Chapter 3

I laid the photographs on the kitchen table. One by one. The toppled headstone. The spray paint. The crushed flowers. The timestamp from the security footage showing Matias Rose, clear as day.

Jonah stood at the counter with his coffee. He glanced down at the images.

"I need you to call the police," I said.

He picked up one of the photos. Studied it. Set it down.

"Hope."

"His face is on camera. He vandalized my mother's grave. We have evidence."

Jonah rubbed his face. That gesture I knew. The one that came before he told me I was being unreasonable.

"Matias probably had too much to drink," he said. His voice was calm. Measured. "Kids do stupid things when they're drunk. It doesn't mean—"

"He pissed on my mother's grave."

Jonah's jaw tightened. "You don't know that was him."

I pointed at my phone. "The footage shows him."

"It's blurry."

"It's him."

He set his mug down. Hard. Coffee sloshed over the rim. "Why are you doing this?"

I stared at him. "Doing what?"

"Harassing Paulina's family." He stepped closer. His tone shifted. Wounded. Injured. "You've had it out for her since day one. Now you're going after her brother? Over some drunken mistake?"

"It wasn't a mistake. He destroyed—"

"You need to stop making Paulina the villain in everything." His voice rose. "She's been nothing but kind to you. She helped you at work. She's been supportive. And this is how you repay her? By attacking her family?"

My good hand pressed flat against the table. "I'm not attacking anyone. I'm asking you to report a crime."

"A crime." He laughed. Short and bitter. "You're blowing this completely out of proportion."

"My mother's headstone is toppled. There's spray paint—"

"So we'll get it cleaned. We'll fix it." He picked up his phone. "But I'm not dragging Paulina's brother into this. The kid made a mistake. He's young. He doesn't need a record because you can't let things go."

I watched his hand move through his hair. That tell.

"You're not going to call," I said quietly.

He looked at me. Something shifted in his expression. Something cold.

"No," he said. "I'm not."

The room went silent.

Then he unlocked his phone and dialed.

I thought—for one stupid, desperate second—that he'd changed his mind.

"Yes, I need to report harassment," he said into the phone.

My stomach dropped.

"My wife has been threatening my colleague's family. She's making false accusations. She's—" He glanced at me. "She's not stable right now. I think she needs help."

I stood. My chair scraped concrete.

"Jonah."

He turned away. Kept talking. Gave them my name. Our address. He described me like I was a stranger. Unhinged. Dangerous.

He hung up.

"They're sending someone," he said.

I stared at him. At the man I married. The man I cooked for. Cleaned for. Gave up everything for.

"You just called the police on me," I whispered.

He pocketed his phone. "You need help, Hope. You've been different since the fire. Angry. Paranoid. Maybe this will be good for you."

He left the kitchen.

I stood alone at the table and looked at the photographs of my mother's desecrated grave.

I didn't cry.

---

The holding room smelled like bleach and old coffee. Gray walls. Fluorescent lights. A metal table bolted to the floor. I sat in a folding chair with my injured arm throbbing and stared at the concrete.

They hadn't arrested me. Not officially. Just "asked me to come down to the station" to "clear things up." The officer who drove me was polite. Professional. He didn't look at me.

Through the narrow window in the door, I could see the precinct hallway. Officers moving back and forth. Phones ringing.

Through the exterior window—the one facing the street—I saw Jonah.

He stood on the sidewalk with Paulina and Matias. Paulina's hand rested on his forearm. Matias looked sullen but unworried. Jonah shook his head. His mouth moved. Explaining. Performing.

An officer nodded. Sympathetic. Understanding.

Across the street, Mrs. Brennan from two houses down stood with her arms crossed, watching. She'd always smiled at me before. Waved when I took out the trash.

Now she just stared.

I pressed my right hand over my left wrist. The self-soothing gesture Diane taught me in physical therapy. Pressure. Grounding.

I had nothing left.

No jewelry. Jonah sold it.

No grave. Matias destroyed it.

No arm that worked. Jonah left me in the fire.

No husband. He was outside with her.

No dignity. I was locked in a holding room like a criminal while my neighbors watched.

I stared at the concrete wall.

And I waited.

Because somewhere—far away from this cold room, this broken marriage, this suffocating life—my grandfather's people were coming.

I just had to hold on a little longer.

I closed my eyes.

And I held on.
