Chapter 2

Muscle memory woke me at six.

Even after the humiliation of the previous night, my body went through the motions out of pure habit. I tied my hair back, went down to the kitchen, and set a skillet over low flame. Toast, sunny-side-up eggs, turkey bacon, and a pot of fresh coffee.

For three years, this had been my daily routine. A seamless, quiet foundation to let Liam build his empire.

The soft shuffle of slippers behind me broke the silence.

I turned, expecting Noah.

Instead, Sarah stood in the kitchen doorway. She was wearing Liam’s oversized gray Oxford shirt. The hem fell past mid-thigh, the sleeves casually rolled up to her elbows, leaving her long, pale legs bare.

She leaned against the doorframe, a faint, sleepy smile playing on her lips.

"Morning," Sarah murmured, her voice laced with that delicate, airy rasp. "Smells delicious. You're really quite the domestic type, aren't you?"

I gripped the spatula tightly. "That's Liam's shirt."

"Oh, this?" Sarah looked down at the collar, smoothing the crisp cotton over her collarbone with deliberate slowness. "Sorry about that. My clothes were completely wrinkled in the suitcase. Liam brought it in for me late last night so I’d have something clean to sleep in."

She walked over to the island, poured herself a cup of water, and leaned on the granite counter.

"We ended up talking until almost three on the back patio," she continued, her hazel eyes flicking up to mine with sharp intent. "Reminiscing about Boston, college days... Liam hasn't laughed like that in years, Maya. He seemed so exhausted when he got home yesterday. Running a company all on his own must be terribly lonely."

The insinuation hung thick in the air.

*You don't understand him. You're just the hired help he married.*

"The coffee's on the counter," I said evenly, turning back to the stove. "Breakfast will be ready in ten minutes."

Sarah paused, clearly caught off guard by my lack of an explosive reaction. Then she let out a soft sigh, slipping into her fragile persona as heavy footsteps came down the stairs.

Liam walked in, freshly showered in a navy suit. Noah trailed behind him, already wearing his school backpack.

"Dad, can Aunt Sarah come to breakfast?" Noah asked, clutching Liam's hand.

"Of course she can, buddy," Liam said. He didn't look at me as he took his seat at the head of the table. "Morning, Sarah. Sleep well?"

"Like a baby," Sarah said softly, pulling out the chair right beside him. "Your shirt is so warm."

Liam offered her a small, indulgent smile. He didn't spare a glance in my direction.

I brought the plates to the table, setting breakfast down in front of Noah, Liam, and Sarah. Finally, I returned with a pitcher of warm whole milk. Noah drank it every morning before school for his throat.

I poured a glass for Noah, then moved to fill Sarah’s glass beside Liam.

"Here," I said, tilting the small glass pitcher.

Sarah reached out as if to take it, but her hand didn't wrap around the glass. Instead, her fingers flicked violently against the side of the tumbler.

The heavy glass tipped, spilling a wave of warm liquid across the polished wood, straight onto Sarah’s bare forearm and lap.

"Ow!" Sarah shrieked, jumping back so hard her chair screeched against the floor. "It burns!"

Liam was on his feet instantly.

"Sarah!" He grabbed the linen napkin from his collar and lunged forward, frantically wiping the milk from her skin. "Are you okay? Let me see your arm."

Sarah whimpered, burying her face against Liam's chest while clutching her forearm. "It’s okay... it was an accident. Maya was just passing it to me... I shouldn't have reached."

The milk was barely above lukewarm. I had heated it for less than ninety seconds.

Liam whipped his head toward me, his face twisted with venom.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" he roared, his voice echoing through the dining room. "Are you completely incompetent? You can't even pour a glass of milk without scalding someone?"

"Liam, she knocked it over herself," I said, my voice dead and level.

"Don't lie!" Liam slammed his fist onto the table, rattling the silverware. "I was sitting right here! You've been giving her dirty looks since last night! You’re so consumed by your pathetic jealousy that you're stooping to physically hurting a guest?"

