Left At The Airport By My Family Chapter 1

Everyone said I was born to be a servant.

My own mother treated me like a maid, forcing me to cater to my brothers.

That was why I had zero self-worth from the very start.

On my twenty-second birthday, my brother pushed me down the stairs.

It was then that Ryan appeared — the rising corporate star, my savior.

He publicly declared that I was his person, warning my family to back off.

Whenever my mother demanded money, he shut her down.

Whenever my brothers mocked me, he ruined their careers.

I had never been treated so well before, and I fell completely for him.

Three months later, I walked down the aisle in a white wedding dress.

Ryan spoiled me rotten, making me the envy of the entire world.

Everything changed on the day of our family trip to Hawaii.

At the airport, he unexpectedly handed my business-class ticket to his female colleague Lauren.

Everyone in our circle envied me — I had a loving husband and a smart twelve-year-old son, Mason.

But just before they boarded, I went to fetch them some water and accidentally overheard their conversation.

"Can you really leave Emma at the airport?" Lauren's voice echoed near the gate. "She'll be so angry."

"Do you think I care?" Ryan lowered his voice tightly.

"But she packed everything for this family trip!"

"That's exactly why I canceled her ticket behind her back! Mason and I are sick of her."

I balanced three cold bottles of water against my chest as I threaded through the crowd at Gate K12. I had left Ryan and Mason for less than four minutes. That was all it took for my family vacation to become someone else's.

I heard Ryan before I saw him.

"I already handled it, Lauren," my husband said.

I stopped behind a concrete pillar near the boarding lane.

Ryan stood with one hand at the small of Lauren's back. His thumb moved over the silk of her blouse with an ease that did not belong between an executive and his assistant.

"Emma's seat is canceled," he continued. "The airline reissued it in your name."

One of the bottles slipped from my grasp. It hit the carpet and rolled until it tapped Ryan's leather loafer.

Lauren looked toward the sound. Her expression shifted from surprise to careful sympathy.

"Emma," she said. "I didn't know you were standing there."

Ryan did not remove his hand.

I stepped out from behind the pillar. "You canceled my ticket?"

He glanced at the bottle by his shoe as if that were the real inconvenience. Then he pulled a boarding pass from his jacket pocket and held it out to Lauren.

LAUREN DAVIS. SEAT 2A.

My seat.

"The legroom is better for your knees," Ryan told her.

Lauren accepted the pass. "Thank you. The swelling has been awful since the hiking trip."

"The hiking trip you took with my husband?" I asked.

Her fingers tightened around the cardstock. "It was a team retreat."

"There were two people in every photo."

Ryan checked his watch. The silver Rolex on his wrist had been my gift for his thirtieth birthday, bought during the years when my salary covered our mortgage and his company existed only as a business plan on our kitchen table.

"Don't start a scene at the gate," he said.

"This was supposed to be our anniversary trip."

"It is still a family trip."

I looked from him to Lauren. "Then why is she taking my seat?"

"Her original ticket was oversold, and she has to be in Maui tonight for the sponsor meeting. The surf event is tied to the Apex account."

"She is your assistant."

"She is essential to the team."

"And I am what?"

His mouth flattened. "Someone who can go home without turning it into a corporate emergency."

The boarding agent announced preboarding over the speakers. Passengers rose, gathered bags, and formed a loose line beneath the glowing sign.

Mason appeared from the charging station with his gaming console in one hand and a new pair of headphones around his neck. At twelve, he was already tall enough to look me in the eye. He glanced at Lauren's boarding pass, then at my face.

"Mom, please don't make this weird," he said.

The words landed harder than Ryan's.

"Your father gave my seat away."

Mason shrugged. "Lauren said she'll take me to the beginner surf lesson tomorrow. You hate the ocean anyway."

"I don't hate the ocean."

"You always worry about everything. Sunscreen. Water. Currents." He rolled his eyes. "It ruins the fun."

I stared at the three bottles in my arms. I had bought one for each of them because Ryan complained airport water was overpriced, Lauren said flying made her dehydrated, and Mason never remembered to drink unless I reminded him.

Ryan lowered his voice. "The refund went back to the card. Take the train home."

"You changed the reservation without asking me."

"I paid for it."

"I paid the mortgage for five years while you built Apex's acquisition division. I guaranteed the first business cards. I kept us afloat."

"Ancient history," he said. "I bring in the real money now. You manage the house, and lately you have not even done that well. My dry cleaning sat at the shop all weekend."

"I was taking Mason to the dentist."

"That took an hour."

"The dentist found a cracked filling. We were there all afternoon."

Mason shifted his backpack higher. "Dad, boarding started."

Ryan looked relieved to have an excuse to end the conversation. He took Lauren's carry-on handle and guided her toward the priority lane.

I stepped in front of him. "Are you really getting on that plane without me?"

His eyes hardened. "Move, Emma."

"Answer me."

"You can come later if you stop being dramatic and buy another ticket."

"With what seat? The flight is full."

"Then take tomorrow's."

Lauren touched his arm. "Ryan, we should go."

He turned toward her at once.

That small movement answered every question I had spent months refusing to ask.

Mason hesitated near the scanner. For one second, hope rose in my chest. I thought he might come back. I thought he might look at his mother standing alone with three bottles of water and understand what was happening.

Instead, he held out his hand to Lauren.

"Did you download the surf video?" he asked.

"On the plane," she promised.

The agent scanned their passes. Ryan went first, then Lauren, then Mason.

I called my son's name.

He glanced over his shoulder.

"Are you leaving me here too?" I asked.

His face pinched with embarrassment. "Mom, everyone is looking."

Then he turned away and followed them down the jet bridge.

The boarding door closed six minutes later.

A gate agent approached with a narrow strip of paper. "Mrs. Mills? This is the cancellation receipt for the original ticket. Your husband authorized the change through the family reservation."

Across the top, my name was printed beside one word in heavy black letters.

VOID.

I folded the paper once and slipped it into my coat pocket.

Beyond the glass, the plane pushed back from the gate. Ryan had taken my seat, my son, and our anniversary trip and handed all three to another woman.

He expected me to take the train home and have dinner waiting when he returned.

I tightened my arms around the remaining bottles and watched the aircraft turn toward the runway.

For the first time in thirteen years, I did not chase after my family.
