Leaving the fiancé who said I can't get rid of him Chapter 1

The positive pregnancy test burned a hole in my pocket. I had paced the sidewalk outside the club for ten minutes, rehearsing the words. *Mark, we’re going to have a baby.* *Mark, I’m pregnant.* Every version sounded terrifying, yet thrilling. Seven years by his side, building his empire from the ground up, and now, we were building a family.

I pushed through the heavy velvet curtains of the VIP lounge corridor. The bass from the main floor thumped against my ribs, but back here, it was quieter. I spotted the door to his private booth, slightly ajar. Light spilled into the dim hallway, along with the clinking of glasses and bursts of laughter.

I raised my hand to push the door open.

"So, when's the wedding?" a voice asked. It sounded like Greg, one of Mark's new tech-bro buddies.

I froze. My hand hovered inches from the wood.

"Wedding?" Mark’s voice cut through the air, smooth and laced with amusement. "Who said anything about a wedding?"

"You and Avery," Greg pressed. "You guys have been attached at the hip since college. She practically runs your life. And after that trip to Aspen last month... come on, man. You’re a billionaire now. Time to settle down."

Ice water replaced the blood in my veins.

"I'm not marrying Avery," Mark said. The words hit me like a physical blow.

"Damn, really?" Another voice chimed in. "She’s gonna flip when she realizes that."

Mark chuckled. A low, arrogant sound I had never directed at me. "She won't flip. She’s just a really good female friend. Or, you know, a plaything."

*A plaything.*

The hallway spun. I grabbed the wall to steady myself, my fingers digging into the textured wallpaper.

"A plaything?" Greg whistled. "That's harsh, even for you. Aren't you worried she'll get pissed and walk? She knows all your company's secrets."

"Avery won't get mad," Mark replied, his tone dripping with absolute certainty. "She loves me too much. I couldn't drive her away if I tried."

My stomach heaved. I clamped a hand over my mouth to stifle the gasp clawing its way up my throat.

*She loves me too much.*

He knew. He had always known. And he used it.

I didn't kick the door open. I didn't scream. I didn't throw the plastic stick with its two pink lines in his face. I turned on my heel and walked away.

The club music roared as I stumbled out onto the street, but all I heard was the ringing in my ears.

*A plaything.*

The cab ride home was a blur. I stared out the window at the passing city lights, the Silicon Valley skyline that we had conquered together.

Seven years ago, Mark had been a scrawny kid in a hoodie, clutching a binder full of messy code and brilliant ideas. He had cornered me outside a lecture hall. *You study PR, right? I need someone to talk to the suits. I can build it, but I can't sell it.*

We clicked instantly. Late nights fueled by cheap pizza and bad coffee. I polished his pitches, smoothed over his rough edges, and charmed the venture capitalists who thought he was just another arrogant nerd. We built the company side by side. When the IPO hit last week, making him an instant billionaire, I thought we had finally made it.

I thought the late-night texts, the expensive Christmas gifts, the shared hotel rooms on business trips meant something. He never said *I love you*, but he never looked at anyone else the way he looked at me.

Or so I thought.

Last month, after closing our biggest acquisition deal, we had celebrated with too much champagne in a penthouse suite. One thing led to another. It felt like the natural progression of everything we had built.

Now, I stood in the foyer of my apartment, the silence deafening.

I sank to the floor, my back sliding against the front door until my knees hit my chest. I pressed my hands against my flat stomach.

"A plaything," I whispered to the empty room.

Tears finally spilled over, hot and fast. I curled into a ball on the hardwood, sobbing until my chest ached. Seven years of late nights, compromises, and silent devotion, all reduced to a punchline in a VIP booth.

My phone buzzed in my bag. I ignored it. It buzzed again.

I dragged it out. *Mark.*

*Where are you? Thought you were coming by the club tonight.*

I stared at the screen, the glowing letters blurring through my tears.

He thought I would always be there. He thought he could keep me waiting in the wings forever, a convenient fixture in his newly minted billionaire life.

I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand. The sadness was fading, replaced by a cold, sharp ache.

I typed a reply.

*Change of plans. We need to talk tomorrow.*
