out? You said she was an invalid who couldn't even leave her bed without Clara's permission."

"I told you to shut your mouth!" Dave roared, stepping toward the bed as if to physically silence her.

Chloe didn't flinch. Instead, she raised her left hand to inspect her manicured nails.

Light flashed off her finger.

My eyes locked onto it. A platinum band set with small, brilliant sapphires encircling an oval diamond.

It was my grandmother's ring.

The ring Dave had slipped onto my finger in the hospital room.

The ring he claimed was lost three years ago when I took it off to wash my hands in a hotel lobby. He had held me while I wept, promising he would buy me a bigger one.

"My ring," I said.

My voice was flat. No tremor. No tears. Just a cold, dead sound that surprised even me.

Dave flinched as if I had struck him. He looked down at Chloe's hand, his throat bobbing violently. "Sabrina, please. I gave it to her because—"

"Because I asked for it," Chloe cut in smoothly. She stretched her legs beneath the sheets, flaunting the ease with which her limbs moved. "Sister, you didn't really think an able-bodied, wealthy man was going to spend his entire youth wiping drool and changing bedpans for a crippled wife, did you?"

"Chloe, get out!" Dave yelled, lunging toward her arm.

She pulled back, laughing right in his face. "Why are you yelling at me? You're the one who found me. You hunted down every girl in the city who looked like your broken little martyr because you couldn't stand touching her dead legs!"

The room fell into suffocating silence.

The words didn't pierce me; they turned me to stone. All those late nights at the office. All those times he kissed my cheek and told me I was his hero, his brave fighter, while refusing to touch me beneath the waist because he 'feared hurting me.'

He hadn't been protecting me. He had been disgusted by me.

Dave stepped toward my wheelchair, dropping to his knees on the hardwood. He tried to grab my hand, but I pulled it back onto the armrest.

"Sabrina, look at me," he pleaded, his voice breaking into ugly sobs. "I love you. You know I love you! You saved my life. I owe you everything. This—Chloe—it was just a release. A physical weakness! It never meant anything. You are my wife. You will always be the mistress of this house!"

I looked down at the man I had traded my legs to save.

Ten years of devotion. Ten years of gratitude.

"So," I said quietly, staring straight into his desperate, lying eyes. "This is what you called love all these years?"

Dave opened his mouth to reply.

Nothing came out.