I looked at Sarah. Hidden against the crook of Liam’s shoulder, her lips curled into a tiny, victorious smirk before she buried her face deeper, letting out another theatrical sob.

Liam stroked her dark hair, his voice dropping into a tender murmur. "Don't cry, Sarah. I’m right here. I’ll get you some burn cream."

He treated her like fine porcelain, while treating his wife of five years like dirt beneath his shoes.

I didn't yell. I didn't defend myself. I just stood there, clutching the empty pitcher, watching the two of them. A strange, icy calm washed through my veins. The illusion had shattered, and the man I once loved was nothing more than a stranger.

"Noah," I said quietly, turning my eyes away from the grotesque display. "Grab your jacket. We’re going to be late for school."

Noah sat frozen in his chair, his eyes darting between Sarah's tears and Liam’s rage.

I took a step toward him, extending my hand to take his backpack. "Come on, sweetie. Let's go."

Noah didn't take my hand.

Instead, he slapped my palm away with all the strength his seven-year-old body had.

*Smack.*

The sharp crack echoed in the room.

"Don't touch me!" Noah screamed, his face turning red with sudden, furious tears.

He scrambled off his chair, ran around the table, and threw his arms tightly around Sarah's waist, burying his head against her hip.

"Noah?" My voice trembled, the breath knocked out of me.

"I hate you!" Noah yelled, turning his tear-streaked face toward me, his small features twisted in raw malice. "You're mean to Aunt Sarah! You made her cry! You're mean to Dad, and you're always yelling at everyone!"

"Noah, that's not true—"

"I don't want you to take me to school!" he shrieked, cutting me off with absolute savagery. "I want Aunt Sarah to take me! I hate you! I wish Aunt Sarah was my real mom!"

The words hit like a physical blade through my chest.

*I wish Aunt Sarah was my real mom.*

Every sleepless night I spent kneeling by his bed when his asthma flared. Every meal measured to the gram. The career I threw in the trash so he would never come home to an empty house. The exhaustion, the loneliness, the endless sacrifices.

Wiped out by a plastic robot and a pair of fake tears.

The suffocating agony flared for one terrifying second, and then... it snapped.

The warmth in my chest died completely. The blind, unyielding maternal instinct that had defined my life for seven years went entirely cold.

Liam didn't correct our son. He didn't scold Noah for disrespecting his mother.

Instead, he looked at me with open disgust, as if Noah had simply voiced an undeniable truth.

"Look at what you’ve done," Liam sneered coldly. "Even your own child can't stand you."

He bent down, gently scooping Noah’s backpack off the floor with one hand while keeping an arm around Sarah’s shoulders.

"Come on, Sarah. Let's get some ice for your arm in the car. Noah, let's go. Dad will take you both."

"Okay," Noah sniffled, clinging tightly to Sarah’s hand.

Sarah looked over her shoulder as they moved toward the foyer. Her hazel eyes met mine through the doorway. No tears remained. Only a smug, triumphant glare.

The front door opened.

Then it clicked shut.

The house fell into absolute, deafening silence.

The spilled milk pooled on the dark wood floor, dripping rhythmically onto the rug beneath the table. *Drip. Drip. Drip.*

I stood alone in the center of the dining room.

Not a single tear fell from my eyes. The tightness in my throat was gone, replaced by a clarity so sharp it felt like frost.

I turned my back on the mess, walked past the dining table, and headed up the stairs.

Entering the master bedroom, I walked directly to the walk-in closet. I pushed past Liam’s designer suits and my own rack of sensible, boring mom clothes. In the darkest, deepest corner of the bottom shelf sat a dusty, locked velvet jewelry case.

I keyed in the combination. The latch popped open with a quiet click.

Resting inside, beneath old velvet linings, was a sleek black smartphone.

The private phone I had powered down five years ago when I walked away from the design industry and abandoned my own name.

I pressed the power button.

The screen flickered, lighting up the dark closet with a cold, blinding glow.
