Chapter 2

After squeezing out those words, I finally passed out from exhaustion.

The doctor gave me an injection as he wiped away the cold sweat from his brow. "Don't fall asleep, madam. You won't wake up again if you do. Think about your husband and your children. They're all waiting for you!"

Frank tried to make me stay awake as well. "The doctor is right. You did well by protecting me. Once you're treated, I'll reward you and the baby in your belly. I'll take him in as my godson. You need to hold on! I've gotten my men to get Victor!"

My lips twitched when I heard Frank's words. I was not a fool. I knew from the moment that I shielded Frank from being shot that I had lost the baby. As for Victor, he would never show up.

That was when the men Frank sent out to get Victor hurried back. He went on his knees with a thud and did not dare to look at Frank. Frank frowned as he asked furiously, "Where's Victor?!"

Frank's subordinate stammered, "V-Victor Villani refused to come. He said that Mrs. Villani should not use tactics like this to earn his sympathy."

I knew right away that Victor must have said worse things to the man, but he did not dare repeat them in front of Frank. I was nothing compared to how important Aurora was to Victor, even though I was his legitimate wife, while Aurora was just his mistress.

Victor had abandoned his duties and left Frank in danger by taking away his entire team of bodyguards just because he wanted to cheer up Aurora.

When I called Victor to ask him to hurry back in the past, he accused me of being greedy for fame and fortune. This time, Frank had personally sent his men to get Victor, and still ended up being ignored. If Victor loved Aurora so much, why did he even marry me?

The thought angered me, and it only made me cough up more blood. The doctor pushed back his glasses, which almost fell off, and looked cautiously at Frank. "Don Russo, Mrs. Villani is too emotional. She might not make it if she doesn't have any kin staying by her side."

Frank glanced at me and held his temper back as he pulled off a cross from his neck to give it to his subordinate. "Take this and tell him that it's an order from me. If he still refuses to come, he will no longer be part of this family!"

He was furious. Despite having many bodyguards, none of them were around today when there was an assassination attempt on him. I had protected him with my life, yet he could not even get my husband to appear. This was a great insult for a mafia Don.

As I was unable to move, the doctor had to make sure I survived until the paramedics arrived by putting me on a strongly medicated drip. I could still hear the doctor's voice when the bodyguard returned, but he was not alone.
