After meeting my husband's mistress in the hospital maternity ward Chapter 1

I stared at the crisp ultrasound photo in my hand. A tiny, blurry shape. My second baby.

"Mrs. Miller, you're all set," the nurse said, handing back my insurance card.

"Thank you," I replied.

I walked down the hallway of the maternity ward, my thumb gently tracing the edge of the paper. I couldn't wait to tell Paul. I pulled my phone from my purse and dialed his office number.

It rang three times and went straight to voicemail.

"Hi, you've reached Paul Miller. Please leave a message."

I ended the call and dropped the phone back into my bag. I would just tell him tonight.

I rounded the corner toward the main elevators. Then, my feet stopped moving.

Fifty feet away, outside Clinic Room 3, stood my husband.

He wore his navy suit, the exact one I ironed for him this morning. But he wasn't at the office. He was holding a woman's elbow, guiding her out of the room.

Claire.

Claire Davis. His high school sweetheart. The woman he claimed he hadn't spoken to in over a decade.

I stepped behind a wide concrete pillar. I pressed my back against the cold surface and peeked around the edge.

"Paul, you don't have to treat me like glass," Claire said. Her voice carried easily down the quiet corridor.

"The doctor said you shouldn't get too tired," Paul replied.

His tone made my chest tighten. Paul was a man of few words. He was practical, stoic, and usually distant. I hadn't heard him use that gentle, hushed voice since our first year of marriage.

"I'm just walking," Claire said, offering a soft laugh.

"Are you feeling uncomfortable?" he asked.

"No. I'm okay."

"Do you want me to carry your purse?"

"I've got it, Paul."

Claire shifted her weight. Her hand moved to rest gently over her lower stomach. In her other hand, she clutched a yellow paper.

A prenatal checkup slip. The exact same yellow slip I had folded in my pocket right now.

"Did the doctor say anything else?" Claire asked.

"Just that you need rest," Paul said. "And no stress."

"I'm not stressed. Not with you here."

"I promised I'd take care of you, didn't I?"

"You did. But you have a wife, Paul. I don't want to cause trouble."

"Don't worry about Leah. I handle my own house."

My fingers curled into fists. My nails dug into my palms until the skin stung.

"We need to get your vitamins," Paul said.

"We can stop at the pharmacy on the way back," Claire answered.

"I'll pull the car around to the front. Wait here."

I didn't move. I didn't step out from behind the pillar to confront them. I didn't scream his name or demand an explanation. My throat felt sealed shut.

I watched him guide her to the lobby chairs. He made sure she was seated before heading toward the sliding glass doors.

I turned around and hurried toward the emergency stairs.

The drive home passed in a blur. I parked in the driveway and walked through the front door.

The house was quiet, save for the electronic pings of a video game. My six-year-old son, Nick, sat on the living room rug.

"Hey, buddy," I said.

Nick kept his eyes fixed on his tablet screen. "Hi."

I dropped my purse on the console table and walked over to him. I knelt on the carpet. My hands trembled slightly. I just needed something to anchor me, something to prove my family was still real.

"What are you playing?" I asked.

"Racing game," he muttered.

"Are you winning?"

"I was, until you started talking to me."

"Sorry."

I reached out and wrapped my arms around his small shoulders. I pressed my cheek against the top of his head. I needed my son.

Nick stiffened.

He shoved his elbows backward, breaking my hold.

"Mom, stop," he complained, scooting a few feet away.

"I just wanted a hug," I said.

"You're messing up my game."

"Can't you pause it for one second?"

Nick rolled his eyes. He glared at me with the exact same dark eyes his father had.

"Mom, you’re always so emotional," Nick groaned. "Leave me alone."

He stood up, grabbed his tablet, and stomped up the stairs. His bedroom door slammed shut a moment later.

I stayed on the floor. The silence of the house pressed down on me from all sides.

The hours dragged. I sat at the kitchen island, staring at the clock on the stove.

8:15 PM.

The front lock tumbled. The heavy oak door swung open.

Paul walked in. He tossed his keys into the ceramic bowl by the door. He loosened his tie and slipped off his suit jacket.

"You're home late," I said.

He glanced into the kitchen. "Traffic."

"How was work?"

"Busy." He walked over to the fridge and opened it. "Is there any dinner left?"

"I didn't cook."

He shut the fridge door. "Why not?"

"I wasn't hungry."

Paul sighed. "I'll just order something."

He pulled his phone from his pocket.

"Did you have any meetings out of the office today?" I asked.

His thumbs paused over the screen. "No. I was at my desk all day."

A lie. A smooth, effortless lie.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

He looked up, his brow furrowing. "Yes, Leah. I'm sure. Why are you interrogating me?"

"I'm not interrogating you. I just like to know about your day."

"It was a normal Tuesday. There's nothing to tell."

"Are you sure you were at your desk?"

"Why are you asking me the same question twice?"

"Because I called your office line at two o'clock. It went straight to voicemail."

"I was in the conference room. I didn't have my calls forwarded."

"For how long?"

"Leah, what is this about? Do you want to see my schedule?"

"Maybe I do."

"You're acting crazy."

I stood up from the stool. I smoothed my palms down the front of my jeans.

"Put the phone down," I said.

"I'm ordering food."

"Paul, put it down. We need to talk."

He sighed again, louder this time, and placed the phone face-down on the granite counter.

"Make it quick," he said. "I have an early presentation tomorrow."

"I went to the doctor today."

"Are you sick?"

"No."

"Then what is it?"

I reached into my back pocket. I pulled out the folded ultrasound photo. I placed it on the counter and slid it toward him.

"Paul, I'm pregnant."

I watched his face. I waited for the walls to drop. I waited for the stoic, distant man to disappear and be replaced by the husband who cried when Nick was born.

He didn't smile. He didn't reach for my hand.

He stared at the black-and-white image.

Five seconds passed. Then ten.

"Say something," I whispered.

Paul slowly lifted his gaze. His eyes were completely blank.

"Are you sure it's mine?" he asked.

The words hit me like a physical blow. The blood drained from my face. My knees locked. I gripped the edge of the counter to keep from swaying.

"What?" I choked out.

"You heard me."

"How can you ask me that?" My voice cracked. "We have been married for twelve years. I have never even looked at another man."

"People hide things, Leah."

"I am not hiding anything! I am carrying your child!"

"Are you?"

"Yes!" I slammed my hand on the counter. "What is wrong with you? Why would you accuse me of cheating?"

Paul didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice.

He simply picked up his phone.

He flipped it over, unlocked the screen, and navigated to his photo gallery.

"Because," Paul said, his tone flat and even.

He slid the phone across the granite. It stopped right next to my ultrasound picture.

"Because of this."

I looked down at the glowing screen.

It was another ultrasound photo. The baby was clearly visible, a few weeks further along than mine.

But it wasn't the image that made the room spin.

It was the patient name printed in the top right corner.

*Claire Davis.*
